Yeap another jidaigeki film directed by Hideo Gosha, Magobei Wakizaka is a samurai for the Sabai clan. A nearby island, Sado, boasts a rich gold mine which provides plentiful riches for the Tokugawa clan.

When one of the gold ships sinks, the local fishermen recover some of the gold, intending to return it to the Tokugawa clan. However, Magobei's clan master, Rokugo Tatewaki, takes the gold and slaughters the fishermen so they cannot report the gold stolen.

Magobei is appalled. He promises not to report Rokugo to the shogunate in exchange for Rokugo's promise to never do so again. However, three years later, assassins sent by Rokugo's retainer, Kunai, come for Magobei, who is living in Edo. He realizes that Rokugo intends to steal more gold and slaughter more innocents.

Goyokin was the first Japanese production shot in Panavision. Initially, Toshiro Mifune was cast in Kinnosuke Nakamura's role, but was replaced several weeks into filming.

Man you really love this samurai stuff! Even the cover art alone looks insane, the plot seems pretty interesting too

Thanks for another recommendation!

I was thinking of making a Topic Thread about Certain Film Stuff, but I say that the Post you do should be Archived here in one thing somehow. They are an Imperative Act pertaining to Reviews, Showcase, Inspiration and Exposure. Maybe a Thread to hold all your Past and Present posts... Here are some other Films from Weird to Action. Along with some Twitter Accounts that where going to be shared in the Topic. It ain't all because I didn't finish putting things together. Maybe this can help y'all somehow.

lol. goddamit! you too? this also one of my favorite samurai movies. i really like hideo gosha samurai movies.

I adore Mifune but dare I say I find Nakadai to be a more versatile actor and the better choice for this role by far.

Gosha still gets overlooked a bit when it comes to quality jidaigeki. I feel with Goyokin there was a lot of synergy going own with the more bleak Italian westerns of the time, especially the great silence, albeit it’s not quite that bleak. It’s interesting to see that inspiration return to Japan a couple of years after Yojimbo originally inspired Italian filmmakers.
