This was following off of another post i made regarding fan service being the only thing to draw a consumer in, and then potential resulting in disappointment. Such games will be increasing to dominate in shear volume of availability with AI generated content ramping up, potentially flooding the market. So i think we need to set a standard for the games we totally buy for the story...>_>;;

I will get the ball rolling with:
Nier Automata
iu

Very high quality story, awesome game play, replay ability.

Onechanbara
iu

Millage may very, but ok game play, not much in terms of repeatability and while a guilty pleasure, i would not play this unless i got it on sale, and if there was nothing else available. This is a fine example imo, of a game that lets it's "plot" sell it over anything else of substance, and heck i will buy it, jut not at a premium..

Ah yea nier automota , that one game made by square these guys who keep making RPGs that are really good my friend wanted to play nier
Cough, released by square, made by platinum games, cough.. ^^;;
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nier:_Automata

But yeah, square do make grate RPGs, they got platinum involved because they where better at making fighters, since most where ex Capcom workers.

I enjoyed the Senran Kagura games quite a lot back in the day. They got better with every new game until the made a "meh" remake of the first one and then only weird spin-offs and crossovers. I really wonder why they never continued making new "real" instalments. They still sell Senran Kagura merchandise so there has to be some demand at least.

Probably becouse they thought that the name alone and the "plot" content would be enough to carry it. This is the problem with a lot of companies now a days, they want to invest 0 and get all the profit from their products. And it is making for a worse industry as a result imho.

onechanbara, if i remember correctly, is part of the simple 2000 series; a set of budget games released for people to get a game on a tight budget. earth defense force is another title from that set, again if i am remembering things correctly.
the games are meant to be a cheap way to have some fun for a couple of hours on your day off from work or school. i think onechanbara was somewhat popular since it got a live action movie.
while most developers should aim to make high quality games, there's nothing wrong with a game having a short story, some mildly good gameplay and graphics. if nothing else, you'll appreciate the good and great games more after the experience.

i stand by my opinion dead or alive xtreme beach volleyball on the original xbox was a good game
filled with fanservice, but booting up the game to the ambience of an island beach, coupled with the then stunning graphics and christina aguilera of all things playing
going to the casino, gambling all my money away, restarting my game, what a good time

Yeah, i think there was or is a Senran Kagura mobile gacha game... maybe that was enough to make them money :/

Absolutely, if they stayed cheap though. I think i saw one Onechanbara in 2016? release go for 60 bucks on release week, and then tanked in price after a month.

Don' forget that on the original Xbox, you could change the music, when i was playing this i was listening to "fair exchange" nitty mix by tu puc, and it was glorious!

i'm not surprised by that. there's not enough content in any of those games to warrant $60 bucks. the highest that they could go is $30, and that's mainly for the outfit customization options and the dead or alive game engine physics in the later games.

It's actually nier autometa.
o7 Changes my captain o Captain! What waaaah, but the pic says Automata, hmm Automoooota? I wonder if the charectors can all dress like cows! ::thinking >_> i would pay for that DLC.... For research purposes only >_> ;;

Oh god! With Automoooota, i am now seeing Auto muta muta muta muta muta muta

F this ADHDi suffer! 😭

As a huge action game fan I'll always defend the Onechanbara series with my life. It's just one of those games that offer as much depth as the time you put into them!
Already by Zombie Hunters 2 the games already give you a silly amount of tools to mess around with (character specific moves & tag team shenanigans) on top of the already satisfying hit-timings & sword maintenance.
Onechanbara Z: Kagura offers as much depth as DMC3/4, & I'm not even exaggerating here ::fire

The Senran Kagura series is by far the best example of plot over substance lol. I'm just doing some friendly debate that's all.

But in terms of reply ability, you have to get invested no? This is why i used Neir Aotomaaaatowa, as an example. It is a very good example of more put in to a title beyond the surface level.

Re Onecharbara:
Fan service, tick.
Good game play, tick,
ok how can the game play develope? Boss rush, etc.

What about the story? And How does it all fit in, etc. With he biggest factor being the price. You can consider me an old snake clutching my pears, but i would always be picky when it comes to spending coin, and i want as much as i can get out of what i spend on a game, imho.

I will have to check out Onechanbara Z: Kagura properly to see if i can do a proper comparison to DMC3/4 in terms of content and play mechanics.

Not saying Onechanbara is in the same tier as Nier Automatoes (lol @ all of you guys), but they should definitely be part of the same group. Both are "beyond the surface level" games for sure!

Considering the OCBaras were built from the ground up by a team of less than 10 people, & nails the stuff you want from an action game, I'd say they did a pretty darn good job haha. It's got checklist type stuff for replayability, the unlockables, heck, some of them even have training modes!

Idk, I've put a great amount of time into these games not because I was forcing myself, because I was actually having fun & experimenting with stuff. That's substance right?

also sony and nintendo have massively begun demanding more censorship on japanese anime games (not stuff like the last of us 2 or witcher 3 for some reason).. microsoft never really got any of those games and even when they do they demand more censorship (see the recent Steam Hearts/ Advanced VG Saturn Tribute for a recent example)... its funny because microsoft was big on the DOA series back in the day...
