How do you get banned on this site?

I posted a thread the other day and some guy called Action_Hank gave me some really valuable info. I tried to @ them in a follow up message but couldn't find them. Turns out they were banned. I'm just super curious if anyone knows anything either to do with that specifically or about getting banned in general?

Honestly I'm probably gonna just delete this thread in a couple of days because really I'm just super curious and being nosy - they seemed like a chill guy

Hank was a cool guy, yeah.

But he decided to escalate something when a mod called both him and another party out for partaking on rule-breaking shenanigans. And kept escalating until banning was the only path left.

I liked the guy, so it was very disappointing to see.

I dunno, I haven't got banned yet and I've got over 1000 posts, so if they haven't shut me up yet I'd say it's somewhat difficult unless you try to by breaking the rules on purpose.

One more thing; the rules are pretty straightforward and agreeable, the main purpose is to not be an asshole, so anyone who'd want to break that rule probably doesn't belong in the community anyway. Just pointing that out.

Some people like to insist to being rude and go on a spiral when things aren't going their way, often resorting to the freedom of speech excuse. Like they never heard of the concept of maintaining good standards in a community before.

i don't think the threads dissapear. it seems like when someone is banned, their user name seems to change to whatever number they were when they signed up. example: if you signed up and were the 42,069 member, and then you are banned; your posts and threads will show that number instead of your username. your username only remains if someone quotes you in a post.
sorry, i think i miss read your post. you were writing on a thread that got merged like ciro64 said, so it got moved. it still exists.

yeah, i've been noticing some slight variations on that. some people keep their names even if banned or deleted, others change over to a set of numbers, a few change into the name guest###. haven't thought much about it.

if you ever need to; you can use the search forums function to locate threads and posts. you can put in keywords like the thread name or part of it, who posted it and even a date if you know that. that should be helpful if you ever need to find another thread again.

Well, a conversation doesn't necessarily become less worthwhile because someone has left the site or changed accounts for some technical issue or another. If it's a relatively small/new thread, it's not a big deal to get rid of, but that Sony News thread for example has probably a hundred separate people contributing to it; I'd rather not delete everyone's comments if I can avoid it.

Short version, it's just something to handle on a case-by-case basis.

Thanks for the info! Mind if I ask what the rule-breaking shenanigans were? Idky I'm so interested - I guess I just expected banned accounts to be the remnants of completely anti-social reprobates so it's odd that my only interaction with them was them being very helpful

It was a pretty minor thing as far as bannings go... just a couple of insults being exchanged with another guy. That SHOULD have been the end of it.

That's such a bummer. I love it when people get super heated in their debates - if you've got a point, I respect wanting to fight for it. It's a hard line to walk, but resorting to insults and bullying is cringe

I hope this was just a one-off "things went too far" affair and that he makes a comeback someday
