The PSP, albeit old, is a fantastic handheld. However, it seems that any & all meaningful development of emulators for the portable device has fallen off of the face of the earth for the past 3+ years..

Primarily I'm concerned about the state of SNES emulation on the device. It seems that the most agreed upon "best" SNES emulator for the PSP is the horribly named "s9xTYLme Mod" and it hasn't been updated since 2018... Seven years ago! Which wouldn't be a problem if it were generally "complete;" but it's not.. It has one, huge, gaping hole in it's execution... That is 'Mode 7.' Everything else seems to run great, but the instant any Mode 7 effects show up, everything grinds to an unplayable mess..

For example: Final Fantasy IV. Everything about the game runs great, but the moment it moves to the overworld, it is effectively unplayable. But pull up the menu, enter a town, or a random battle, and everything returns to running like a dream.

Undoubtably this has something to do with the code under the hood. I would assume there is ZERO reason to say the PSP isn't powerful enough to render Mode 7 effects, but here we are..

Is there anything that can be done about this? I would like to help out directly, however I have absolutely no experience coding and would hardly think this would be a very "beginner-friendly" project..

To answer your question, ANYONE can develop software for the psp. Just like they are doing with nes, gb and other older platforms. Sony is not and will not make more games for it, but they will add old psp games to the playstation store(that they have a license for).

Just remember it will be only unofficial games though. Basically the TENGEN method.

Umm... ::sailor-embarrassed

Did you actually read my post, or at least notice which section I posted it in?? I'm not about to attempt to build an SNES emulator from scratch, with zero programming knowledge.. ::badpc

To actually answer the question… yes, for now. But the PSP, in the last few months, seems to be gaining in popularity with folks from the 3DS handheld nostalgia generation, so it’s possible new developments for the PSP are on the way. As long as the system exists, people are bound to make things for it.

Also, I have to second the Retroarch recommendation, if for no other reason than to test out options. Such is the pain of emulation on lower spec and hacked devices: you often can’t rely on any singular emulator to get every job you want done.

I actually tried FFIV on the PSP RetroArch a few days ago, and it was significantly worse! It even locked-up when I tried to exit out of the emulator, forcing me hard reset/turn off my PSP..
I guess the best way to play for the time being is the Anthologies version for the PS1. I’ll try to see if there are any more SFC/SNES emulators for the PSP that may work better. Sucks to hear, and it’s weird since that game doesn’t use any extra chips so it should be fairly compatible with most emulators!

It’s just very strange, and sucks since FFIV is such a good game.

There is also the 'FFIV: Complete Collection' for the PSP itself..
I was using the original mainly because I wanted to play the "Namingway Edition." But also there is zero reason to assume the PSP isn't powerful enough to render the FFIV overworld. The only reason that makes sense, to me, is that the 'Mode 7' part of the emulation hasn't been figured out for the hardware yet..

Oh, 1000%. The PSP is a plenty strong enough handheld to handle the CPU overheads of SNES emulation, but its native sprite warping and distortion capabilities are definitely incompatible with SNES game code. It’s like how the PSP is plenty strong enough to handle the N64’s games, but emulation is way harder since you’re working as a freelance dev without official system documentation or dev kits. My pain with N64 emulation was intense, as it couldn’t handle textures well and had horrific sound emulation.

PPSSPP It is actually still being developed further. So I don't think it's over with the PSP yet. What I would like to see more of is that Vita would be further developed.

You, and others, seem to be misunderstanding me..
What I'm asking about is NOT about emulation OF the PSP on something else, but emulators FOR the physical PSP itself..

Okay, I thought it was about PSP emulators. I don't know that, I guess that might be the end of that sort of thing, who knows.
