it would be nice because the performance of the SMS version looks like an MS-DOS game than anything else.

The Master System's video chip can't handle sprites of that size so the devs used background tiles to simulate bigger sprites (it's also why there is very little flickering). But it has a very severe impact on performance. The only way to optimize it would be to replace those big "sprites" with smaller ones that are compatible with the console's sprite hardware accelerator.
