Too me,I feel like it will make the show funnier, will you Feel offended?
Well, fair enoughI never watch anime dubs, so I wouln't care at all.
More like instantly!I switching to sub, Automatically
), adding a bunch of swearing in a cute slice-of-life anime for no particular reason wouldn't necessarily keep me invested. As GLaDOS mentioned before, the tonal shift from "wholesome" to "vulgar" would feel very awkward. Like, imagine watching "K-ON" and hearing the girls swear a ton during a scene where they're eating a cake.
I agree I mean, I understand why they rewrite some things due to cultural differences. What is funny in Japan might go over someone's head if they don't understand the culture or the references. Sometimes, it can actually be worse than rewriting it to fit the narrative or the story at that point in time. However, completely rewriting the entire story because it doesn't fit the culture's worldview is, in my opinion, as bad as censoring things.I prefer to watch things in their original language, so I get something like this wouldn’t affect me, but I’ve always thought it was lame when dubs completely re-write dialogue for no real reason. Always reeked of insecurity to me.
Yeah, I completely understand restructuring sentences and maybe swapping a word or 2 out to have it be actually legible in English since, as I’m sure we all know, Japanese to English is literally impossible to directly translate and be legible. Obviously there’s a big difference between that and writing something completely different to what was actually said lol.I agree I mean, I understand why they rewrite some things due to cultural differences. Take, for example, the complete rewrite of Ghost Stories. In Japan, it was pretty much a flop, but the rewrite is hilarious. That approach doesn't work for everything, though. For instance, in some older anime, they changed the settings, especially in the 90s. They often changed the setting from the Japanese region where the show was originally set to a generic American town, mind you very Japanese American towns.

” guy, but I do have to point out the whole story behind Ghost Stories English dub being the way it is has been proven to be a myth totally made up by the voice director at ADV. It was actually a fairly beloved show in Japan amongst the generation that grew up with it, from what I can gather. Its viewing figures in Japan at the time show this, and in fact there were some weeks where it would rival, or even overtake other extremely popular children’s anime like Pokemon for instance.
