I've never played this game so I decided to check it out yesterday. The controls were very finicky, controlling Sonic was a nightmare. I tried to somehow, understand how the game wanted to be played but by the end of the race I just had one thought:

What the fuck were they thinking?

Is there a trick to it? I noticed the bumpers sort of tilt Sonic to the left or right. Maybe slowly tap forward instead of holding it could prove useful.

Any pro Sonic R players that could enlighten me, much appreciated.

Sonic games are the biggest challenge for patience because somehow I don't really know what the makers were thinking when they made such bad controls maybe they hate the players.

Is there a trick to it?
Yes. You accelerate by holding up and turn by pressing the direction on the dpad + the associated trigger, just like in Rock and Roll Racing. By pressing both at the same time you can make pretty much any turn in the game. In fact, you will oversteer if you don't let go.

Sonic R is a mediocre racing game but it's not as bad as people say it is. They're just noobs.

Had the same moment years and years ago.
All the characters control lie hover crafts.
Think of them AS hover crafts and you can have a good time with the game.

OK so if you're looking for actual tips: Sonic isn't a hedgehog in this game, he's a car.

Everyone's a car, the D-pad (preferably analogue stick) should be steered like it's a car's steering wheel and you press some button (don't remember which) to press on gas.

The controls make a lot more sense when you use a racer mindset.

Pretty sure you were supposed to steer with the shoulder buttons and try to fine tune the steering with the directional pad.

I could be wrong though. I don't try to think about it. The game sucks and I refuse to play it, despite having a fully loaded library on a Satiator.

As a kid I always loved sonic R. When I grew up I realized that I only played it because of it gorgeous music (and to this day, the jacques/davis duo is one of my biggest influences when talking of vg composers).
Anyhow, as a kid actually I used to play it on the gems collections, sometimes on ps2, sometimes on gc, but mostly on GC, and I don't remember it controlling SO BADLY as the time I tried to play de saturn version with the 3d pad as an adult. It was just one time so my theory is that the gems version has refined controls, maybe someone can confirm this theory?
I still don't have an ODE for using on my saturn, but this summer I'll buy one, and honestly, even tho the game freaking sucks, I still want to beat it once more, but on it's original system::winkfelix as long the music is on,it's okay for me

My first introduction to the Sonic games. At first I had fun exploring the glorious, multi routed environments in like Time Trial mode. Then when that wore off, I got to the nitty gritty and learned to play it proper, collecting medals, emeralds, and unlocking characters/maps. It's a glorious, replayable racing game with an attempt at the classic Sonic map design but in 3D, if you know what you're doing in it. The only real fault in this game is too little content level wise. But given the amount of times it's replayed, I suppose it makes sense.

The PC version was actually my favorite game during the summer of 2003, so I think I can answer this question...

Due to the finicky (kinda oily) controls, confusing track design and extremely sharp turns you are expected to make, you are better off forfeiting Sonic entirely and picking a slower, bigger character instead (yes, that's a valid strategy in this game: deliberately ignoring the main character and choosing a slower racer to win a race), anything else is playing with fire.

To beat this game, you need to keep the dream alive, while living in the city
