This bootleg is also worth a play if you can find it.

There's a NES2PCE series of unofficial ports that all play great with no slowdown.

Yo that's really cool that someone made a physical copy. I was actually just looking at the NES2PCE set by chance and was about to try em out on the flashcart. This page has a list of PCE homebrew I was just looking at. Most of the links are dead but you can still find them if you look on archive or something.

I have managed to aquire the PCE copes of:
Castlevania
Contra
Duck Tales 2
Jackal
Mega Man
Mega Man 2
Ninja Gaiden
Robo Warrior
Super Mario Bros.

However, Mega Man 2 is the only one I have managed to find a physical copy of.

I found this yesterday while digging around. A Dragon Warrior NES port by the same guy that did all the rest. Apparently it was the first one he did but didn't release it publicly until somewhat recently. The list I posted earlier doesn't even have this on there. Link is in the description. Seems near perfect except for no saving.

the first posts on this thread have some amazing recs, I can personally vouch for Magical Chase, Rondo of Blood and the Valis series. You also have the first three Ys games if you are looking to get into falcom's history.

Also it's called the shmup console for a reason, try Soldier Blade, Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder in particular.

I also got into PC-Engine games bc of high score girl and I was surprised the kiddo actually had great taste in videogame consoles haha
Thank you

I love PC Engine games. I recently finished some Japanese RPGs like Tengai Makyou II, Fuun Kabukiden, and Gulliver Boy (which is a masterpiece). And the shmup library is very good too, and I'm still trying to finish Soldier Blade and Blazing Lazers, and the incredible port of Gradius II Gofer no Yabou. Among other games I've completed are Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, Bonk 3, Air Zonk, Super Air Zonk, Bomberman '93, Bomberman '94, Kabuki Ittou Ryoudan, Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Yuna and its sequel. Yeah, I still have several other games that I want to finish.

Went to the National Video Game Museum in Texas today. Check out how they had an entire exhibition just for the PC Engine! They even had a PC FX there, on the bottom shelf of the right display case.

it's not much but got this little gem here.

wow that's wonderfull !

Realized today that my Turbo EverDrive Pro firmware was a pretty outdated. They changed the naming scheme which is what threw me off. Fixed a bunch of timing issues with CD games that use redbook audio. Before I updated cutscenes in Rondo of Blood where slightly out of sync and Ys IV was way off.
Anyway, if you’re using one too, make sure your firmware is up to date. Current build as of now is 24.1217.

Hoping to post some more old magazine excerpts here. Here's one that tells the story on the release of Magical Chase. Palsoft went bankrupt shortly after the release of this game, causing the initial retail version in 1991 to be limited. PC Engine fan magazine would later do a mail-in version in July 1993.

The legendary cult shooter is back!
Magical Chase resale confirmed!!

Sold out within days of release, this legendary software vanished from the market, leaving behind a reputation as a "phantom masterpiece" is now back! In response to user demand, our editorial team has secured limited re-release available only through pre-order!!

Magical Chase is one of the best games on the system, and costs a fortune if you don't go for a reproduction.

does this one have many difference with the snes version ?
Do you mean Gulliver Boy? The SNES game is a completely different game and it's a action-RPG, while the PC Engine is a JRPG (and, the Sega Saturn one is basically a port of the PC Engine game.)

Yes, the SNES version was the last to come out.
Taken from mobygames:

This version of Emerald Dragon differs in several significant aspects from the earlier releases. The most notable changes include:

  • World map: unlike the other versions, this release has a traditional "world map" with separate locations displayed as icons, rather than a continuous environment.
  • Side quests: the three major side quests in the game have been removed and replaced by a new location, a Ghost Town, which contains a different sub-quest.
  • Dungeon layout: the dungeons are noticeably shorter and less complex than in the other versions.
  • Additional items: the dungeons also contain many more treasure chests.
  • Inventory: the inventory in this version is "bottomless", i.e. the party can carry an unlimited amount of items, as opposed to the earlier releases.
  • New attacks: the protagonist Atrushan has a set of new powerful dragon attacks.
  • Character growth: the characters gain much more HP when leveling up than in all the other versions.
  • Cutscenes: all full-screen cutscenes have been either removed or replaced by those made with in-game engine.
also:
The PC Engine (TurboGrafx) CD version of Emerald Dragon contains additional dialogue, scenes, and voice acting.
