Today marks the 40th anniversary to our favorite British video game developer before the evil Microsoft destroyed them.

this narrative always triggers the fucc out of me; trying to shift all the blame to Microsoft when Rare themselves were leaving before the acquisitions and were struggling to keep up.

Well when Microsoft ruined Bethesda and Obsidian, we gotta think Microsoft ruins the whole industry even if they didn't get legal ownership of a company because just being in the same industry with Microsoft is enough!!! lolol

im gonna say it, i dont care about rare. i think the last game i gave a hoot was Viva Pinata and even then i always thought this company shot out medicore or okay games at best.

And Square-Enix ruined Platinum Games and Sony ruined Psygnosis, we could play this dumb game all day.
Yes we can because they keep ruining industry making us cannot play decent video games so we play this dumb game instead!!! lolol

The company that at one point was swallowing the world of gaming whole. Whatever it was, them flying to close too the Sun, or outside influences, we can't deny that companies like them are rare (heh) to come by in the current gaming landscape. I miss the times of seemingly endless progress that came with each of their new projects, at least a game of DK64 can last long enough to forget this feeling a while lol

They made Star Fox Adventures, which automatically puts them on my hate list.
C'mon man, it's a good game. The problem was that RARE was in rush due Microsoft deal.

No, it isn't. It's a poor man's Ocarina of Time, but without everything that made that game good.

Why did you compare SFA with Ocarina of Time? I love both, each one had their own beauty.

Ah yes because Microsoft has such a great history with their acquisitions. I mean sure they weren't in their best years, but most people left AFTER the acquisition and any parent company with a brain could have put then back on track.

Because SFA clearly rips off Ocarina of Time.
I get that Star Fox Adventures isn't a masterpiece, but calling it a rip-off feels a bit unfair. Almost every adventure game since Ocarina of Time had something from it — just look at ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, Demon's Souls, Kameo (also by Rare), Beyond Good & Evil, even Kingsley's Adventure on PS1 or Horizon Zero Dawn and Pseudoregalia more recently. They share something and that’s not bad.

I noticed you're into Mega Man (which is cool btw). Would games like 20XX, Flinthook, Rex Rocket, or Azure Striker Gunvolt be less valuable because they had something from MM?

Even when a game copy something, it can still do it's own thing and that's the reason i explore game genres and keep playing.

Don't put those games in the same category as SFA. For one thing, they all have their own unique identities, and they don't leech off of an already established franchise just because the devs wanted to make as much money as possible before fucking off into the sunset with Microsoft.

I just find it very... fitting that Rare's efforts both advanced videogaming at a time when most people were struggling to get the most out of their machines and pushed emulation back years through the use of advanced code and extra chips that were very hard to crack and that were designed specifically so bootleg copies and ROMs couldn't "communicate" with emulators or consoles, giving you heavy, expensive bricks.

No wonder Microsoft had their eyes on the company ;D!
