got a wii u for like $80, hoping to use it as a party gaming console, or just a console to play chill games on
what would you download on such a console?

I understand that it can access gamecube games as well, on top of wii and wii u.

I'm definitely getting:
  • sonic adventures 2
  • prince of persia
  • shadow the hedgehog

The homebrew community did quite a lot of great ports, like Shovel Knight for example. And maybe you can try Rayman Legends too

Get the Gamecube emulator Nintendont and get most of the Gamecube classics. I'd recommend Eternal Darkness, I know it's not chill but it's an incredible survival horror exclusive that's still trapped on the system. For something chill and fun though, I'd recommend classic Harvest Moon Another Wonderful Life and Chibi-Robo.

Xenoblade Chronicles X

Pikmin 3, DK: Tropical Freeze, Captain Toad and Yoshi's Woolly World are very chill and for your party needs you got Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, Mario Party 10, Mario Tennis and Mario 3D World.

Definitely games that haven't been ported to Switch like Devil's Third, Kirby & the Rainbow Curse, Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD, Yoshi's Woolly World, Paper Mario: Color Splash, NES Remix Pack, Nintendo Land, Star Fox Zero, etc.

Just prepare for the Star Fox Zero controls to not be very good. Worth playing, though, if you're a fan of Star Fox and/or Platinum Games.

Definitely recommend Monster Hunter 3U, definitely my favorite game on the console. I sunk countless hours into it, just mindlessly hunting away at whatever monster I felt up to at the time. Tons of fun.

For Gamecube games, Lost Kingdoms I and II are must plays, imo. Pretty unique action RPGs with card based combat. Both games are pretty short, both clocking in under 10 hours each if you're just interested in going through the main story, but they're both fantastic. Kota Hoshino composed both games OSTs as well, absolutely worth it for the music alone.

You seem like a Sonic fan so I'll point out

It's a great time, on par with the best of the Kart racers out there and is more classic arcade Sega than Sonic-derivative (think Sonic Riders)

And Sonic Lost World

It's much better than peeps give it credit for. Very clearly inspired by the success of Mario Galaxy but in a good way.
Was honestly hoping this was gonna be the new direction for Sonic games... but alas...
Anyways, it's totally worth it

Wind Waker for sure.

Agreed. Are there means through which to continue playing this game without the official server? I really want to link up with peeps. Monster Hunter Wilds just isn't doing it for me rn

funny you say that I have a modded Wii U.
id say take advantage of the fact you can play game cube and Wii games from the game pad, it is almost like a Nintendo steam deck

I agree with many of the above suggestions (especially for the DS games!) but would add a few extra of my favorite game experiences via modded WiiU:
1. Skies of Arcadia (Gamecube)
2. Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga (GBA)
3. Paper Mario TTYD (N64 Fanhack/re-make in N64 style)
I really enjoyed all of these and would definitely recommend loading the console up to try lots of games from many different Nintendo generations.

If you're using it as a party system definitely get Nintendo Land.
Also, if you're modding your Wii U I'd also recommend to have a custom theme and get Aroma.
On top of that keep in mind that the Wii U has a bullshit limit of 300 games on the menu (folders or not).
