How much of a chance do you give games these days?

I feel that availability has become a core issue for me.

When I was a kid, getting new games to play was a BIG DEAL because it required for either the planets to align so my dad would actually buy them or for my sister and I to both bring home enough good grades to justify rentals, so we played everything we managed to get our hands on as much as possible, even if the games kinda sucked or we didn't understand them (and this was a very real thing at a time when most Genesis releases were exclusively in English).

Nowadays, though, I feel like the gaming environment itself has rewired my brain to adopt a "reviewer" mindset: play something for an hour or two, see if it wows me --and most games aren't front loaded like that, so the vast majority don't--, move on to the next thing. Rinse & repeat.

I don't like this, but games have never been this easy to get and flashy recommendations just keep on coming, so committing seems almost impossible unless I come across something I REALLY want to play through.

What about you? Do you play things to the end or organize your collection on bite-sized chunks you may or may not go back to?

I think there's just too many games to play nowadays, I would never have time to finish every single one. I play a game for an hour, then I either drop it or keep on playing. When I wanna drop it earlier I know I don't really like the game for one reason or another.

Lately I've tried Balatro, and while the game is short and great fun I think it's better as a "watch someone on YouTube play it" kinda game than actually playing it.
 
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always picked games based on the cover art, no matter the genre or anything else. And honestly, I still kind of do that today, although sometimes I go more by the game’s name than the cover itself.

For example, the other day I was looking for something random to play on the PSP and came across Way of the Samurai. The cover was simple, nothing eye-catching, and I didn’t even remember ever hearing about it (even though it’s relatively well-known). In the end, it turned out to be a really fun game to play.

Also, I always finish the games I start, whether I liked them or not, with the exception of Donald Land on the NES. I absolutely hate that game.
 
I mostly play RPGs, and I think after about 4 hours or so if there isn't a character that really stands out to me, the setup doesn't really get me excited or the plot feels weak, I'll move on to the next one. I used to push through, wanting to see how things end, but after being taken on enough mediocre-to-bad, 30 hour rides just for the conclusion to be more of the same to better feel out what is going to be for me or not.
 
I try to give games a fair chance to see if I like them or not, even if it's just playing them for a few minutes.
 
I've bought expensive games and not played them and I've played cheap or free games every day until I beat them. So, I can't answer you either
 
With just looking at screenshots is enough for me to tell if its worth giving it a chance (and this is a reason I add a lot of screenshots in my reviews). If its a VN, I just look at the tags in VNDB.

The more marketing a game gets, the less inclined I am to play it.

But, if I stumble upon it (since I like to look for lesser known games), its quite likely I will play it (if it passes the interesting screenshots phase).
 
While i am a total Nostalgia slave regarding gaming, i still fish for either giveaway games or whatever my YT Shorts suggest me to play, that said if it fails to call my attention for the first sections or so i delete it
 
I have my eye more on niche projects, especially now that I have a Steam Deck and I discovered that Itch.io is a thing. The big games coming out these days by the established companies don't really do much for me.

I think I've been like that most of my life. I am finicky about how a game controls, feels. If it doesn't sit well with me, I quit it. That happens so often, I just can never justify paying the price of a AAA game. The dollar being 5 times as valuable as my currency doesn't help with that.
 
I checked out modern games ever since the end of the ps3 era, with some exceptions like the doom games or Bayonetta 3 or the odd game that really clicks with me. I already have lots of games on my pi or my old consoles which I know I'm gonna like; so it's gotta Grab me

If a game has the Stop to Listen to Yapping and controls/looks like the last of us I'm already getting my coat;

If its got a unique atmosphere, controls that arent recycled from a sony exclusive.. Or if it's got a risquè unique story that surprises me and wouldnt be approved by today's capcom or other big publishers; that guarantees Im trying it.

And, if it's an action game, if it's actually trying to kill me or challenging me instead passively moving me forward; then I'm giving it a chance. Let's say a couple hours, and if I wanna keep going..

Friggin red dead redemption 2 takes two hours to get started, I couldnt believe it

Sure I expect it from an rpg, but in those two hours you're usually still doing cool stuff or taking in the world or doing boss fights and learning the battle systems etc...
In rdrd2 it was basically like watching a tv show while slooowly being told simple stuff like youve never held a controller before
 
Depends on the game. I tend to give it a very good shot when I’m the one choosing the game. I have other people in my life who recommend me stuff, and they’re usually right, but I swear that the endorsement from a friend makes me less likely to want to play it lol

I’ve gotten more patient with games as I’ve gotten older. It’s experience. Plus, owning the games makes me more likely to give them a longer shot. Having them on emulator, they really have to give me something within a minute or two, since it’s too addicting to just start swapping around games like a madman.
 
I can honestly say there is only one single game I've played in recent memory that I've had to "give a chance" to, and that was Brave Fencer Musashi for the PS1.

I had heard all these great things about it, so when I loaded it up and the intro presented me with a super linear path and basic combat system I was kinda bummed. but I kept playing, and within less than 5 minutes all of my fears were assuaged. If you haven't played it, try it for yourself. It owns.

What's your beef with Donald Land then? I sorta want to hear what makes this one game so bad :loldog

I’ve played Donald Land at three different points in my life, and every single time it reminded me why I should’ve stayed away.

The first time, I was 7. I played it on one of those PS2 DVDs packed with random emulator ROMs. I could barely get past the second level and dropped it because it just wasn’t as fun as I imagined

The second time, I was around 12. I did a little better, but I didn’t stick with it. I was mostly revisiting the game out of curiosity rather than actually wanting to play it.

The last time, I was 18. I remember watching some NES longplays on YouTube and stumbling across Donald Land again, a 30-minute video where the guy didn’t take a single hit. That was enough to reignite my desire to try it again.

And after three long weeks… I remembered exactly why I had abandoned it.

The game is completely broken in its core mechanic of using bombs as platforms. The hitboxes are awful, inconsistent, and honestly disgusting. At some point I wasn’t even angry anymore, i was just exhausted. I always finish what I start, but Donald Land broke my spirit. Never again.
 
I got PC xbox gamepass and I cant tell you how many new AAA games I try and delete right away. Games these days are way too long and complex. You gotta fight, build a house, craft stuff, deal with social / login bonus features, go through boring tutorials. All while the game's gameplay seems unpolished. Also for games more than 50 GB, eventually you gotta delete those to make more space.

I remember on NES I would play games I hated. Maybe as a kid I had more time but I also think its the games got to the main point right away.
 
Good question OP. My answer is a big flat "Depends." There are some games that dont click with me at all, some that seem promising in the beginning and fall off later, there are games that I end up liking way more than expected. Then there are games I didnt enjoy initially but they grew on me w/ replays. There are games that take me years to beat. And many other such scenarios.....so it is hard for me to say definitively how much chance I give a game these days.

Whoops, misinterpreted thread... again

It depends in many factors, if i like the game in the first levels, if i like the artistic design and if i view myself playing it in my free time to add it to my already huge backlog
