What’s up, guys! First thread here, so… ::sonic-waiting
I played Dragon Quest V about two years ago and really enjoyed it (didn’t finish it though 😅). Soooo today I’m starting my own QUEST, and I’m gonna try to finish as many games as I can—maybe in order… or maybe not :P

I already downloaded the NES ROM from the first one and tested it, so I’m about to try it for real now. And wow… looks old? XD

I know there’s a remake on Steam and… just LOOK at the price of it

So yeah, here I am posting about it. I’ll gladly accept tips from any veterans or anyone who wants to help, or I dunno… just make fun of me or leave a comment 😄
Thanks for the attention!

there's SNES and GBC versions for Erdrick trilogy if you can't stand NES versions, DQ I and II are games that depends so much about grinding, if you want play them with less grinding, there's 2x Money and Exp patches(at least for SNES versions, I don't know if there's for NES and GBC versions too)

DQ III in other hand, it's a game that has much customization so... you can play it in the way that you want

DQ IV is also a good starting point

DQ 1-3 I'd vote for the SFC versions.
DQ 4-6 are best if you can emulate the DS versions.
DQ 7 I'd say play the 3DS version

Controversial Opinion, but the short answer is: Don't.

Dragon Quest was at once the quintessential RPG franchise in Japan, but has been so far outstripped by almost every RPG ever made since that it's almost frustrating how belligerently archaic the series has been.

However, they will always continue to sucker us in with Toriyama's iconic artstyle and their quirky bri'ish sayings, making the appeal obvious (though, I prefer to enjoy the series through its spinoffs like Sword, Heroes, and especially Monsters, the main series is just far to rigid for my taste).

The long answer is: Probably 8, or any of the modern HD remakes like I&IIHD, the DS/PS1/IOS remakes, any of the ones with the added spectacle of animation or smooth QOL improvements.

I know your apprehensive about the I&IIHD because of the price, but we have a borderline piracy Repo attatched to the site, I don't think we really need to be so skittish about Torrents or RePacks (especially if you genuinely want to purchase and just want to try it to see if it's worth it).

Also, IF we need to be skittish about Torrents and RePacks around here, please yell at me to stop so I don't go shotting my mouth off and getting anybody in trouble.

I've only played and finished DQVIII and XI but both are awesome games in my opinion.

My plan is to start the first trilogy of the saga with the new remakes but following the cronological order of the story (3>1>2), not the release order.

Dragon Quest 3 was a prequel story, so in terms of chronology, the titles are ordered 3 → 1 → 2. Square Enix’s upcoming HD-2D remake trilogy takes this into account, as the remake of Dragon Quest 3 is set to launch first, in November this year, while Dragon Quest 1 and 2 will follow in 2025.

Thx for the recommendations!! :D I’ll definitely keep them in mind.
But maybe I’m just crazy, because part of me is thinking about playing ALL the Dragon Quest games.
“Why?” you might ask. I honestly don’t know—I just think it would be cool (I’ll probably never actually do it because im a noob, lol).
Still, it’d be nice to follow the evolution of the franchise, kind of like what I did with Pokémon when I “recently” (by which I mean… 3 years ago ;-;) played everything from Red up to X & Y.

Recommendations accepted, already added them to my list XD

By the way, if you have any recommendations for websites or places to “save” or keep track of games I’ve played, finished, or plan to play, I’d really appreciate it. I’m currently using HowLongToBeat, but I’m still learning how to use it properly.

Once again, thanks for the recommendations, my brother :D

Have fun! And take your time to buy the best items before moving to the next town. The game is rather short so don't rush it.

Really appreciate your suggestion, dude — gonna try all of these too.

But like I replied to the other guy (or girl, I dunno), I kinda want to try and see the evolution of the franchise XD mostly because I’m stubborn. I know there’s a big chance I’ll end up thinking something like “wow, this is really old, the gameplay feels dated” — and yeah, I 100% agree with that.

I’ve played Dragon Quest V before and even that already felt a bit strange gameplay-wise, while the PS2 version still enchants me to this day.

So yeah, sorry if my typing isn’t the most decent to properly explain or argue about this ::sadkirby

And about downloading the games from pirate sites… yeah, I’d totally do that XD I mentioned the Steam prices mostly as a meme more than anything else.

Anyway, I’ll try to play ALL of them — and if I can’t handle it, I’ll probably just follow the community’s recommendations. So yeah… let’s go with stubbornness.

I would begin here.

In 2023 I bought a PS2 with OPL and played it and… dude, GREAT GAME.
(It’s kinda ironic to say that since I didn’t even get past the beginning.)
I played up to the part where we reach the ship and fight a giant octopus, and honestly, I really liked everything I experienced so far.
And the art by uncle Akira Toriyama… that was the real charm!!

Wow, I didn’t know that at all… now I’m not sure if I should play them in chronological order or not XD

But I’ve heard in some videos that the games themselves don’t really follow a strict timeline (I mean the ones after DQ3, right?).
If I’m not mistaken, some of them take place on the same land/world, but not in the same time period.

Because of that, playing DQ V before the first three supposedly wouldn’t really change the experience that much…

God, I really need to play these games :,v

That’s a hell of a tip XD
That’s exactly why I died so hard when I played DQ V and then tested the first DQ ::surprised-pikachu

Start with the Wii game, Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and Tower of Mirrors, then going to Dragon Quest 1 won't feel as bad... Might as well get the worst out of the way first.

And don't forget about Dragon Quest Builders 1 & 2, those were a very nice little break for grindy RPGs.

Okien dokie my friend! Probably gonna try them all :D::eggmanlaugh

I kinda like the remasters and they bring quality of life improvement for beginners such as map indicators or " easy mode " where you can just focus on the story and can't die ( good for an unkillable boss )

and the 2d - HD works for me too.

if you want to try it, start with Dragon quest 3 remaster though, it's considered the first game in the series story wise and bring a whole group and multiple classes ( can even respec as you want )

DAMN, THIS LOOKS AMAZING… sorry, I lost my composure ::sailor-embarrassed

I like to think of myself as a HARDCORE GAMER (or not — I die a lot in RPGs). I’ll probably play this one at some point… but first I want to play the earlier versions. When I finally get to this, I know I’ll have that moment like: “HOW THE HELL DID THIS TURN INTO THAT?”::surprised-pikachu
