I unironically prefer the ending in this one compared to where I read to in the manga.

It just felt far more logical and in-character having L make the gamble to save himself with the Death Note despite the consequences, and Ryuk giving Light the preverbial middle finger for being such an arrogant asshole.

I would recommend the first two if you like Death Note. Especially if you stopped caring after the "first" major arc. You know what I mean.

There is L: Change the World as well, but I don't really remember anything about it. Must've made virtually no impact on me.

Nah. I watched those three way back when and kind of tapped out of Death Note around the same time. For me, the entire thing had ran its course after those and reading the manga until somewhere around Near and Mellow being in it. Never saw the anime and had no real interest in it.
