for few month i haven't touch my psp emulator for while and just looking at it, i only came here to change my wallpaper for time to time. i don't know why i keep stray away not to play it and i have sudden disinterest of long cut scene also feel like gaming becomes a task. How can't i play my favorite Black Rock Shooter and Final Fantasy port. Am i not understanding appeal my likeness or a burn out? although i'd often play competitive game and there's no problem around tho.

I’ve got a dozen of jrpg backlog because I rarely play games nowadays. I’m just too busy with other things (work , parenting etc.) I only play some games just to blow off some steam unlike before that I would play for at least 2 hours.

Maybe you have depression. Is life good otherwise?

I have other hobbies, i just switch around to whichever i feel like doing at the moment.

I get the same way about music sometimes. I can go weeks without listening to anything. The same is true for videogames. I find doing something passive helps, like watching a video, or catching up on sleep.

Being apathetic means losing interest pretty quick with everything. So there are days when I play for some hours, and others where I don't even think about it because I don't want to. Playing is just another way to keep stable my mental health, or sanity. The more I get bored, the worse I feel.

In my mid 20s to late 20s I did enter states of depression where I pretty much didn't touch a game for months and spent my free time just watching youtube videos and existing. By my 30s I got out of those states as I strive to become more how I was like a teenager with my gaming. I started keeping track of what games I have beaten with my goal every year is atleast 12. I also quit drinking about 3 years ago, picked up building PCs and gained an interest in the FOSS/Linux world. I also go on a drive close to once a week down to the area I grew up in and get some good food. Though sad to say at the age of 36, I don't think I will ever be able to do the one thing I could do as a teen, a gaming all nighter and then staying up the whole next day and not sleeping until the next night. I will now pass out with a controller in hand no problem :P

I often struggle with this myself.

I think taking a break is the solution. Do other things insted of gaming and the desire to play will come naturaly later.

Be aware of "outside factors" too. Sometimes our lives are so busy and stressfull that even doing something plesureable that requires some type of effort seems like a chore

congrats, wish I could do that. My body pretty much runs on ethanol currently >_<

Oh yea! that reminds me, I meant to post in the linux thread about how much I love Garuda now! I think I am ditching manjaro. Anyway, see you there @SpikeSlania

I'll play games for a few weeks, then burn myself out. Then go back again. It's a off and on effect. I'm super into them when something new comes out or I want to play something I haven't played in a while.

As others have said, it's a hobby like any other, so burnout is normal. Try something else, preferably very different like crafts (not Star Crafts) or drawing. Also part of game burnout comes from facing games like a chore.
"I have to finish X game!", "I have to platinum Y game!" are very bad states of mind.

Personally im focusing on gunpla or model building right now because modern video games mostly stink no my bad SUCK and im not talking about all modern games im talking about AAA games. Right now im not playing any games at the moment to many things going on but when I wanted to play a video game I will start playing star fox 64 on my steam deck via starship recomp (yes its a thing look it up).

Let me tell you stories about depression suck balls but you get those emotions where you dont feel like playing any video games and wanted to do better things in life like sports to freaking cooking food. Also congrats on quiting smoking and yes getting older is when we realise we cannot game allnight anymore.

I just play when I'm bored or in the case I've found a video game that I'm particularly addicted to (currently it's Custom Robo Arena for me). There is no motivation, and I can get just as bored only playing video games, causing me to be on my phone more, to walk outside, or watch anime. And maybe at one point when I can actually commit to reading lines on paper, reading books/manga can be added.

It's weird to hear that depression would make you not want to play video games. From my experience, video games are what I would seek out when I was feeling depressed or stressed. You are probably experiencing burnout. It is better to have other hobbies and keep the video games to an occasional thing.

My best gaming sessions are always when i start already in a good mood and REALLY want to play X or Y game. What often helps me too is trying to not play anything for a while until i feel like I actually want to play something specific.
I would also say to either look at what else has been happening in your life, maybe you're gaming on the automatic for lack of other hobbies and thus transforming it into routine more than pleasure, or to not think about something, i don't know, you know you.
