Have you ever used RetroAchievements on an emulator?

I've gotten into them a lot lately. Some of the achievements lists can be... tiring, but for the most part I've been enjoying replaying older games to at least mark them down as completed.

I've found them sometimes a pain to set up, but I've mostly had pretty positive experiences, especially with PS1 games via DuckStation.

I was never a fan of Achievements when PS3/Xbox 360 started doing them, so I was never really interested in RetroAchievements

I loved it and started using it a couple years back, but then I discovered a very annoying problem with it: every time an emulator gets updated, it breaks the achievement detection and then you have to wait for them to catch up to the new emu version. I had this happen twice, and sadly the second time ended with me forgetting my password for the new machine I installed the new version of my emulator (retroarch) on, and now the site won't send me a reset password request when asked, so I'm locked out of my account and cannot put it back on any emulator I have that supports it. Though honestly, I doubt I would since like I said, emulator updates kept breaking things.

Awesome idea though. I went through Dragon Quest 5 on Retroarch and got most of the achievements until an update borked it.

I've been using them since 2023, and they really do increase the replay value of games, but I think there are three problems with them.

First, they should only be used in games you've already finished, because otherwise you focus more on getting those achievements than enjoying the game. Second, many of those achievements involve a fairly high level of difficulty, which makes it not worth mastering the set.

For example, they give you a challenge to defeat a certain boss without taking damage, which is understandable, but then they add extras such as not being able to use recovery items, having to be at level 5 maximum, and not being able to use certain weapons or spells, etc.
I can understand that many people like these challenges, but in my opinion, they should be separate sets for hardcore players.

And finally, they still haven't added an option to unlock them in offline mode.

Apparently I set it up on my PSP emulator, but I almost never play PSP, and when I do it's usually a translation, so I don't know how that'll transfer over. 😅
