Comics How do i get into comics? Genuine question

Any comic fans want to recommend me good comics to start reading. I mainly interested in Marvel stuff but DC and others are good suggestions too. Is there a site or other resource you use to read comics online ??
What kinds of comics have you read in the past that you liked? Outside of comics, is there anything else you enjoy (like video games, or anime, for example)?

DC Comics:
try Justice, a real mastepiece drawn by the legendary artist Alex Ross. It shows how even superheroes can be vulnerable when villains try to take over the world. That they are humans like any other person. At least is how how is it.
Then I recommend to try any Rebirth series starting with the homonymous one shot.

Marvel:
try the Ultimate universe (the original one, mostly Spider-Man. X-Men and Fantastic 4.

Buy them or download them on Getcomics or readcomicsonline.

Try something different;
like some European comics. Blacksad, Corto Maltese, Martin Mystere, Nathan Never are good choices to start,
maybe some indie stuff can spark your interest, that's a whole different world,
ongoing Transformers comics are pretty hype if you're into giant robots,
or read older stories that interest you. You can also re-read stuff you like to get yourself into reading rhythm

The Sandman

Independent comic but usagi Yojimbo is my personal favorite American comic. It’s a long running samurai epic with no low point

Seconding the other dude, Sandman and Lucifer are both wild rides. And I guess you could try Bone and Usagi Yojimbo, both of those were my childhood, because I was always looking for them in the library as a kid.

Considering you're interested in Marvel:
I'd recommend the Deadpool comics, all the way until Danial Way's run. (Also don't forget to read Agent X at the appropriate point, otherwise you'll get lost at what's going on in the comic.)
I'd also highly recommend the original Marvel Zombies.
And if you want something hilarious, I'd also recommend Mini Marvels.
Anything post 2010 for Marvel is very hit and miss. If you want good comics past that decade, you'll have to search outside of Marvel I'm afraid.

As for general recommendations outside of Marvel, I'd recommend Hack/Slash, Scud the Disposable Assassin (that's a brilliant one), Bone, and the IDW Ghostbusters series.

Overall though, it depends on what you're interested in. I merely listed the ones I enjoyed enough to actually re-read.

EDIT: As for a resource to read online, I'd recommend GetComics.
(I hope that's ok to link to...)

i remember having some batman comics (i don't remember exactly which ones) and some comic from some Chileans authors but is was not superhero oriented (Condorito and Barrabases)
And well Manga of course
I like anime and videogames, not that into movies but i wanted to see the MCU for a bit

Legit thank u too all the recommendations :3 I knew it was the right choice to ask here <3

Batman Year One and the Long Halloween are cool. The general idea is to read short, self contained stories. They're generally more fun and more creative and have a lot more freedom than when they're confined to a specific series.
Another incredible comic is Hawkeye by Matt Fraction and David Aja, which is my personal favourite of all time and is kind of a golden standard in terms of paneling ans colouring in my opinion. There's also the 2016 Power Man and Iron Fist run, Flashpoint from DC is also good.
If you're ever up for a long series, my only recommendation is Transformers More Than Meets The Eye from the IDW line. That and The Wreckers Saga from IDW. Genuine masterpieces of art, storytelling and character writing.

I am a huge comic book collector/reader, I can help you out.

What characters from Marvel pique your interested exactly? Do you enjoy multiverse stories, or emotional character stories? Do you prefer events/current continuity or do you prefer old continuity and older stories? Once I get an idea of what you may be into I can dish out some suggestions @Cheela

for now i going to say Spiderman, X-men and the Fantastic Four are the ones i have memories of their videogames or their early movies, i have not seen the MCU but i will say the multiverse stuff sounds interesting to me soo i am down to check it out. And yeah event continuity is great but scares me because there is too much xD

Id say the best place to start with comic books are the marvel masterworks spider-man collections. The og stories are super simple yet effective at telling you everything you need to know about the character, have easy to follow panels, and are largely episodic so you dont have to worry about some big overarching continuity.

One thing I've always hated is the sheer amount of issues and how hard it'll be to keep track of 20 books. I can't imagine trying to do that with 100+ Marvel books. I recommend maybe finding a pirate site tbh.

As for actual choices, idk tbh. I'm not really a comic guy, I know way more about normal books, some graphic novels and manga. I guess I'll say the Archie runs of Sonic and Mega Man even if both are going to forever be unfinished.

