Horror in non-horror games

Walking around on a rainy day in persona 4, the way the music stops and you can only hear your footsteps plus the added background atmosphere of the game kinda of being sad and uneasy makes for perfect horror

Mother 3's already a bit of an outlier in terms of Nintendo's output tonally speaking (and hell, I'd say it's much more morose than the other games in the series), but Tanetane Island in particular standing out as a harrowing experience to play though. It's the very definition of a bad trip, with every party member's insecurities thrown right back at them in such a blunt, emotionally painful way that it really got to me when I first played through it...😢

This is what i like to call "horror media for children"

Yeah, thats a classic. Silent Hill levels of psychological horror but on a Zelda game. I would say its more sad than creepy for me though.

I used to be terrified of wet dry world from mario 64 when i was a kid, i also used to feel a little scared and uncomfortable while playing some gmod maps alone, and the bridge stage from crash 1 creeped me out a little bit because it reminded me of silent hill lol

Funnily enough, I never tought Wet-Dry World too scary. I always tought it to be very intriguing actualy but I totaly understand why some people would be creeped out. I loved the water mechanic and the hidden city on that level.

Not exactly horrifying, but there's something creepy about Mega Man 2's last level, with its complete lack of music and enemies.

I think it was supposed to be a horror game though.
I'm pretty sure it was marketed as a bubbly VN/Dating Sim.

And a horror game has to be dark (so dark that you can't even see what's in front of you), gory, gloomy, claustrophobic and full of jump scares. Without these cheap tricks it's not a horror game.

Drag-On Dragoon/Drakengard. Both the first and the third game are actually goddamn scary despite not even being in proper horror genre, the fucked up elements really came forth both ingame and settingwise.

Nah uh the most sucessful horror franchise begs to disagree resident evil......

it's not supposed to be horror but the great library in ff5 fuckin spooked me cos i had to go deep into the darkness of it

another instance was exdeath's castle

the whole castle interior just turned into fuckin skeletons and corpses and there were so many paths to take and to the kid me back then, it was too much, and i never really got past it on the PS1 (i finished it few years later on the VBA though)

Who the FUCK at Nintendo thought this was an okay thing to do!?!??!

Shadow temple was more like a Doom level! Every wall, everything look like a horror game!-
The name of this guy was dead hand because he was dead and he attack you with hands.
Shadow temple boss was scary too.

Seriously when he came out from kakariko well I really jump back. All the game there weren't any invisible enemy but this guy said "who said I can't go insivble?"
In fact in boss room I though he would be invisible but he wasn't!
Just loo, to more image from map itself:

Final fantasy 7, Sephiroth/Jenova literally haunting cloud. As a kid I found sephiroth to be frightening.

Metal gear solid - psycho mantis segment especially on approach with the creepy music.

Alundra - various bits were creepy imo, especially the nightmares and the plot twist (I'll not spoil it just in case)

Metroid Fusion, does that count? I think it was intended to be creepy.... But still I didn't expect that from a Metroid game.

Altered Beast on Genesis/Megadrive. Everything about this game, the soundtrack, the boss' laugh, the cutscenes between stages. Its all quite dark, creepy and unsettling. Great game

The sound test message for Sonic CD. It plays the boss theme with a bunch of weird looking Sonic faces in the background. Finding this code online and seeing this in game, creeped me out.

Funnily enough, there's a Japanese soundtrack and that one plays a less terrifying theme that will make your head bop
