SNES How do we feel about the U.S. SNES design?

Purple was a weird choice.

I think it would've been fine if they have kept the 4 colours.

The European model is the same as the Japanese one so I have 0 nostalgia for that one.

I was one of the lucky kids who happened to have both a Super Nintendo and a Sega Genesis at the same time, so I'm not really super nostalgic for one or the other, I liked both.
But design-wise, honestly, I'm not even nostalgic for the Super Nintendo.
Guess I just liked the pain of choosing which console to neglect more.

I'm maybe biased but the Mega Drive being black gave it a classy look that didn't scream "children toy".

Yeah, even the U.S. version of the MD, the Genesis looked more like a proper electronic device than a child's toy, especially when you compare it to the Super Nintendo.
I mean, the Genesis had that sleek, serious vibe, like it was ready to take on the world.
While the Super Nintendo looked more like a colorful toy from a cereal box.

imo the western design is just that "nofun.jpg" meme of olde

I like the colorful buttons that everyone else got more tbh View attachment 72074

I had a third party controller with the Japan/Euro colors and had no idea at the time that they were based on the original design.

I loved this and the Genesis version. I used them more than the originals and the Genesis Ascii is my favorite controller of all time.

When I saw what other regions got in terms of console design I found it plain. I liked the power and reset buttons on the US SNES. SNES US? USS NES! :loldog

I had this controller, it was a beast for Primal Rage, Killer Instinct, Super Street Fighter II

I'm from the UK, but personally I've always preferred the look of the US SNES. That boxy look and those purple colours, just look so endearing to me. The bubbly colourful design of the JP SFC never really appealed to me.

Then again, my favourite colour is purple, so I'm definitely biased.

US design is not ugly or something like that, but I always go for Japanese version.

Not only for SNES but all game consoles. It's incredible, japanese version is more beautiful than US the most part of time.

I actually never knew this was a contentious topic until just today! For the record, the U.S. design was handled by the same designer behind the later N64, and it’s clear he had a knack for bizarre hardware designs that were still functional.

While I think the controller on the U.S. console is worse, the main system itself is my favorite among all of Nintendo’s 16 bit models. The JP SFC doesn’t do it for me, being too boring. And the Jr. redesign is even MORE boring, and totally sucks.

But that’s just me. What’s all you guys’ opinion?
(Please keep it civil. It’s a game system from 30 years ago, so it’s really not worth all that.)
I could go back and forth honestly , Like I think the system looks better in Japan the Super Famicom but I like the feeling of the American Cartridges more in my hands , But some of the art on the Japanese games is better💙 I'm just speaking from my experience I play my Super Nintendo/Super Famicom game carts on a Clone Console not original hardware mostly to save space because I have alottt of Nintendo Comsoles Gray Nintendo 64 , Indigo GameCube, White Wii and Black Wii U and more ( I love the way the other consoles are designed Love the N64 Design )

I always thought the US SNES design was just a follow up to the NES 2. A top loader design was much better for the cartridges instead of the old tape player NES. I just thought the more chunky design was gear towards how alot of the 90s designs focus more on BIG and LOUD. Those purple buttons and clunking buttons are that. Compared to the SNES2 which was more or less a smaller version of the ones from Europe and japan.

I love the purple buttons, but then I feel like it was scrubbed of all its personality, specially coming off the heels of the whimsical-looking NES.

I have a ton of nostalgia for the classic NA SNES design, but I think I like the sleek and colorful Super Famicom more overall.

I am impartial about the look of the SNES and it's controllers. I never owned one when it was new and most of my memories of it during that period were of playing it over at friends houses so I don't have any nostalgia for it. We had a Genesis model 2 at home at the time. I will always love the look of the Super Famicom over the NA model, so much so that the first piece of retro hardware I ever owned since the 80's and 90's was a Super Famicom controller. More than the looks I detest the feel of the NA SNES controllers. The mixed concave and convex buttons feel wrong to me. The SFC buttons feel amazing in comparison, not to mention they look better. Though I probably prefer it because the controller I used for all of my emulation for many years was an iBuffalo, a controller based on the SFC. It's for that reason that my NA SNES controllers remain unused collecting dust and I'll probably sell them at some point.

Please god someone retrobrite this thing I'm begging you.

Also, I enjoy the EU snes design. We got the colorful buttons on our controllers and I prefer the EU switches and buttons to the squarer/harsher switches on the US model.