I also remember there was a Brazilian Mega Man comic run that was completely unhinged and insane, while also being semi official because it was abandoned by Capcom but was kept alive a few years more

Speaking of unhinged and insane comic runs

the first thing you need to understand about comics before getting into them, especially from DC or Marvel, is that it is ok to not understand everything that's happening in a book. There's decades of lore and events so it's basically impossible to know everything. Every few years DC will do a kind of soft relaunch that acts as a good jumping on point for new readers and luckily they've recently done that with "All in" that's going on right now which started last year. This would be a good place to pick up any DC books you'd be interested. Alternatively, there alternate universes like Marvel's Ultimate universe which is also only about a year in so it'd be a good place to start. Or DC's new absolute universe. These are alternative versions of the character's though with major changes so if you want to read the "real" versions of a character then id recommend just looking on reddit for a character's best run/series and just starting there.
Basically you can just search up the must reads or just pick a character you like, and see if they have something that interests you.

readcomicsonline.li - online comics for free but you need an adblocker
getcomicsonline.org - download comics as cbz or cbr files and use a comic reader app to open them and read.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL COMIC BOOK STORE IF YOU CAN!!! if you can't then no hate, enjoy anyways!

For marvel and dc id go with Omnibuses and single book stories., they're expensive but contain the complete stories which can go a decade plus long I'd for dc infinite crisis and batman broken city and watchmen the 2019 edition.

For marvel I'd go with the marvel masterworks series they're big collection books containing classic marvel stories more specifically the very first issues of xmen Spiderman and more.

As far as standalone I really only know Spiderman right now and for that the infinity stones omnibuses, Spiderman the complete saga, and one masterworks collection I recommend is the uncanny xmen, the uncanny xmen are the ones that everyone knows and these are their first appearances.

For non capeshit id recommend the massive omnibus 1 the library edition cuz they're cheaper usually simply put one day every natural disaster you can think of happened not all in a single day but it may as well as have it's upto a man named Israel and his crew to help the world get back up on its feet whilst also preventing more of humanity from extracting and harming nature too much they don't want to kill but there definitely not hesitating either.

I'd also recommend the idw comic sonic the hedgehog scrapnik island if you're like me who grew up with sonics xbox 360 and was humiliated by people like grame grumps back in the day trust me when I say you might just shed a single fucking tear OVER A GODDAMM SONIC BOOK slightly spoiling the story here but sonic and tails crash on scrapnik and have to deal with more or less every mecha sonic trying to do some sort of soul and mind transplant

I will make 3 recommendations, these aren't exactly obscure but they don't get much notice these days. All are great for their own reasons:
Discword
Preacher
Johnny the Homicidal Maniac

This is my favorite Marvel story out of the ones I've read:
813NhXAicML.jpg
It's straight up AMAZING.

I'm looking into reading this before I really dive into the meaty X-Men stuff, myself:
71Vvfb+xDtL._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_.jpg
I'm told it's a sort of recounting of the pre-Claremont era and the Claremont era (which is known as the foundational era for X-Men), and seems like a good starting point if the main narrative feels too big and daunting. Though I've also heard the latest reboot from last year is a good starting point.

Watchmen is also a must-read!

Outside of Marvel/DC, I also really like Spawn, Maxx and Scud: The Disposable Assassin when it comes to american superhero comics.

If I don't own the book physically I use the Marvel Unlimited app. I got a free month from Marvel Rivals and I think you should be able to as well (if the app exists where you life ofc)

I recommend reading things like The Walking dead or the IDW/Marvel Transformers comics, with that you are have lot to read for a long time.

I guess I *might* have a few opinions on the matter, let's see...

So other folks have pointed out a bunch of a ways to read things online, and really if you just google "read *insert comic*" you'll find what you're looking for. (It might run terrible on mobile, though). Linking directly to piracy sites is against one of RGT's rules, but it's pretty easy to find on r/piracy and whatnot.

There's also the legal option, Marvel Unlimited; it's a yearly sub, the comic reader on the app works well, and the selection is genuinely *massive*. They haven't put everything on there yet, but you'd never run out of options. I've cut a lot of things out of my budget, but Unlimited is some pretty great value. (They also curate stuff to try out occasionally, and put in enough effort with tagging the available books that the search function works pretty well). The latest books go on there three months after release, so sometimes I would read something I loved on Unlimited and then dash off to the local comic shop to buy the latest stuff just to keep the story going.

Now, for the eternal question of *what* to read? The "anyone reading comics?" thread has a lot of suggestions in it already (and it might simply be an outlet for me to talk about the new comics I read each week, natch), but the answer for me growing up was "whatever looked interesting". You'll never really be totally up to date on the continuity, clocking every side character and their current status in the world. Thing is, if the writer is up to snuff? None of that matters, they'll make a fun story regardless. Pick a character you like and want to read about, or just grab a cover that looks cool!

....
..
.

Yeah, I can recommend some specific comics though, I'm not gonna be totally boring!

1744873632148.jpegFor Spider-Man, it's hard to go wrong with the writer Dan Slott. I believe he's written more issues than anyone else living, and a lot of it's pretty great. Specifically, we're looking at runs (collected as trade paperbacks or TPB's, which you can purchase or "find" if you want one big book instead of single issues) like, in order, Big Time, Spider-Island, Ends of the Earth, and Dying Wish. After that, for *reasons*, the book becomes Superior Spider-Man for a couple years. It's a really wild story, any of which is fun. Past that, there's Spider-Verse, though as a warning that story doesn't resemble the movies they helped inspire.

