Nowadays, it's pretty common for websites to ask even if you wipe your ass with your left hand or your right hand. Years ago it was common knowledge to not say your name or show your face on the internet but now it seems like nobody cares about that anymore and they just show everything about themselves, is chasing fame really worth putting yourself out there in the internet like that?

How about you? Would you show your face around here or say your full name? I've seen some cases where people would use what you could assume was their real name for forum accounts. Some people around have said from which country they come from, I myself have said that i live in south america, but never stated which country.

Interesting topic idea, and one that’s surprisingly tricky to answer because of a tiny paradox. Because basically, maybe you DONT wanna reveal how much you’re willing to reveal, even if you won’t reveal it. You don’t wanna reveal the limit of what you’ll reveal, idk how to explain it ::lol

Although I’m obviously over complicating the question on purpose for fun. I don’t really mind giving a non-vague clear answer. I think it largely depends. Revealing my country has surprisingly always lead to more positive results than it would’ve otherwise, like people started to gravitate towards me more and be more curious about me and my culture and why I’m so fascinated with English and Spanish and how I got exposed to them. Which works to my father cuz I’m not actually as un-shy as I might come off, so someone shy like me having people approach me and wanna have an honest conversation with me is hella helpful in helping me converse back.

I am an old fart so I started playing with the internet when there wasn't much more than pron, and email. I started an online persona that I still use, specifically to avoid putting personal info out there. I am not paranoid or anything I just don't like the idea of giving it up for free so that someone else can make money off it.
Funny thing, that persona I made all those years ago gets credit card offers... man if i had more of a villainous streak in me.

None unless I'm VERY handsomely compensated. I have two reasons:

1. Personal data looks like a very lucrative business. We see all sorts of entities getting caught selling your data for a lot of money fairly regularly. Want my data? I want my cut of the racket. A couple mil upfront plus a percentage of any future transaction that involves my data should suffice.

2. Governments love collecting all sorts of data on you. They don't really need to know what I do on the Internet as far as I'm concerned for one but the bigger problem is that their database security tends to be lousy. Who knows how many people got exposed to scams because their data was stolen from a gov database that didn't need to exist in the first place.

Fair enough. I wonder how much data the government has about me? They probably know which curse word i use the most haha. I came to the conclusion that three letter agencies and google already has all of my personal so might as well stop repeating it and maybe say a lie or two to throw them off.
None that can be traced to my real life identity.
This too, i've said some things but nothing that can be traced (i think)

Not even my real name lmao, but country? (As you can see)
But nice try FBI

Besides what's on my profile nothing. maybe if someone here became a good friend I'd let some more out but nah. Identity Theft is a real issue.

I think people tend to be more honest when they can hide behind a picture, and I am fine with that. On flip side, I also think some people want a personal connection with people that like the same stuff they do. I have a few friends that have made life long friends via online. Whatever floats your boat.

When I was growing up in the mid-2000s, there was this huge moral panic sweeping my community about kids sharing information about themselves online. My grade school actually had an all-student assembly one day where my principal told us, in no uncertain terms, never to share our names (especially our last names) or ages on the internet. This was way before social media — the way we were all communicating was through MSN’s instant messenger, and the idea of putting a photo of yourself online wasn’t realistic — but I remember being pretty spooked by it.

The scare wasn’t limited to our schools, either — I remember my mom, who usually didn’t mind what TV shows I watched, specifically forbidding me from watching To Catch a Predator, because it showed adults creeping on supposed “kids” through Internet chat rooms. Many of my friends confirmed to me that they had also been been banned from watching shows about that kind of thing, so obviously the parents were talking about it behind our backs.

Everyone had chilled out by the time Facebook came around in 2009/2010 — parents were on it too, so I guess they felt it was trustworthy — but ever since then I’ve been apprehensive about revealing any more information about myself online than I need to. Outside of LinkedIn, which I begrudgingly use for professional networking, I’ve never joined a social media channel, and would sure as fuck never add my photo and real name to one.

Following the recent U.S. election, a ton of people who I work with online have been posting very angry, very explicit material on their LinkedIn pages, with their full name and a photo of their face attached to it. I cannot imagine a time in my life where I’ll ever feel comfortable doing that, and frankly, I think it’s for the best.

I remember when our computer science teacher would drill into us not to share personal information on the Internet.

Personally, none.
With photo and voice sample people can easily use ai to make fakes.
Why would I give those people more chance to collect my info?

My policy has been, is and will continue to be "as little as possible" regarding information to websites.

Regarding websites, only email if necessary, maybe first name, and country. Age is fine too. Maybe my penis size.

With someone I'm really confortable with, maybe a picture.

I want to uplaod more than 15 minutes videos on youtube but no way I'm giving my phone number to Youtube. 👀

Eh I've always been an open book and willing to share anything about me.BUT I'm not willing to share my pics on the internet tho

A funny thing to think about, people used to write letters to hobbyist magazines and include their addresses, hoping to coordinate with other people with shared interests. I think that's how guys like Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard linked up originally.

preferably none, but that's not realistic anymore these days. so I'm demoralized.

Yeah that was great.

I would love to get @Gorse adress so we can talk about how Rocky 2 is absolute trash.

I was told about the dangers of internet since I was a teen and honestly I don't get why someone exposing themselves online think they'd be safe...

I don't even like talking or telling my age simply because these are things that shouldn't be relevant about myself and what I'm writing.

Adult are responsible of themselves but what is put online stays sadly online (for the better and worse).

Responsible parents should also care about their kid because there could be terrible consequences if they're left all alone with strangers online.
