Pretty rough out there in the comments, like 80% haters, 20% glad of the speed running content.

:loldog

This is funny taken out of context, but this is after he lost so he was just having some dumb fun with it.

He said and did way more stupid things. Like his non-apology video.

I don't think this is only haters, some comments were critical of Karl and pointing out his many mistake rather than just insulting him. He really did take things way to far just for clout.

I'm not surprised, given how invested he was in this. As Leikeylosh said, he fundraised money for something people didn't know the true reason behind. Would imagine a lot of people see him as petty, given how hard he went in on making videos about Billy gossip. I'm glad he's doing more speedrunning stuff, but it's gonna take at least a few months for the heat to die down.

The "I lost " video was what I expected : textbook gaslighting lol.
As I said before, Karl should've stuck to speedrunning content. At first I was hoping he'd win, but once he got deep into the Apollo Legend aspect and continuing to make like 20 videos reassuring us that yes, Silly Bitchell is in fact an asshole, and yes, I am in fact still suing him. It just got tiring and I stopped watching long before the court date. Idk, you reap what you sow I suppose.

I suspect once he started exposing cheaters he got much more views that with plain speedrunning videos. But he got carried away with Billy. Exposing cheaters is fine I guess every now and then but not getting obsessed with anyone to the point you do 20-some videos on them.

I also don't agree on using thumbnails like this one:

I mean he cheated, does it allow us to put his face up there with that text for everyone to see millions of times? Seems a bit extreme. It's a young lad, we all make mistakes. He didn't kill anyone. To me this is too much, it's borderline harassing.

I agree, I'd much rather hear about new records or skips or whatever - actual speedrunning content in other words - than community drama. Maybe in cases of like decade-plus records being proven as fake, sure, that's worth a video. But I don't really care about some random teen faking a speedrun in a community that's pretty small to begin with. Just more grist for the drama mill.

Drama-farming content guy in a terminally online community of socially challenged gamers is like a fox in the hen-house. Easy pickin's.

Jobst bit off more than he could chew this time though, and Cock-Of-The-Walk Big Willy Mithcell wouldn't be bullied. Fox bit the tail of a Wolf now and all the chickens that used to be fans are in the comments saying 'Wait, I've been following for months/years and you never made it clear this was over Apollo Legend...", "I donated to the court fund because I thought it was financially unfeasible for you to continue otherwise!" (PS it wasn't), because he'd been pulling the wool over their eyes.

The Judge said it best: "Mitchell cheated at a video game 40 years ago but you said he caused a suicide with no evidence of such and statements to the opposite. Plus you're a bit of an arrogant twat and fleeced your parasocial audience of frivolous cash under the guise of justice for Donkey Kong or something. Mitchell wins, court adjourned."

Yeah that was my biggest issue with Karl, he's basically a bully. Exposing a cheater is one thing, but he definitively has that "hey guys, lets look and laugh at him" attitude. He's super abbrasive, yet he acts like he's the better man telling his audience "come on guys, don't go be mean to that person".
People make mistakes, no need to have these mistakes on the internet forever in a very humiliating video.

I've done a my fair share of stupid things, I grew up, and I wouldn't want to have it shoven in my throat by a legion of stupid fanboys because someone made a video about it.

Funny thing is, I'm on his discord, and someone posted negative comments from youtube there. He asked to not put these types of comments on there. Dude loves to humiliate others but is super sensitive about negative comments.

It's hard for me to feel bad about him, this whole situation feels more like karma than anything else to be honest.

Please 2025, don't have Summoning Salt be an actual asshole.
Nah SS is way to amazing and wholesome ::heart

I see Salt every so often in some small score attack channels I follow (~20 viewers), and he's pretty nice. If he's an ass, he's smart enough to be an ass behind closed doors.

I only found out about Karl Jobst when he uncovered the Completionist with SomeOrdinaryGamers and that blew up in the gaming space. SOG did give some of his insight on the Karl verdict and how not even he knew the lawsuit was over defamation and figured it was about the cheating scandal and he worked with Karl on multiple stories. But yeah, like SOG I have to side with Billy in this court case sadly even if Karl helped bring to life how corrupt the Completionist is.

I think he has the perfect balance of being nice and positive without it being other the top or his whole personality (like Jirard or Degeneres), which makes him looks genuine in my eyes.

I could be wrong but I don't think so. Probably my favorite youtuber with ColourShed.

As a follower of Karl I wasn't expecting him to lose, but I didn't follow the ins and outs of the case either. Now it's easy to beat a dead horse, and many people are doing just that. I guess that's how people are nowadays. Anyway...

PS: Karl Jobst is a youtuber that exposes cheaters. Billy Mitchell is a retro gaming record holder or so I'm told.

Verdict:

I was also pretty shocked when I found out, wort of all is the character assassination by all the people "covering" the subject beating the dead horse is a nice way to put it.

Although I admit that Karl should have addressed the point of the subject of the lawsuit more thoughtfully, not for people like us that followed him but for a broader audience that was gathering to see David take on Goliath.

