So, a long time ago I saw this game on a Gaming Magazine and has stayed in my mind ever since. I would describe it like Asteroids meets Diablo.
It's a RPG that plays like Asteroids. You roam around the galaxy doing quests, destroying enemy ships and getting exp and money to upgrade your character.

I've been picking up some games that are not that involved so I can play them for a bit and just cool off and it`s a fun game, if just a little bit repetitive and simple.

Has anyone ever tried it? Even maybe tried the multiplayer? You can play locally with up to 4 players which sounds fun.

I rented this game a ton as a kid, but I haven't played it much since. Thanks for reminding me of it, I think I might grab it now!

Such an interesting concept. I've never heard of this one.

I seem to recall that it was developed to be a Dreamcast MMO of sorts, but was scaled back before release.

This checks out. My reaction after first playing the game was that it felt a little half-baked.

Like others have said, I read about this one in magazines and rented it back in the day, too. There was one magazine / website in particular (IGN? Game-Revolution? Official Dreamcast Magazine?) that gave it a pretty glowing review, and in the months that followed would lament that more people didn't give the game a chance.

I wanted to like the game much more than I did, but I feel like it's easier to appreciate it nowadays. Back then, it had a hard time competing for my attention when I already had SoulCalibur, Sonic Adventure, and Air Force Delta at home! But now, I can totally see it obtaining "Hidden Gem" status in the larger Dreamcast library.

An interesting concept? Sure! But the grind is real, and my recollection is that it was VERY easy to die without really knowing what you did wrong. I seem to remember always being under attack, even on "friendly" planets. It ended up being a fine rental choice. For a few bucks, it gave me the chance to experience something new that I wouldn't have paid full price for, otherwise.

For better or worse, the game left a lasting memory, and here I am reminiscing about it twenty five years later. Thanks for jarring the memory banks loose a little bit, OP 🙌

It sure is an interesting concept, but it does feel a little lacking in some places. From what I've played so far there's little to do outside of grinding, picking simple missions and just exploring the world. In a way that's what I needed, just a game to play in short burst without much at stake.

From what I've read and what you have mentioned before, the game indeed was intended to be an MMO (and it seems the were able to make an online version of it)
)

I wouldn't say it's a hidden gem or anything but at least a nice curiosity to check out and maybe even bring some friends along.

I have the game and it was one of the first I've bought back in 2000 when I got my DC.

I never really enjoyed it. I just played to see the "improvements" my ship would acquire after a few level ups. It tends to get boring very fast. I think my last level was 44.

I'm at Level 20 right now and it feels that I've seen everything the game has to offer at the moment. I can shut my mind off for a few minutes while playing it, but it doesn't feel that fun if you are giving it your full attention.
