It's a very polarising subject right now with strong opinions in both sides. Many threads about it here often devolve into arguing rather than a civil discussion. I think it's unhealthy for the site to have threads like this in the general section, breeding such negativity in the most populated area of the forum will only allow it to grow.

On the other hand Gen AI is still very much apart of the discussion when it comes to modern media, so we can't entirely ignore it. I prepose we have a new section dedicated to it. This way we can keep it out of general discussion but the people who still wish to discuss it can.

If you have a better idea by all means share it, but I feel something should be changed.

Guys... You are allowed to disagree.

You are allowed to get heated about topics that clearly mean something to y'all (and I'd rather have you pissed off than completely disengaged).

But this is straying into downright rule-breaking territory, and more than one count of it.

Ironically, I now see OP's point fully because of the ongoing arguments I'm seeing in the replies. That's not a good sign for any of you.
Sadly true this gets heated very quickly as people tend to have fixed and strong emotions on it.
A Thread specifically for AI Discussions could be a solution somewhat.

Also you can't just make a Religious or Political thread as they would get closed down very quickly.
If something similar was enacted for AI the same would apply there.
That's my entire point, though?

Also Disagreeing is not equal to Hostility as people disagree all the time its part of being a human we are not a hive mind after all.
Which is what I said. "!=" means "does not equate to".

of course I don't use RGT to generate AI images what stupid take is that but I still would get censored if a ban was intact if I where to post them here which still would be censoring it regardless.
No. You would be censored if your images were removed right now, when there is no rule against it.
If it were a rule however, you'd break it, and as such get a warning or whatever. That's not censorship.

Banning AI Generated images would be the same as banning users who still use it
No it wouldn't? You'd still be free to roam the site. You just wouldn't be allowed to flood the site with AI generated images or start threads that revolve around that particular subject.

Very mature and not Insulting at all...very condescending buddy.
As far as I see I was proven right. It's a matter of reading comprehension, because you misunderstood or misconstrued my post as being against you or whatever. All I did was offer a suggestion. I couldn't care less whether it'd be "approved" or whatever.

OT: Just knowing your post history it's really clear that you end up derailing threads because you don't understand the people arguing against you. You constantly bring up your disdain for the EU and censorship in germany or whatever (which is politics posting), and you're currently derailing the christmas thread because you brought up your hangup with the OP abbreviating the word christmas for religious reasons.
Realize that you're bringing this on yourself.

I'm only defending myself against claims against my person that are untrue, and explaining why.

This would be a ban on AI and removing my ability and that of others to post AI images which is a ban and censorship that you propose.Do you even read what you write ?
And you clearly advocated to enact such a rule which would lead to that.

I find it extremely ironic that people who frequent a piracy website often enough to join its forums are complaining about a tool that creates things based on other people's stuff.
LLMs are not for people, bro. They primarily benefit corporations and their profit at environmental costs. This site is aimed at people who can't buy games or can't have access to the gaming heritage and its history (only achieved by preserving stuff), it's not for corporations. It's like saying Nintendo's greedy benefit people, if that's so why they'd be here instead of browsing Nintendo's marketplace?

Anyway, I'm not interested in debating AI. Debating is not changing my life nor the state of things. If that blanket ban on Gen-AI discourse was a site suggestion, tho, I'd upvote. Not sure if Spike would actually implement the rule anyway.

This has nothing to do with the actual topic.
Bringing this up here just shows how low you step in a discussion.
Besides the Christmas thread only was about Christmas or Xmas so calling it derailing is a bit much.
And complaining about Censorship I take me that right to do so especially if it involves games which it does.
Also the Christmas discussion as far as I am concerned is long over.

Honestly, I'd be fine with treating AI the same way that we treat Religion and Politics. It's pretty clear at this point that it's going to be a derailing topic in any thread, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

There really is no need to be insulting.
Since AI is a controversial topic right now, I'd say it would be reasonable to enact some sort of ruleset against it, as it just turns people on each other. You disagree with that, which is fine.

And you clearly advocated to enact such a rule which would lead to that.
I'm sorry, but this is just "thought crime is real crime" logic.

