Have you ever felt "too old" for a game/franchise you love?

I remember getting to play Pokemon Diamond when it first came out (through the utter sorcery of having a friend rich enough to own a Nintendo DS), and feeling an immediate disconnection from the plot, setting and characters in a way that felt utterly foreign to me at the time.

Game looked awesome and played just as well as everything that came before it, but the more I explored its world, the more I felt like I shouldn't be there at all.

I guess I could blame my sudden disinterest on being 16 and not wanting to admit that I still watched/played a so-called "kid's game" at a time when image and peer perception mattered the most. I could also say that my (downright nightmarish) misadventures while trying to emulate Pokemon Ruby just a few months earlier had numbed me to the point of not caring about the whole thing anymore (and having your computer reliably crash on 2D doors would do that to you), but I'm not sure I buy my own excuses -- I was enjoying a lot of similar things at the time and not caring that much about what everyone else thought about it, but this feeling never quite left and remains the chief reason why I haven't played anything newer than Black & White 2 (because my friend got that one as well), despite this series being responsible for creating some of my fondest memories and introducing me to some of my best friends.

What about you? Is this something that you have experienced yourself or am I just a freak for even feeling this way?

Power Rangers (and Super Sentai/Tokusatsu in general)

In my late HS years I seriously indulged in martial arts, then looked back at toku and was dismayed that IRL fighting and movie fighting ain't the same. Couple of years later, got introduced to chambara then stuck to it, left toku/sentai for good

One bad thing due to that was I never managed to play Power Rangers the Movie for the GENESIS which was on my list back then; never played it even now...

I wouldn't say I felt too old per se. More like I outgrew the series.
I used to love playing Sonic the Hedgehog, original Sega Genesis mind you. But after some years and them all basically being a run to the right games, I kind of just felt disdain for them.

When the new 3D Sonic games came out, I kind of got back into it but it was just the same with a 3D coat of paint. Not including Sonic Adventure mind you, I mean more like Sonic Generations and the like. And nah, I can pick up Pokémon now, at least the older DS and GBA ones, and play them and not give a fuck who thinks I'm too old for it.

Honestly, I think your experience is more "normal" and I'm more the "freak" for never really growing out of games, shows, movies primarily aimed at children/families in general :loldog

I never cared for Game of Thrones, but Disney's "Amphibia" was my emotionally devastating high-fantasy show of choice::winkfelix

Nope. I feel like everything I love has grown up with me. A lot of games I'm nostalgic for now get remakes/remasters. The toy/figure industry regularly puts out 80s and 90s inspired stuff. And a lot of things I liked when I was younger (like video games) have gotten more popular and mainstream.

I've never had to outgrow anything.

When I heard some coworkers talking about Pokémon and the new mega evolutions, I knew I didn't understand the game anymore.
OMG! This!

My kids play Pokemon these days (passing down the torch ;D) and I can barely understand a thing of what they say.

Haha! I looooove Amphibia.

Come to think of it, I did see pretty much the same Power Rangers toys in Target the other week as the ones I had when I was like 5.

Can't say I feel like I've outgrown any game franchise but I will say, I do not enjoy the crafting/life sim esque genre of games as much as I used to (like animal crossing or the sims).

They can be good fun if I want to have a "forever" project as I call them but I simply do not have the creativity for them like I used to.

These days I would rather spend that time playing RPGs and making my notepad of party builds look like the insane ramblings of a nutcase.

Upside, I have tomorrow or rather today off, so I got most of the day to do whatever.
I'm probably going to catch up on some gaming <Any suggestions?> and other tech stuff.

I already did the winterizing of the house, so go me I suppose. The downside is I don't know what to play.

Also, moving 600GB of Xbox 360 games to a new drive takes For-FUCKING-ever ::sailor-embarrassed

Basically same; if there are others then I've just grown away from them without really noticing, but with sonic it kinda crystallized when i played 06.

I really haven't played any of the 3D titles until I gave frontiers a try, but the cutscenes made me feel like i was watching Paw Patrol with my nephew

I'm not exactly sure why I feel this way, but I do feel like if I had been born much later, I would've been able to understand the hype for Undertale. I gave it a good try and it just did nothing for me, but people love that game in the same way that people loved Homestuck, which was another thing I tried and was like, "this is clearly not for me, because what even is this." Not that they're wrong or bad people, I don't think that, but it's just the vibe I get about it.

Ya, Sonic Frontiers just didn't click with me. It looked nice, but I dunno, something about the way the game played or rather looked like it did. I dunno, just seemed so out of place for Sonic

Same about Undertale and a lot of other games.

Stuff like Undertale, I don't know, I just can't get into it. Like Binding of Isaac and Cult of the Lamb.
I'm sure if I were a teen or such now, I would probably love them. But as it stands, they just don't interest me visually and wouldn't hold my attention. But again, I'm not the target age group for these kinds of games.

With something like Undertale, It makes me happy to know that for a lot of younger people it's their first something they didn't think a game could be experience. I think I'm closer in age to Toby Fox than I am to Toby Fox's target audience, though.

That's how I feel about stuff like Minecraft & Fortnite. It doesn't seem to matter what recognizable pop culture property they use to promote them, I just don't get it. I've played them, but I don't "get" them.

I'm not a fan of Minecraft but I get it at least, even if you forgo the main game, the survival stuff, and just do freebuild mode. It's basically a giant Lego set or Duplo blocks etc. It's fun in that regard anyway.

If I were really artistically creative, I would absolutely love it. But I'm not so.

As to Fortnite ya I agree they could throw literal pornstar skins in that game and I wouldn't care.
It's just a silly MOBA, and I hate MOBA and PVP oriented games. I've always been more of a solo player, save for years ago when I played ESO. <Ebonheart Pact Darkelf Vampire yo>

Not really. My brain stopped developing when I was 16, so I mostly like the same stuff I did back then. But you know what? When I think about it, I was a big Call of Duty guy (played a lot of MW1,2,3 and BO2 multiplayer) and after a long break I was curious what more modern CODs look like. Well I don't have to tell you how old I felt looking at all that crazy movement they have now. It made me want to retire ::sailor-embarrassed

Sometimes I think I outgrew Pokémon, but sometimes I like to boot up a randomized ROM of Fire Red and have a blast, so I think it's more that Pokémon is getting worse as time passes.

There's also the issue of remembering a game as "very good" but then you play it and it's mid, but that's more of "when I was a kid I had not critical thinking skills and found everything fun".

Except Hamtaro Ham-Ham Heartbreak. That one never gets old

2D Mario Bros games it's the same shit collect coins defeat Bowser rescue peach. I loved them as a kid now I find them boring

Pokemon pretty much yea. Other games not so much. Although I can still play old Pokemons but more for nostalgia purposes lol
