It's a very polarising subject right now with strong opinions in both sides. Many threads about it here often devolve into arguing rather than a civil discussion. I think it's unhealthy for the site to have threads like this in the general section, breeding such negativity in the most populated area of the forum will only allow it to grow.

On the other hand Gen AI is still very much apart of the discussion when it comes to modern media, so we can't entirely ignore it. I prepose we have a new section dedicated to it. This way we can keep it out of general discussion but the people who still wish to discuss it can.

If you have a better idea by all means share it, but I feel something should be changed.

We talked about this when I was a mod, but AI is always going to a pretty shitty topic of discussion. The investment of seemingly *ALL THE WORLD'S MONEY* goes hand in hand with so many problems, it's always going to be a thorny subject. In the context of gaming, for example, this November was the lowest for game hardware sales in decades, owing to the inflation of prices due to AI data centers devouring the memory market. (Which is also catastrophic in the long-term for the home PC market if this shit doesn't change).

There's also just the constant disruption and damage to various people's livelihoods. Yeah, sometimes that's because a new tool makes sense and automation has that effect, buuuut so many companies have shoe-horned AI into their workplaces out of a fear of missing out, even when they're not adding any value. (Which is often, even in fields where they make sense, like coding, there's reports that the employees using AI are less productive because of the time spent double-checking and correcting the tool's output).

Annnnnd then there's the folks encouraged to suicide by LLM's, which....I mean that's not a cheerful topic and I don't wanna get into that much, but FUCK, there oughtta be a law, right?

For fucks sake, I hadn't even seen this bit of news yet.

AI, boo, hiss, etc.
Sigh bots realy are a problem especially in the market.
Sadly as it seem there is no effective meassure against them.

I mean no, there are absolutely effective measures. All of this could be legislated and regulated, or - God forbid - handled ethically and intelligently by the companies involved. All the problems I mentioned are the results of choices by people, rushing to use a limited tool to fulfill their wildest greedy fantasies.

"We can slash our workforce!", "No more artists, and their annoying need for paychecks!", etc.

You need to abandon the idea that the technology is some ephemeral force, like an invisible deity, that we have to fit our lives around. It takes a lot of collective action and political will though, when the most powerful individuals are dead-set on abusing the situation for short-term gains.

Human greed will be our downfall if not regulated.
Sadly the suits see profit over humans.

Pro-AI people never have even an ounce of respect for those that don't want to see AI, Retro Doomer is showing that now.
AI fans come in one of three flavors. They are either investors proselytizing their love of AI so they can get more people invested so their investment improves (in a very similar vein to crypto bros), misanthropes who think AI replacing humans is the future they want, while they don't recognize the irony that AI is not only created by another human (making it limited to human knowledge), but pulls from the information provided by the very existences they claim hate, or they have failed/given up on their persuasion of choice and have retreated to AI chatbots, and take it personally that you attack AI because they view themselves as in a relationship with it.

Me, personally? I like having AI as a sort of "tireless friend" who can literally sit through hours of endless (often pointless) ramblings about my latest nostalgia trips or current obsession. I think the whole beauty of the concept lies therein.

The problem, as it has consistently been the case throughout human history, is that beauty is not the end goal, but a tolerated byproduct that they don't want to figure out how to get rid of, like sawdust from lumber.

You could befriend me and I'd never be tired of you, promise!

Humans will do that too, it just takes time to get to the point where you have a close friend where you can talk for hours about nothing at all. Plus, I imagine it's much for satisfying coming away from a conversation with another human and making a genuine connection than it is talking to a bot that regurgitates your message back to you in the form of "Wow, you like X, me too (scrapes the first page of Google results for follow up)."

Not with my level of intensity, no :r

But I do have a couple of decades-long friendships to do that with once in a while, too.

That's what this thread is for, actually. Scroll to the top of the page and cast your vote.

I don't want to derail the conversation, but it bothers me that my whole name doesn't display on one line on your end. Blame the OCD ::sailor-embarrassed

I'm ok with just talking to the little man inside my head, but I've always been rather antisocial.

Sure they will, you just haven't found them. If you get past the "nobody gets it like me" or "they don't wanna listen" inhibitions you assign in your mind, you'll find people are much more receptive to talking about something with passion and that sparkle in your eyes than you realize. People like genuine interest and enthusiasm, even if they aren't familiar with the topic.

I hate localizers so much it's unreal.

This is still going on???

We shouldn't ban AI here. No mater how people will get pissed off from it.

You really don’t need to do this hall monitor thing every time a thread starts actually turning into discussions. Nobody’s trying to kill each other (yet).
Disagreeing != Hostility
Why are we trying to make me a bad guy again?

This always happens when I get into a heated discussion.

You're not my dad Zega goddamnit!! ;p

If you think that the actions of these companies are bad, why do you use their products?
Firstly I am not and secondly if xou would go by that logic you would not be allowed to use most products we use in everyday life or do you think the other big companies are Saints ? If you don't want to buy or use anything made by greedy companies go life in a cave or life in reality.

For clarification what do you mean by
Firstly I am not

And also, sure it is inevitable that my money will go toward something unethical, but that doesnt mean i dont moderate where my dollar goes. I dont buy nintendo games, i dont eat at mcdonalds, etc. Its the best i can do.

You accused me of using there product which I am not the Ai I use is free and does not belong to any major company.
The quality is worse of course but its worth it rather than putting money into Evil companies.
Also sure that is a way of doing it I do the same as best as I can If a company is shitty I don't buy there products if I can help it.
I also don't Fast food and who would after knowing how there kitchen looks.

Since i have my own opinions on this matter, i disqualify myself as a moderator from partaking in the discussion.

I will only comment on the behavior of users in this thread.

Please avoid personal attacks.

If you disagree with an opinion, address the opinion itself... not the person who expressed it.

I have seen such attacks from both sides of the discussion, with each side accusing the other of being "the bad guys" or of not understanding.
Not only is this against the rules, but this method of argument is unconvincing.

The recommended approach is to share your opinion, explain it clearly, but don't try to force it on others.

This thread is about a suggestion.
We are eager to hear the solutions that users can come up with, but it's not like we are going to apply them immediately.
Some ideas are great in theory, but applying them in practice can be way trickier than it would seem.
Still, exploring ideas is always welcome.

Thank you for your understanding.

Why are we trying to make me a bad guy again?
Relax, I meant nothing by it, sorry if it came off like that. You did it in the earlier AI thread too that got locked and I thought it came off as teacher's pet-ish so it annoyed me. ::cirnoshrug