He's really doubled down on the speedrunning police drama. Why not celebrate speedrunning achievements rather than give a spotlight to these frauds? I guess it doesn't get as many clicks. Dude's a hack 🥀

Because drama is fun.

lol, I just watched Karl's new video today then saw the bumps on this thread. coincidence? >_>

Well, for the Karl fans, looks like Billy's victory was Pyrrhic. Karl is blessed that his wife makes good money and is able to buy out all their joint assets under AUS bankruptcy law. So looks like Karl only ended up ruining his personal credit (via bankruptcy) in this exchange (with the crowd funding, he payed significantly less out of pocket than Billy). His wife is probably also not happy with him to need to burn ~250k of her own liquid cash on this. He might be sleeping on the couch awhile :loldog But it looks like life will pretty much go on for Karl as normal.

Meanwhile, Billy spent >600k and will be lucky to even get ~100k out of this. What was the point? Mad props to him though, he did win so was in the right.
Because drama is fun.
Yea, a shit show is always fun, I am a sucker for legal drama >_< I like to learn things. But what a waste of so much money and court resources/time from both sides ::sadkirby

It's odd how "momentum" works on the internet. From what I understand, Karl was deceptive about what the lawsuit was about, i.e. the defamation related to the Apollo Legend comments. He lost the lawsuit, and also lost in the court of public opinion. I don't blame people being pissed, since being sued for making untrue defamatory remarks is a lot less charitable defense compared to "Billy Mitchell sued me because I said he cheated at Donkey Kong", and surely he would have had less donations if this were known at the time. Still, just because Karl lied about this matter, it doesn't exonerate Billy of his past shady-ness, and he hasn't produced any evidence to counter the claims of spliced footage and whatnot as far as I know. Yet he's riding on a high horse and seems to have gained favor with portions of the internet. Do people really only remember the most recent thing a person has done? If somebody produces a gotcha moment against Silly Bitchell does the public go back to disliking him? Does that then take the heat off of Karl Jobber?

I will say, Jobst being deceptive about this stuff has put me off of his content, I haven't watched anything of his since then. There has also been deception on the part of Mutahar/SomeOrdinaryGamers lying about being an engineer, which definitely puts me off of him. Ironically, these two were instrumental in exposing The Competionist's lies last year when it came to donating charity money he'd helped to raise. Kind of undermines anything they say about others when they themselves exaggerate or hide the truth. I suppose anyone who gets involved in influencer drama will inevitably eat others and be eaten in turn to form the neverending drama ouroboros.

I was always more inclined to believe that Karl mishandled things rather than being an outright liar about it. I feel the latest video brought some nuance that needed to come up to light, including Karl finally admitting to some of his own shortcomings.

He still seems to be okay taking money from shady sponsors (well, he's kinda gonna need now more than ever), and ridicularizing cheaters to a questionable degree, but I'm always interested in seeing his point of view.

I wish he spoke more naturally in his videos though. I swear, he turns more and more into a robot with each new video.

Would you say the new video is worth a watch for a former-ish fan? I saw that the runtime is pretty long, so I figured it was comprehensive. He definitely is guilty of being very clickbait-y with his video titles and thumbnails, but that is unfortunately the norm with most creators these days. It is certainly weird hearing him in the videos "normally" and then hearing his voice in a video where he is on a call with someone. Again, I suppose "YouTube voice" is a pretty common meta, even if it seems unnatural and unnecessary.

Most people want every situation to have clear-cut good guys and bad guys.

Well the video is overly exhaustive on some details (as you may have guessed by the runtime lmao)

If you're curious for a new perspective on the matter, then yeah the first few minutes are worth a watch, but if at some point you grow bored of the video you can just close it. Only continue if you're that curious on the details or have nothing better to do.

Agreed. That rarely works out, there are usually shades of gray involved. Honestly, the people that present themselves as being ultra-wholesome sometimes turn out to be worse than everyone else.

I'll probably download it when I get home and listen to it tomorrow while at work. Long-drawn out stuff like this is usually what I listen to while working unless I'm jamming to tunes.

lol, so true. And didn't he criticize Billy in a video for acting/speaking/behaving weird? I imagine Billy would seem more like a normal person irl than Karl. That's not saying much though :loldog they both seem like cartoon characters. Nothing wrong with being odd, I'm sure I irritate my irl friends with my idiosyncrasies, but Karl comes off like an incredibly strange person when he speaks.
Would you say the new video is worth a watch for a former-ish fan?
Yea, but just if you want to actually know what the financial aftermath is. So many youtubers got so much wrong on the financial parts and AUS law, and I will say he does give a clear and concise discussion of that. But yea, you can turn it off after that, it goes on pretty long about topics/points not too interesting. To be fair though, I just had it mostly playing in background...

I assume Karl acts normal irl, it's just his style of recording that weirds me out a bit. At this point it's clear to me that's he submitted his voice to some AI text-to-speech service, as there's points I'm fairly certain I heard artifacts in it.
