hi, i was looking into getting one of those mod cartridges for the saturn.. pseudo saturn, saroo, one of those kinds of things. i want to be able to play games from other regions and english reproduction discs of some japanese exclusive games like baroque and revolutionary girl utena. what's my best option for one of these that isn't crazy expensive? i have saturn discs and want to keep using them, but i've heard some of these take away the disc functionality?? my saturn is japanese if that helps, i don't know anything about this kinda stuff, i just like the saturn a lot.

The Saroo would be the best option for you. It's not too expensive and would not need to replace the drive like the Fenrir does.

I do have a Pseudo Saturn cart that I am not using since I installed a Fenrir in my Saturn back in February.

It's been a few years since I booted up my old Pseudo saturn. Now Fenrir clones are on Ali-express its just easier to chose the optical drive replacement.

But if you want to stay vanilla, Pseudo-Kai should over ride your Saturn's default start screen (The spaceship CD visualiser) and you can chose regions from Pseudo's setting menu.
Then you just burn a disc and it will works.
Make sure they're CD-R's (Not CD-RW) and you should burn games under x4 speed for stability, sometimes the Saturn fails to read data burnt as the x52 rate we're all used too.

If you're buying a pre-flashed card all of the settings will be pre-installed you just need to provide the pirated CD's.
But you can always burn a Pseudo-Kai boot disc and flash an Action Replay Plus cartridge.

SaturnBIOS_Dump02

To manually flash a cartridge you just remove the top case of the Saturn and do a live disc swap after the Saturn finished its its security check on a legitimate game.
Black screen means you switch discs.
Due to the Saturn's slow read speed you have a solid 3 seconds to switch the discs once the security check is complete. This only needs to be done once, after the action replay cart is flashed Pseudo-Kai will take over you just need to restart the console.

whoaa thank you so much for this, you really know what you're talking about!!

If you have the money, the Sega Satiator is what I have and I love it. There's apparently a clone of it on AliExpress that's almost as cheap as a Saroo, but no idea how good it is compared to the real thing. Assuming it has a recent-ish firmware on it it should have near-100% compatibility and plug easily into the expansion port.
