How much of an old game's flaws are you willing to excuse?

Maybe less good audio quality than I'd want I can excuse.
But in general I don't make exceptions for games based on age.

I do like Simon's Quest. I think it's one of the better Castlevania games. Just fixing the laggy day to night transition and a few other QoL fixes have made it a significantly better game. Honestly, just fixing the long load transition from day to night made it a thousand times more enjoyable.

If that was the only thing they fixed, I still would have been happy. And Tiger handhelds aren't video games...

They are cruel and unusual punishments that should have only ever been employed by the CIA.

Arch jump you can't redirect, it get a pass especially if the game feels like if it was made with those in mind

Random Encounters, as long as they don't go overdrive and i get a reliable repel

Shumps where you lost your power but you still respawn in the spot

The fact that people have made it a seamless transition from Day to Night and vice versa tells me that either they

a) Were just way too inexperienced at programming to make it happen, or
b) It would have taken more time and effort than they were willing to put in to it.

I've seen a lot of this kind kf thing; bugs in games that get fixed 20+ years later, and it makes me wonder if it's not just because technology and hacking capabilities have come such a long way since then. I like to think that's the real reason why; after all, these companies are old, not stupid; they realize what they're doing and want to make it as good as they can so people will buy and want to play their shit.
 
I give older games a lot more leeway on technical issues than modern games. When a AAAA release has the player falling through the floor, or crashing the system, I find that much less acceptable than some technological limitations from older hardware.
