How well do y'all think 4kids handled the Sonic X dub?

Honestly, coming from a Sonic the Hedgehog fan. I have to say the 4kids dub sadly isn't very good, the voice acting itself is very memorable i will admit, but the fact that the censorship and localization really hurt the quality of the dub, I mean they censored the deaths, tone down instances of violence. The suggestive stuff and alcohol i can understand why because Sonic franchise is supposed to aimed for all ages but the rest of the censorship i just do not agree, but the 2000s that era sure was kinda edgy for the Sonic. Overall, the dub is just butchered by 4kids, and its sadly a classic case of 4kids playing it safe with alot of anime shows that dubbed by censoring out content that isn't suitable for children. So anyways, how well did 4kids handled the Sonic X dub. I'm sorry to some who might like the 4kids dub of Sonic x, but i just have to give it a 4/10

I have a very similar stance. I loved the English voice cast, but the quality of the dub itself is terrible. In addition to the ridiculous censorship, the script is also pretty bad.

I'm nostalgic towards that dub as it was THE show that I'd wake up for every Saturday morning. But nowadays... Yeah, I'll stick with the original Japanese version.

I found the 4Kids Dub to be very cringe with bad jokes, poor writing, annoying 4Kids background music and unnecessary cuts. The original Japanese Dub is better despite Chris being in it.

I forgot about that scene in EP 2. It caught me off guard the first time I heard about it.

i really didn't stand sonic X at all, I played and have all the sonic games why do i need to see a retelling of the same thing, plus unneccesary humans (I really hate chris as a character like, a lot)?

i've ONLY watched in english dub so... sounds like MAYBE i need to watch it in japanese original now to get a better opinion lol.
(yes i'm aware some of the plot isn't from the games like cosmo in general)

i've also become aware quite a bit recently on how the GAMES badly handle translation/dubbing to english. the re-translation here of sonic battle is life-changing and literally felt like i was playing a whole different game.

Beyond the censorship found in the localisation script, it's functional and inoffensive.

I enjoyed it when I was younger, although having played SA1&2 afterwards I have never felt the desire to re-watch X, especially now that the Sonic films gave us a respectful, alternate interpretation of SA2.

The thing with Dubs people misunderstand is how the majority are "good" as long as you're unaware of the changes to the original dialogue. It's the censorship that fuels anti-dub sentiments.
Localisation is ALWAYS a synonym for Censorship.
I grew up with ADV, Animaze & Saban's dubs, to the point hearing re-occurring VA's such as Steve Bloom, Spike Spencor or Wendee Lee was a sign of quality.

I assume some feel similar about 4kids.

I never understood these sign edits. They felt completely unnecessary. Like, there's this one shot of a wooden sign that said something like "The House of Amy Rose". 4Kids removed the text but they still left that shot in, so now you're just looking at a blank sign for a couple seconds.

I had a theory about them doing it so other distributors could put their own text with the language on it instead...

But most didn't care enough to edit the text in every instances (like Pixar would do with their international releases).

1. Average 4Kids censorship
2. Mangled soundtrack (If i ever hear that sting they use anytime someone drops the slightets drama bomb i will make the Genocide Route IRL)
   The Spin Dash sound is grating
3. They remove plot relevant deaths, already bad, but some of them are removed without adding dialogue to acknowledge the change, meaning plot holes galore (yay)
4. Oh, while some voices are good, Amy's voice make wish the Mute button could appy to a single character

To make it worse, this is the version we got dubbed in Latam, we didn't even got the dignity of a good Gotta Go Fast version, here it sounds like if the dubbers got literally deflated

On the bright side, Eggman is as usual the best part

Although, I haven't watched Sonic X in a hot minute since I was like 9 years old on YouTube. I can tell you that overall the 4Kids dub has got to one of their worst dubs out there.
1. The fact that a good majority of it consisted of worst and heavily butchered versions of SA1 & SA2 stories did not help matters at all with this. (Note: Seriously whose bright idea was it to cut out Maria's death in the episode about the the Ark and just change it to "She was taken away." Like the optics is not mathing here espically considering that Adventure 2 Battle was out for a few years out that point. So people would notice that major issue. Also a major plot hole that feels like bad fanfiction.)
2. I love the English theme song because I was exposed that too many times as a kid watching it on YouTube. The 4Kids ost is terrible, the theme for Rouge still haunts my dreams.
3. The voice actors are really good, I mean there is a reason why Mike Pollock is still Eggman to day after this show. (Expect for Amy and Chris)
4. Chris Thorndyke takes a lot more space in the show alot epsically in the SA2 arcs of the show. He basically took Amy's spot and she gets the NIC treatment. ( NIC - Not Important Character)
Overall not a great time with this one at all. I semi-love/tolorated as a kid but can not stand it as an adult.

It's wild that Sonic X is basically an Isekai with a Digimon/Pokémon kind of deal with a human buddy having a non human best friend having adventures.

I am not a big fan of the idea of humans in Sonic's world yet this made much more sense than that "two worlds" thing from Iizuka for the mainline games...


But the OVAs having the Dark Land being the remnants of human civilisation on the planet will always be my best interpretation of Sonic's world.

I'm gonna be on the other side here. I actually liked Liza Ortiz's performance as Amy; I'd go as far to say that she's the best Amy VA.
