Is this a generational thing? Maybe because I grew up before smart phones, but its the most normal thing in the world for a friend or family to visit and not call first. I don't call my family members (the ones that live nearby) before I visit. If they're busy, no big deal I'll go away. I'm the one that wasted my time in that scenario not them.

I know some younger kids find it weird if you don't text before you call them. THAT is suuuuper weird to me. Like we're using the same device in our hand to text, why can't I just call? Anyway, if I know it bothers someone then obviously I'll try to be cool about it. That goes for home visits and phone calls.

I don't think so. I'm pretty young and I think it's normal to not call before visiting.
