How do YOU play PS1 games on Duckstation? (or old games in general, both 2D and 3D)

Untitled.png

6x internal resolution, downsampled to 2x. This brings much more detail to 3d objects while leaving them slightly pixelated.

I do this because I hate when the 3d objects are super high resolution against the low resolution 2d backgrounds. It looks disjointed and weird. Downsampling feels like a good compromise that smooths this issue out.

I still use ePSXe to this day, but I will share the settings I use anyway.

Been using these same exact settings for years,, no feeling like finding the perfect setting especially for vids.

I would've loved if these were shown to me a decade ago but I'll probably never run ePSXe ever again...

I see no reason to just not go with anything that just looks decent FOR YOU when using an emulator. I really don't play games just to please gain respect from some random nerds on the internet by strictly following whatever meta they set for it.
That said, you really do need a crt or a balling modern setup to get that genuine look AND feel imho if that's what you're going for. I feel like neither of those really matters though unless you have some frame of reference or a goal to play as legit as possible. I enjoyed plenty of games during the dark times of shitty emulators on a crappy office 5:4 lcd monitors or laptops in the 00's when that was all I had.

1. Do I play in native resolution?
No, unless its a 2D game because higher res is usually pointless and can even break stuff
2. Do I want to play with any CRT filters at all?
Yes, crt-consumer, and grade for NTSC-J colorspace correction on japanese developed games
3. Do I want to turn on the PXGP geometry fixing thing?
I want to, but sometimes it breaks some stuff and I turn it off.
I have both toggle software-renderer and toggle PGXP bound to hotkeys on my controller.

I myself don't know how I want to enjoy the game
(...)
Please shed some light on me so that I don't have to keep swapping between my settings every time. I just wanna play and enjoy the game without having to tinker every single setting relevant.

At some point you gotta just go "good enough" and realize the graphics settings will barely change your enjoyment of the game, a good/fun game will be good/fun regardless of the graphics settings. And a bad game will still be bad at 4k.

But I am like that also, I will spend way to much time configuring settings and debating which settings I should use.
Easiest thing i found was to configure the ''toggle software-renderer" shortcut/hotkey.
that way you can, with one button press, switch between {native-res and no PGXP} and {HD settings of your choice} while in-game, without pausing the game and spending time in the menus again.

Honestly, I play around with the CRT shaders.

Here's the shaders I have enabled.
Screenshot (1101).png

Upscaled to 1080p
CRT New Pixie filter
PXGP On
4:3 aspect ratio
That's all I need.

Vulkan renderer
Dithering unscaled (shader blending)
Bilinear sharp upscaling
Native resolution.
Everything else default settings.

Sometimes I drop the bilinear upscaling and activate the CRT-royale shader. That depends on the mood.