We have to be allowed to voice our opinions and concerns over certain inflammatory topics without being personally attacked.
You are the one who started this argument with me because you saw my post as a personal attack. It wasn't, I just disagree with you. That doesn't mean I automatically think you are either wrong or not allowed to voice your opinion, but don't claim that I'm some kind of advocate for censorship or whatever just by lifting a proposition.

As someone who studied the topic for a long time and who's very passionate about technology, I'm strongly against generative AI and I steer clear of every thread that even just mentions it, even if I haven't been here long I already skipped more than a dozen threads because of that. I don't like to argue and I don't want to cause flames or trouble, this is a public space and as much as I'd like to be respectful of other people's boundaries, in my experience that's typically a one-way sentiment when talking to the proAI crowd, I will do my part in not interacting with the toxicity around here, but I agree that the topic should need some kind of containment, to me it's sad to see gamers promote a tool that is actively destroying the hobby and us as people.

I already see chaos is sprawling and the discussion is getting way too animated, please don't be mean, it doesn't benefit anyone.

So we are ignoring your condescending tune you had before ha.
Sure you voiced your opinion and you are free do so but then stand to it and don't try to deny it afterwards.
Just Agree to disagree on this topic as this will lead to nowhere.

I'm responding in the same tone you responded to me. I haven't denied anything. I don't like AI and I think regulating it a bit on the site would be healthy.
You accused me of being for censorship by suggesting something, I explained why you misinterpreted or misconstrued my post. Am I not allowed to do that? Sounds a lot like censorship to me.

You can't say that every time you get pushback for instigating a debate, man. ::sailor-embarrassed

Tonberry is not a State, @Retro Doomer
Even if you got banned from posting Gen-AI stuff (which is not happening at all), your freedom of speech would still had been respected.

Chill Ignore GIF by Rooster Teeth

I of course could go on but than it would get heated especially with you attitude and framing.
I stop it here so that it does stay peaceful and I don't want to bother the mods just because you are eager for a fight.

So now you must be a State to censor people...ah whatever believe what you want to believe I am fed up with this totalitarian BS bye.

I will Ignore further replies its a waste of time and energy on you folks.

Once again. I am defending myself against you insinuating I am for censorship because we disagree on something. You can't continue a discussion by threatening to become nasty?
You not being able to see this because you're too angry with me for arbitrary reasons isn't on me.

Is this the kinda thing we as users could vote on? Like maybe we could figure out what the general user base thinks is the best plan, and if the mods see fit, enact that?
That's what the upvote/downvote arrows on the right hand side of suggestion posts are for.
People don't seem to use them quite as often as to make them totally reliable though.

I downvoted this one because I'd rather have either a "ban" on the subject (like I described in my initial post) or let it be as it is now, rather than a full-on containment board where people can just run wild with it, as that feels like kind of a band-aid non-solution that'd just bleed into the rest of the site anyways (I kinda don't think this kind of AI has a place on a forum for talking about retro video games and its culture).

That's what this thread is for, actually. Scroll to the top of the page and cast your vote.

That's literally what freedom of speech is for, it doesn't protect you from privately owned sites or property, just the state.

One could say banning of religion and politics is censorship, yet, we still post here. Different places got different rules.
I dont WANT this site 100% uncensored, i post here at work lol

We talked about this when I was a mod, but AI is always going to a pretty shitty topic of discussion. The investment of seemingly *ALL THE WORLD'S MONEY* goes hand in hand with so many problems, it's always going to be a thorny subject. In the context of gaming, for example, this November was the lowest for game hardware sales in decades, owing to the inflation of prices due to AI data centers devouring the memory market. (Which is also catastrophic in the long-term for the home PC market if this shit doesn't change).

There's also just the constant disruption and damage to various people's livelihoods. Yeah, sometimes that's because a new tool makes sense and automation has that effect, buuuut so many companies have shoe-horned AI into their workplaces out of a fear of missing out, even when they're not adding any value. (Which is often, even in fields where they make sense, like coding, there's reports that the employees using AI are less productive because of the time spent double-checking and correcting the tool's output).

Annnnnd then there's the folks encouraged to suicide by LLM's, which....I mean that's not a cheerful topic and I don't wanna get into that much, but FUCK, there oughtta be a law, right?
