The Amiga 500 AutoBoot Edition is a Raspberry Pi 4 based system running Raspberry Pi OS Lite and Amiberry, designed to recreate the simplicity of the original Amiga experience.

There is no desktop, no launcher and no configuration menu. The system boots directly into Amiberry and automatically starts the correct game or application when a 3.5” floppy disk is inserted.

Each disk contains a small GAME.ID file which is linked to a dedicated Amiberry configuration. This allows games, Workbench environments and applications to launch automatically without any user interaction.

The hardware is housed inside the case of a non-working Commodore 1541 floppy disk drive, giving the project an authentic Commodore look while preserving a piece of classic computer history.

Instead of being discarded, the original drive enclosure was repurposed to contain the complete Amiga 500 AutoBoot system, including the Raspberry Pi 4, storage, power distribution and all required interfaces.

The result combines vintage aesthetics with modern hardware while maintaining the spirit of the original Commodore era. From the outside it still looks like a classic piece of 1980s hardware, but inside it has been transformed into a dedicated Amiga gaming and productivity system.

The project is not limited to games. It can also boot directly into the classic Amiga Workbench 1.3 environment, bringing back the authentic look and feel of a real Amiga computer.

What began as a defective Commodore 1541 has been given a second life as a fully functional Amiga 500 replacement.
