The game works till the memory card loading screen, then gets stuck there.

I played San Andreas until last week with no problems. It's the first time I have this kind of issue.

Yeah like that guy said
Also if that doesn't work, you should try search what kind of problems are you having since there's a lot of PCSX2 updates and related content

What version of PCSX2 are you using? Cause some people are stuck on the years old 1.6 version. You should go download it again if this is the case. It has improved much since.

The latest, the problem was that the game couldn't load an two years old save file. Creating a new one, I was able to start the game.

Is there any particular reason to play the emulated version over the native PC port?

No objective reason to, but in my opinion, all the GTA titles look way more beautiful on PS2 compared to PC. They also just feel more authentic. PC port feels like an afterthought and can be janky in many ways depending on many things like hardware differences. To be fair, PS2 version also has its fair share of problems, but to me it's the definitive classic.

I certainly do agree that at least some GTA titles looked better on the PS2 like San Andreas which had entirely different lighting and atmosphere on PS2.

Iirc the PC ports aren't based on the PS2 originals but the OG Xbox versions. I seem to recall a very in-depth article I read ages ago on the graphical issues that crept into the Xbox versions and were subsequently ported to the PC. It's been ages so please don't quote me on that. If there's any proof of this it might be in TCRF writeups at this point.

With that said GTAIII and VC got reverse engineered and I've been playing those versions on my PC in recent years. Sadly Rockstar DMCA'd the team before they could give us the definitive version of San Andreas. Pun very much intended considering how slipshod the Definitive Trilogy turned out to be. What a sham that was.
