Let's be realist, not every gift we recieve can be a win, yup, most of them gives us joy, but mostly we end up with fibs, vent here and the anonymity of Internet shall not judge you

My dad is fine, but he tends to overstimateme, not under, OVER, my mom knows that i can handle myself, but at least she doesn't force me to play chess with people far leagues beyond me and have to pretend i let them win when i predictably lose, the gift came past year, it was one of those instant sunflowers that come packaged like Instant Ramen, he wanted me to blossom it so he could plant it in his garden as a sort of thing for me, but i didn't wanted it, not because i couldn't, but because botany is not my strenght, too slow and backburning for me (i admire the work of those who do it), my dad insisted i should at least try, fortunately my older brother DOES like planting plants, so i waited until my dad forgot he buyed the packet (He is kinda forgetful) and gave it to him in his birthday, the flower sadly was cheap, so it died, but at least it did in the hands of someone that knew what to do

Nothing too egregious, but I remember having a few extended family members who continued to give me things meant for a young child after I had well outgrown them. Stuff like a coloring book for Christmas to a teenager. It's the thought that counts, but I'd be lying if I said I was excited to receive them.

When i got my 4070ti i got a code for Diablo 4, i gave it to my older brother and even he didnt want it.
Don't either of you have phones?

There was this one time they gave me a laptop, which was a complete downgrade of what I already had at the time, and I told them as much after a quick check.

Ever since then, my family just agreed to just give me money so I get myself what I want.

I think my problem is trying to not get overexcited over receiving any gift. I get too hyper over it and had became kinda inconvenient to people because of this in the past. I try my best to not be overly emotional over things people do to me nowadays

Real talk, it's most gifts I get. People don't know me that well because I'm quiet and deliberately keep my hobbies away from them, and I always get things for myself if I want them. "Don't get me anything" or "just get me money" also don't work, meaning I need to constantly fake reactions. I truly want nothing, and people aren't able to accept that.

...I kinda hate December, for that reason.

Same.

I've thought about this for well over an hour now, and I'm still having a hard time thinking of something, because I'm always super grateful when I receive gifts, regardless of what they are.

I guess one example would be when my mom gave me a book of basically "Nordic folklore spirits". It was a pretty cringe read though, because the book portrayed itself as sort of factual and kind of serious, as if it wasn't folklore but real, and it simultaneously didn't claim to be a fantastical book so it read a lot like pseudoscience or whatever, which I always think is kind of embarrassing as I'm pretty into folklore and fairy-tales but not when it tries to claim it's real.
She later on admitted that she didn't think it was that kind of book, and that she thought it was an art book, as I already had one with that specific subject and apparently a sequel to that one had released, and she just messed up.

It's an extremely pretty book though, with fake leather and gilded letters on the spine, so it's nice to have in my bookshelf just for that.

...life, actually getting regular socks for Christmas like whoever thought that was a good idea deserves to be hung.
Man that's like one of my favorite gifts to get because I treat my socks like prisoners of war and I'm always too stingy to buy new ones until it's too late lol

the only things i ever get are socks/underwear or alcohol. i love it, i couldnt be more grateful.
the gift i regret being given was a minecraft shirt i got back in hs. i hated it, never wore it and gave it to one of my younger cousins recently. i did play minecraft but i wasnt enough of a turbovirgin to wear it in public plus it was that era when playing minecraft warranted bullying.

I had a great grandma that would get me Jesus stuff. Books, statues....

I probably would have kept them but my mom always threw a fit.

Oh I actually thought of another one!

At a big party where we celebrated a bunch of birthdays at the same time, some friends gave me a giant gummy cock as a joke gift, which I really didn't like.
I was going through alot in my head regarding my sexuality at the time, but they didn't know that, so I don't really hold it against them or anything, and they apologized like immediately when they saw I didn't approve.
It was very clearly a joke gift, it just misfired.

an ex gifted me a fancy watch (from walmart) when we were first dating to flex his money and i was so confused. it didnt even fit it was like draping a necklace around my string bean of a wrist

Socks kinda suck to buy, being overpriced, necessary for cold weather, and not even all that good for fashion. I think the issue is that so many adults forget that most kids don't have to suffer those issues, quite yet.

ohh also, my grandma is sort of a hoarder (great depression baby) and loves to raid thrift stores, would always gift me & my sisters the most random objects.
i told her i was into anime when i was 10 and i think her mind went "anime -> japan -> the entire continent of asia" and up until my adult years she would gift me anything from little buddha statues to chinese calligraphy sets, all caked in thrift store dust of course
it reached a point to where every time we would visit her she would send us home with giant plastic bags full of stuff, and as we left my mom would take these huge bags and quietly place them in her trash bin lmfaooo

When I was like five, my grandmother on my mom's side was like, "look, even if you give me a list, I don't know what any of this stuff is. Let's just go buy it, but you can't have it until [christmas/birthday/whatever]" and so we would do this. That part was fine. But then there would be other boxes and I'd know they were clothes, but they were always like clothing you'd only wear for picture day at school or something. Nowadays I'd love this and in hindsight I feel bad for not being more grateful, but at the time I'm thinking to myself, "a sweater vest? really?"
