Give Me Your Weird Retro Games

The Haunting Starring Polterguy has always been a favorite. You play a dead teen haunting the mafia family who solid him the skateboard that killed him

this is awesome. it kinda has the same feeling maniac mension did specifically when putting the hamster in the microwave.

Hebereke. A Famicom metroidvania-lite. Its writing is exceedingly weird and nonchalant. Just a goofy game with great music that doesn’t take itself very seriously, during a time where doing that kind of thing WAS very weird.

Segagaga. An RPG for the Dreamcast about managing SEGA, released mere months before their exit from the console business. You’ll fight their characters from every era (both arcade and home console), rogue employees, and it even gives a canonical tragic backstory to Alex Kidd where he was replaced by Sonic the Hedgehog as SEGA’s mascot. He even gives some truly inspirational words on not giving up and moving forward.
Here is the moment, translated by SEGA officially.

(Evidence of this moment.)

Also this happens.

It’s a strange, inspirational, and very heartfelt game that feels like the ultimate swansong for SEGA as a hardware maker.
Also, five days ago, we got an update saying the English fan translation is in the home stretch of development, so here’s to us being able to play SEGAGAGA in the next year or so!

AKIBA-S-TRIP-UNDEAD-UNDRESSED-PS-VITA-PSVITA

Does Akiba's Trip Undead & Undressed qualify as a retro game already?

However, Jackie Chan Action Kung Fu definitely qualifies as a strange retro game. Because in this game, Jackie Chan not only fights the people who kidnapped his sister, but also, for some reason, kills frogs, birds and other animals with his kung fu.

Martial Masters.
Released by Chinese developer IGS in 1999, the game is what I would consider to be the secret third part of a trilogy of awesome playing fighters with gorgeous animation from 1999, alongside Third Strike and Garou: Mark of the Wolves.

The game is just a sick fighter with tropey but cool characters, the ability to summon a spirit of your fighter like an assist to lock your opponent down and force them into mixups, and a genuinely balanced game feel that is just awesome.

Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu are pretty wacky but definitely not underrated I think. For something underrated, I would say Planet Laika.

Also, Warzard/Red Earth.

A hybrid fighting game/action RPG that looks gobsmackingly gorgeous. It’s less of a super technical fighter, and instead is a game of slaying giant and detailed monsters as you progress through one of four character stories. You may say “this game isn’t obscure! It’s on all modern platforms in the Capcom Fighting Collection!”

Well, Martial Masters is in the “IGS Arcade Collection” for both Switch and PC. Being technically available doesn’t necessarily mean a game isn’t obscure.

EDIT:
I forgot to mention that this is the only Capcom fighter with true fatalities, which are properly violent. The game also has story moments where which option you pick will send you down a different path of gameplay.
Legitimately an awesome single player fighting game. Check it out if you have a CPS3 emulator!
