There are GTA threads but these are per era, this is a general one.
Well, we talk about the pretty popular and polemical franchise, i played most games and i found them pretty fun (but HD ones are somewhat tedious for me except CW)

I only like the "Vice City" lineage, but I found them all to be timeless and endlessly enjoyable (even the unfinished Ouya port!).

Haven't played very much GTA, but it's one of those rare series where most of the games are very good. Most of my playtime has gone into Vice City and San Andreas, but I've played 1, 2, and 5 a good bit too. That said, the original 2 aren't really comparable to the 3D entries, lol.

It's funny, I've been playing through Vice City the past couple of weeks and I think that I prefer it over San Andreas, BUT San Andreas has more polish and is easier to play today. That said, I'll have to actually load up San Andreas since it's been a few years, to compare side by side. I just really like the 80s vibe of Vice City, and that the world is compact but meaningful. If Vice City had the polish of San Andreas, it would be looked upon much more fondly than it already is.

Hot take, but things like GTA5 don't hit the same for me because the world is just SO BIG. Something like Vice City, you really learn the world in just a few hours, but in GTA5 it just felt extremely overwhelming.

All that said, I need to try the other mainline GTA games, plus VCS and LBS, and whatever else I'm forgetting.

Try Chinatown Wars too.

San Andreas was a one-time hit thing, one that they've yet to replicate.
I like V, despite all its shortcomings. People like to shit on it because "erm, IV was grittier and more realistic" but forget that IV was very lacking in the fun department.

IV had a better story than its successor, but the average mission could be broken down into "go into point A, shoot fool B, flee to point C, end mission".

I never finished III or Vice City because the combat fucking sucks in those games.

III, VC and IV were my favorites. III merely because it was so innovative and new at the time. LCS/VCS were very impressive handheld games at the time. Chinatown Wars, while not as impressive graphically, is one of my favorites, too. I think IV is still the most immersive in the franchise. It wasn't perfect, however, as the combat/movement could feel slow to respond and clunky.

That's also all the missions in V.
