If we are talking about purely physical games in my collection, it's well over 250. It was over 500 a few years back, but I've since gotten rid of a LOT of my collection since then because: 1) I knew I would never get to them, and, more importantly; 2) I lost interest in most of them due to my age and severe depression. I still have a lot of rather rare (and extremely expensive now) games, but I used to be a rare game hunter for JRPGs back in the 2000s and 2010s, and I just don't have much interest in them anymore.

I don't think about digital games because my GOG catalogue is over 300 games (most of which I've not touched), and my Steam catalogue is pushing about 60ish(?) (I never liked Steam once it became a DRM platform). And I'm not even going to think about all the JP VNs and doujin games in my digital collection I've amassed since about 2004....

Wow, and i thought my backlog was bad back when i started!

I started to take my backlog seriously back in 2022. Created a list, separated by console and everything. I feel like that was a huge incentive.
Since then i've beaten a total of 343 games. I'm pretty much done with everything that isn't a JRPG. i have about 40-50 Jrpg's left and that's it. Probably will take a few years since those games are long but i'm not in a hurry, i'm here to have fun and discover new and interesting stuff.

Backlogs become pathological after a while, or pointless at best if a person doesn't actually use it.

My list started growing excessively so I started saying, "OK, just play [various games] FOR 15 MINUTES or a little while to get a taste." Then I delete them from the list if I don't really want to play them again or I've seen "enough". Many of them stay in my library even when I delete them from the backlog list, so it's not like they disappear from the universe.

If a chef makes food, you only need one bit to know what it tastes like. Games are art, programming, sound, level design. (Notice I didn't say "plots" in that list, since plots are irrelevant but an insecure gamer will use a plot point in hour #87 to claim that a person can't judge a videogame unless they played it for 87 hours to see the plot point.)

For a case where a person wants to think about a game(s) and not necessarily play it, which I think is more common than people consciously recognize, make a file of screenshots and notes/links separate from "backlog". A backlog is not a "don't forget this thing exists" file! I support appropriate records!
