GTA is overrated

While it may have been true in the 2000's about it I think that in 2025 the paradigm has changed quite significantly and the term GTA Clone has died out for a good reason.

And my issue is that people are praising it for the visuals more than the actual gameplay (since there's barely any as it's an early stage).

It being made with in-engine cutscenes rather than pre-rendered could be surprising but it's not as complex as before (and they're not far from in-game scripts).

True but I don't understand why one gets Scott Free while the other is being spat on for the same thing.

It's the same as Ubisoft for the same Open World model when it's fine for others to do the same.
Its the quality , starfield suffered from long loading screens and boring gameplay at least that's what I heard and writing being so bad.

GTA on the other hand ensures well polished products meaning the game mechanics are quite surface level but them being well polished ensures the gameplay to be good and most importantly smooth that's what sets GTA apart always groundbreaking in things like graphics and gameplay everyone lost their minds when 5 came out the 3 character dynamic and the mission design around it , the crazy physics of 4 , the introduction of RPG mechanics in san andreas making gameplay even deeper than VC and 3 GTA again and again was innovative and stood the test of time as a franchise.

I loved playing GTA franchise when I was a kid, but after playing some of the old games as an adult I realized they didn't age well

Walking around a long map and killing random NPC's was a big part of the fun, but it just seems a pointless thing now and the main story missions are boring

Not only most of them are insanely easy — there must be 1 or 2 challenging missions in every game — but they're also repetitive and follow a formula that gets over-saturated at a certain point of the gameplay (e.g. — "drive to point X," "kill Y character," etc.)

Not to mention the story and the characters are "whatever". I just lost my interest in the franchise so I have never played the new games when I got the chance which was only recently, don't know if they fixed my problems with it but the point here are the old ones
From what I remember GTA was the first introduction into open world for me. I think that was its main selling point. Yes other than that, it didn't age well. I think it stands up for just cruising around the map, taking in the city.

Honestly, as polished as it could be, if it's still the same thing we got for two decades I think it'll be not the best game design wise.

I want novelty, not small gimmicks.

I liked Vice City a lot, but I could never get into San Andreas. I think GTA suffers from having a lot of missions that are just boring and don't take advantage of the sandbox element.

Also I think Saints Row 2 clears :D

Yes, old games can become outdated as time goes on when it doesn't age well. And you only played the older games, and your conclusion is that the series is overrated just from that, without playing the newer ones, nor the upcoming VI. That's like me playing only the NES Mario 1 and 2, and just sum up the whole series is overrated. Yes, I know it's the popular, contrarian thing to hate anything that's well liked by the masses, so here's your attention.
SMB 3 is still the best Mario. Mario on the NES has aged well. Just because game is old doesn't mean its aged poorly. And technically there havent really been any newer GTA games. GTA V cant really be considered new anymore. Also a lot of people still consider San Andreas to be the series peak.

Who said its the same thing? VC introduced bikes and wider varsity of planes and crouch and more , SA had the RPG mechanics the guns having recoil the gang recruiting mechanic , 4 well idk , 5 builds on SA foundation's and has the 3 protagonist thing going for it each installment improved upon the previous work and 6 im sure will be the best GTA ever.

In all fairness, I think V is the most boring one.
At least 4 had new graphics and physics (even if I think it was a bit boring), but 5 didn't impress me the slightlest. (No, I don't care about GTA Online). It wasn't a bad game, but not that innovative either imo. The 3 character gimmick is whatever.
I even forgot VI was announced. In all honestly I don't think I care enough for buying another rockstar game after I got V (on ps3)
If anything, the missions became more on railways/restrictive in what you can do to complete them, and that's lame. That only got more prevalent with each iteration of the serie

First time I hear someone saying 5 is boring I heard criticism of its story and franklin being crappy character with not much to add to the story but boring? Hmmm looking back at it in 2013 it was great and honestly it holds up very well the AI is good enough and can actually shoot especially the LSPD compared to their san andreas iteration being crippled in shooting department :loldog

It has good detail and generally the best GTA ever was I don't get the criticism of missions I personally find them good and engaging enough with all the action and dialogues to keep me hooked.

I guess I just wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. Maybe boring isn't the right word tho, it still had cool moments afterall.
I do think it still is a good game, but I always preferred and enjoyed the older games more, even when I came back playing them after V.

I think its fine if you find it boring maybe its not your cup of tea and that's entirely ok , I still hear people say gta SA is the best GTA ever so you aren't alone in that regard of preferring the older titles.

I had the same thought as you in a post I made on another thread, GTA V is most definitely overrated and is not really impressive for the era it was launched, unlike every other GTA game.

I agree that the games on the old engine up to San Andreas have aged terribly on a mission design basis but it can’t be overstated just how important the franchise is to gaming as a whole. To me the series has probably run its course and V would have been a good swan-song but comparing it to the games that tried to copy gta‘s formula none of them quite have the same je ne sais quoi.

I think we’re generally suffering from over-exposure when it comes to sandbox games so gta doesn’t seem as unique or as fun as it used to.

Indeed indeed, you can tell GTA games marked a standard for sandbox on the 2d era and up to GTA IV, and in my opinion, GTA V only served as a standard for its Online, which drove more companies to try and have the same success with Online and microtransactions. I hope I'm explaining myself well, English isn't my first language lmao.

I loved GTA3, Vice City and IV. I'm one of the few people who didn't really care for San Andreas and V. LCS and VCS were fun and really impressive on the PSP back in the day. They were less impressive, however, when ported to the PS2.

Personally, I like the way GTA has evolved over the years. I liked everyone that I played. How can you not love Trevor from GTA 5?
