Happy 20th Birthday to the game that killed the Sonic franchise….

I dunno if it killed sonic but it's definitely the game that killed my interest in sonic. It looked really dumb at the time it came out and still looks dumb. The only new sonic game I've played since Shadow the Hedgehog came out is Sonic Mania.

shadow 05 was really edgy and corny but honestly looking back it has so much 2000's angst that its hard not to love at least a little bit. its such a product of its time.

Firstly, a moment of silence for Gamma style gameplay in the Sonic games... RIP taken from us too soon - that final gamma boss fight was pretty rad.
Which baffles me how it deteriorated games after games. Tails' mech levels were obviously an afterthought (since SA2's development was shaky). Eggman's levels were mostly fine (especially Cosmic Wall) but the gameplay was clunky (yes, it was meant to feel like that since those are mechs) but Gamma had the perfect floatiness and movements were more natural.

Too bad Gamma's levels were extremely short and that most of the e-100 series bosses (except E-105 Zeta since it was a giant pod in the middle of a room) were too easy and required you to spam the shooting since you could destroy their projectiles. Hot Shelter was the only actually challenging level with a tight timer to follow so you had to do proper combos for it.

Bless SRB2's Gamma mod which is very authentic and almost feel like it fits in the base game.

You should've checked Sonic Generations.

Then again when I played Generations in around 2013 (on my sh*tty laptop) my latest Sonic game I've played (but sadly didn't finish because I couldn't get the last Chaos Emerald) was Sonic Rush on the DS.

I think that most 7th gen games didn't age well because of that edge...

Then again I don't know what's worse between this and the 2010's self-aware/meta humour that plagued everything with "Marvel Dialogues" and "Subversion of Expectations".

Damn I'm glad Nintendo didn't follow that trend with their games (well, Twilight Princess exists but still).

Blessed statements. Having to play as Tails, Eggman, (and Knuckles, and Rouge imo) was game-padding garbage and it just doesn't feel nice. Having 1 more Sonic and Shadow level each would have been far more preferrable. Maybe I'm overselling it, but I think I could play a full game as Gamma, especially if it had more boss variety and stricter levels

But on the Resident Evil stuff. Maybe this is just me, but RE7 didn't "return to form", it copied Outlast. It's a good game with it's own qualities that set it aside from outlast, but it is neither an expansion, nor a reinvention of Resident Evil - it's Outlast with some gun play
Um.... RE7 didn't copy Outlast. It copied and improved on Resident Evil Revelations. It's not "Outlast with Gunplay", it's a true blue ResE game and insisting it's an Outlast rip-off is ignorance of the franchise's history and how the formula evolves with the times.

But you know what, this thread is already a warzone, so let's leave it at this.

The worst part is that now, from the late 2010s to today, obnoxious edginess and millennial writing tend to go and be combined hand-in-hand, as they're usually enacted by people who don't get why things like "edgy platformers" and "Marvel humour" worked in the first place and just do it because they think it would be cool.

This game is extremely funny so I like it. There are at least five or so major 3D sonic titles that are worse than this (including both games on either side of this one) so I don't see a reason to split hairs. Like whoa Sonic Team is incompetent?? Could have fooled me.

I don't know about "killed it"....

But it certainly didn't help the franchise any. Shadow the Hedgehog was, as I see it, an attempt at expanding the Sonic games into a new direction. It failed horribly at it. Because, let's be honest, in the universe of Sonic, Sonic is the coolest character, and he doesn't care.

Shadow tried to out cool Sonic and well, it backfired. I would say that the horrible Sonic Unleashed, you know, the one where he turns into a Werehog, killed the franchise.

Even by video game logic, and well, Sonic's logic for that matter, that's an outright dumb idea.
I remember renting Shadow from the local video store back in the prominent PS2 days.
I rented it on a Friday because where I am, you could rent games on a Friday for $5 and keep them until Monday.

I took it back the same day because I disliked it so much.
Killed the Sonic franchise? No.
Slipped it the Arsenic? Most definitely.

i'm sorry but the worse sonic game has to go to sonic unleashed. because of that little flying fuck furry named CHIP. he's the NAVI of Zelda OOT. just talks about any food with CHIPS in it. also the doctor you save talks about Pickles all the fucking time what is this SONIC THE FOODHOG? also i gave up on the game finding out you have to 100% it to unlock the final stage. also sonic games that make you get all the chaso emraldes just to unlock the final stages suck ass. also i like the werehog stages at least.

Would much rather play Shadow the Hedgehog than Sonic Heroes. They're both buggy trash, but at least Shadow is funny.

You know whats funny? When i was a kid I loved this game.
Same here. Maybe my opinion might change if I ever play it again, but it occupies that same mental space as Crash Bash for me; a game that the internet rags on that I don't remember having any sort of problem with.

"Where's that DAMNED 4th Chaos Emerald!?"
There's a good reason why "Or maybe it weren't a banan'r. I-It could be- ONE OF NATURE'S MYSTERIES!!!!!" works and why the above didn't and became mocked via internet memes.
