Great games, generic names

Shadow of Destiny may as well be a poster child for this. It’s the most unique game I’ve played in my life, being a time traveling supernatural horror murder mystery puzzle open world game, but it was cursed by a name that google keeps confusing for the other destiny. A shame.

In Europe it was titled Shadow of Memories instead. Marginally better in my mind, since destiny is just such an overused term in gaming - also easier to google - but not exactly ideal either.
That game has so much charm to it. I never really got far into it, but I never forgot it either.

Princess Maker.
I mean from the title alone, you'd think it's a game made for little girls. Probably something akin to one of those terrible Elsa foot-fetish mobile games.

But no. If anything, it's a pet-raising-sim for wannabe dads.
I'd say it's more targeted towards men than it is women. But you'd never know that from the title.
They're also all really great games as well.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising

It’s a sort of passion project the AC Odyssey team made that went under the radar for a lot of people, I didn’t play it myself until it popped up on Gamepass. Definitely not great, but way better than bad.
It’s a fairly standard action adventure platformer kinda game set in the world of Greek gods, clearly inspired by BotW but it’s got a ton of personality. The writing and attitude reminds me a lot of PS2-era games with its snark and humor, it was refreshing to play a game that didn’t take itself too seriously. The gods are sort of based on spoiled celebrities which is weirdly fitting for the Greek pantheon.

Absolutely dogshit title though, it tells you literally zero about the game (Fenyx is the name of the protagonist).

One of them at least. Still really curious about Kenzan. I hear pretty mixed things, but still.
pretty sure they finished a fan translation recently.

edit: nah, they did post last month that they are close to the finish line tho

I don't agree with the title being generic, but I do agree that it gives the wrong impression. Reading the title alone, I too though it was a girly game much like tose shovel ware games based on girly IPs like Barbie and the Olsen Twins. I turns out it was a pet sim, but instead of a pet is a girl. And even with kinky elements in it, some of them more subtle, others more overt.

Garry's Mod.
Sounds like basic indie unity-based platformer if you think about it.

You may call it Jeff's Mod and people still wouldn't know any better.

Lot of people in this thread think generic means bad. Nonsense Japanese titles like "Infinite Undiscovery" are anything but generic. A generic product is when you get the store brand' blander version of Cheerios and they just call them "ring cereals" or "Honey Nut O's". It's as plain and and straightforward as it gets. A RPG called "Knight Quest", that's generic. If it's all words that appear in a million titles, like "Legend of Destiny" or something, generic.

I would argue "Persona" is not a generic title at all either because it's not a term that was commonly used at the time in every day speech (probably still isn't, even though everyone's a wannabe psychotherapist now), let alone in video games. It's enigmatic.

"Dungeon Explorer" is super generic. Good Gauntlet RPG on the Turbografx-16 by Atlus.

This thread has made me re-realize that most video game titles are just a combination of words that sound vaguely cool, cute, or fitting for the game.

My perception of the English language is now even more ruined than it already was. Thanks RGT! 👍

Well, what else should they be? Uncool and unfitting? Are they supposed to make a fantasy RPG and call it Whippersnapper Bowling?

Crystal Project: sounds like some kind of generic mobile phone puzzle game, is actually a cool non-linear jrpg with some neat metroidvania style progression mechanics, annoying platforming and a great FFV style job system.

Forsaken: I had no idea what this game was for years. It had all these trippy edgy commercials and magazine advertisements that didn't explain a single thing about the game or show even a single screenshot. It's actually a 3d space shooter like Descent which also has a pretty generic name I guess.

Elite: in the vein of space sims. Also a very generic and nondescript name. Is in fact one of the first 3d open universe space sims.

King's Quest always stood out as a pretty generic name to me as well. Same with Quest 64.

Sometimes they are very much one or the other, or both. S.C.A.T is unfitting, Final Mission (same game, in Japan) is generic.

It’s hard to call gmod a game at this point, it transcended that status two decades ago.

Castlevania, but not the title, but its subtitles. Like, there are

Symphony of the night
Harmony of dissonance
Aria of sorrow
Lament of innocence
Curse of darkness
Circle of the moon
Dawn of sorrow
And so on...

Castlevania: something of something

Street Fighter
Virtual Fighter
Magic Sword
Ghosts & Goblins
Plasma Sword

Okay ... when i think about capcom , they had alot of really on point but generic names for their awesome franchises .
SNK had some really unimaginative ones too on the NEO GEO /MVS but Capcom had the definitly quantity of generic names .

But it had nuance with a nice context behind that is hard to replicate somehow with fangames , imo .

Maybe basic but it sticks out from game to game .