Here's a more comprehensive list for Spidey, if you want some specific stories to search for by name or if you'd like to follow the order they were released in.

Don't get too hung up on being thorough or following a list though, that's just useful for reference.

1744870294877.pngWhen it comes to the Fantastic Four, it's hard to start anywhere but with Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Specifically, The Coming of Galactus. Space God is coming to dine out on Earth, and it's up to four clowns in spandex to ruin his meal. They've tried to adapt this twice already, and the upcoming MCU film looks to be dipping into the same well. It's like the Dark Phoenix Saga in that sense, the one story that everyone who likes these characters brings up without fail. It *is* a good story though, so long as you vibe with Stan Lee's pseudo-Shakespearean dialogue.

More recently, Jonathan Hickman is maybe my favorite modern FF writer, and his run on the main book tied into his later Avengers/New Avengers series, which are the basis for Infinity War if you enjoyed that movie. Eventually all of his story threads paid off in the event Secret Wars, which has a big climactic standoff between Reed Richards and his rival, Dr. Doom.

1744870902760.pngThese collected editions are just called Fantastic Four by Johnathan Hickman and then a volume number, for the most part. Also, the first two volumes primarily feature the art of Dave Eaglesham, who has a very "classic" comic style, he's a bit like Capeshit Norman Rockwell. His stuff is great here! The only thing to keep in mind is that this run comes at the tail end of Marvel's Civil War event. It was a little bit like the movie, in that all the heroes took sides against each other; in the aftermath, Reed Richards becomes obsessed with figuring out how disasters like that can be avoided; Hickman's Reed spends a lot of time grappling with how best to serve the world, while still being present with his family.

Here's another resource for searching for stories and the like!

1744872265250.pngFinally, the X-Men! They're a bit weird, the original stuff is actually pretty miserable. No one cared that much until they get the sexy revamp by Chris Claremont, who was pretty the Lord High Author of good X-Men stories for years. Dark Phoenix, Inferno, Days of Future Past, The New Mutants, Rogue, Psylocke, Gambit, Kitty Pride, Mystique, Emma Frost, Jubilee, Sabretooth, most of the interesting shit about Wolverine? Several people contributed to the X-books, but Claremont was the lead writer and generally regarded as the creator of allllll of this shit. He brought soap opera-drama to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and we're all the richer for it. Literally, in the case of movie and tv studios that adapted his work wholesale.

All that said, maybe dip a toe in? He's very wordy, very dialogue-heavy. Claremont's X-Men were talkers, and after years on the same books he could get pretty heavy on his own continuity. He occasionally dips back into comics just to resume the stories he left back in the 90's, like none of the intervening decades ever happend. (I think that's part of what inspired X-Men '97). Basically, try it from the early stuff, and then keep going if it's working for you.

1744872379640.pngAfter Claremont, the next big thing in X-Men was Grant Morrison's New X-Men, with artist Frank Quitely. Mutants became a genuine subculture, and the stories were wild with imagination. Emma Frost became a genuinely interesting character, Cyclops and Phoenix's marriage got complicated to say the least, and future writers got inspired for decades to come. Morrison had revamped the Justice League for DC just a few years prior, and he gave the same life-giving aid to the X-Men here. It's often too weird to describe, just try it out!

Two more quick rec's for Marvel's Mutants: Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon, and The Krakoan Age, starting with House of X. Astonishing is just a great adventure that's nostalgic for Claremonts work, but adapted for a modern audience. (The art by John Cassaday is incredible, too). It's probably the last story to do anything interesting with Colossus too, if that's a character you enjoy. Krakoa, on the other hand, was a huge step in a new direction for the X-lineup in general. Basically all the mutants start a country, and start taking major geopolitical steps to undo their persecution in the world. It's such a big idea, that despite years of different books and writers it still feels like they didn't really tap it's potential.

1744873392068.pngLike before, here's some references for specific titles of books and reading orders if you want to keep with a story!

That's a few things to go on, and no doubt myself and others will be happy to ramble on if you have any questions or just like a particular book and want to talk about it! There's a lot of great DC comics as well, and loads of things from other publishers of course.

(I'm reading a book right now called Kill Train, where a mother on the verge of a mental break finds out that her subway train has been randomly selected for murder, as part of some dystopian population control measure. The government releases loads of homicidal maniacs to slaughter the passengers, and just hoses it down at the end of the line. After a pep talk from a college friend unfortunate enough to be on the same train, our protagonist rallies some would-be victims and weaponizes her fragile mental state to kill the bastards first. Surprisingly more funny and crowd-pleasing than it sounds!)

Locate a run of the Groo the Wanderer that Marvel/Epic put out in the 80s, and enjoy
Okay ignore everything else and do this. My cousins gave me Groo comics to read growing up, and now I'm an adult who still reads this shit. Clearly, it works.
