Yup .
Especially horror games need those contrasts to convince people that you play a grounded world with an outside phenomena or something that outter worldly .

Going full on extrem gore can make either the setting laughable or make the game rather bland (Doom 2016 and eternal comes to my mind) .

Its an fine art to make violence and gore effective instead making it a cheap special effect that being overused and can even hinder the clarity of a game . There were some Ps2 or xbox games which enemies can guard attacks from the player but the blood splatter is still there and you dont make damage while you flail your weapon constantly and they dont drop dead .
I completelt agree with you here, it's part of why I never take the Bloody Mess perk in Fallout games.
The other reason is that I like to see more animations than the person simply exploding to pieces, even when I shoot them with a dinky pistol.

The damage bonus is nice, but not worth not getting to see all the other death animations available.

Regarding D2016 and DEternal, the glory kills are honestly something that have been keeping me from even trying the game. I think it's a tacked on mechanic that takes too long and don't really mesh with the pace the game requires. If there's a way to turn these off I'd like to know.

As much as suits the tone. There's really no upper limit. Some games, like the newest Doom, would benefit from being more violent.

I completly agree .
That reminds about the coup de grace system in the LotR games on the ps2 , xbox and Gamecube . An actual cool idea but only cool if the character peforms it fast enough and/or is build into a combo too but that wasnt perfect overall because there are no clear sign if the enemy is actually dead or not .

In the latest Doom games those glory-kills were way too necessary and even with the speed upgrades for it , doesnt fixed the problem with its gameplay flow .

Another point was that the guts and gore stuff was later so bland and mixed with the glory-kills tedium , it just drags on and the fun staggers hard . That i beat eternal was more work than fun , even with the weapon-combos . Ive never touched it since i first-time beat it .

The idea to mix shooters with meele combat never really worked out and can become a chaotic mess . Thats why meele combat in shooters are rather very simplistic in its use or overall useless .

It's EXACTLY how I feel. If I want 1st person melee, I'll play Mordhau.

I think it worked pretty well in Escape from Butcher Bay. The problem is more that most first-person games don't develop a real combat system, rather than the idea being bad on its face.

Thank you ! You remind of that game i need to play too . I heard that it is great and i missed it out .

Another game which made melee fighting great in the first-person perspective was Breakdown . It had sadly its own plethora of issues but still a great idea with some fine-tuning needed . But sadly those games are more the exception (including Mordhau) than the norm . Maybe i missed out some more good games of that concept .

If you're looking for a first-person game with a robust combat system then maybe Mount&Blade would be up your alley? I can't speak for the sequel that seems to be hot right now but the original and all of its mods should be enough to satisfy you for hours.

Yeah M&B is the yarding stick when 8t comes to melee.

I don't mind heads exploding in DOOM and Fallout, or blood splattering everywhere in Devil May Cry. It's whatever, as long as the game is fun.
