Just a place for general PC Engine discussion. Whether it be favourite games, hardware add-ons, random trivia, reviews... whatever suits your fancy. I've been posting random games over on the profile post and felt like a general catch-all PCE thread would be a better place for it. It'll also allow me to make some of the entries a bit longer. I've just been picking out random games from this box art book I own and writing a little blurb about each one (with a few lines taken straight from it).

Here's all the previous post to catch you up. future games will be posted here instead, I'll try and do a new one every couple of days:

PC Engine Spotlight #1

Double Dungeons
A first person dungeon crawler with split screen multiplayer. Lacks visual variety and mechanical depth, but it's simple nature makes it good for quick pick up and play sessions. "W" is often used in Japanese as a short form for "double".

PC Engine Spotlight #2

Valis III
A bishoujo action platformer with a cutscene heavy story. This third entry introduces two more playable characters, allowing you to switch on the fly à la CV3. The PC Engine version stands out with its arranged soundtrack and full voice acting.

PC Engine Spotlight #3

Momotarou Densetsu Gaiden: Dai 1 Syuu
A traditional turn-based RPG set in Hudson's Momotarou universe. As a spin off to the series, "The Legend of Momotarou Side Story: Chapter 1" focuses on 3 side characters, each with their own mini scenario. The back of the box describes it as a "100% fun RPG!" Despite the name, a second chapter was never released.

PC Engine Spotlight #4

Slime World
Known in NA as Todd's adventure in Slime World, this unusual action game began life in the Atari Lynx. This PCE version gives everything an anime-style makeover, including redrawing Todd with sunglasses and a cigar, wearing a sleek suit jacket and blue jeans. There were also two completely new characters in this version, a robot named Morten and an attractive blond woman named Fresher, who are featured prominently on the cover even though they just play minor supporting roles.

PC Engine Spotlight #5

Metamor Jupiter
In this arcade-style shooter, your craft is built around a glowing red core, wrapped in liquid metal. With a tap of the Select button, you can reshape the vessel on the fly, shifting into new forms each armed with different weapons. Flashy visual tricks and a strange, offbeat soundtrack give it a unique vibe, though underneath it all it’s a straightforward old-school shmup.
"Defeat the mysterious aliens by piloting the "Neo Bio Fighter", which transforms according to the players will. A compilation of shooting games made possible by the Super CD-ROM²!"

PC Engine Spotlight #6

CD Denjin Rockabilly Tengoku
aka Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly Paradise, a hallmark shmup for the system. As the title implies, the main draw is its soundtrack, which combines elements of American rock and roll with country music. At some point, Development had shifted from Naxat to Dual. Which is why this sequel feels so different from its predecessor. Unfortunately the Vocal tracks where removed from the TurboGrafx16 release and replaced with instrumentals.

I'd like to keep the spotlight series going but the whole thread doesn't need to be dedicated to it. If you have any other fun PC Engine related ideas you'd like to post here feel free to. Of course general discussion is welcome too.

Such a fun library, even if it doesn't have a ton of big names. To me, that's what makes it interesting to revisit every so often. Stuff like Legendary Axe, Rondo, and Blazing Lazers can't be denied, but even stuff like Neutopia is solid and fun.
Energy is bad but the music is so so good.
I like Tricky Kick, even though I'm bad at it.

Definitely one of the most underrated console with tons of gems
Too bad it's another Saturn case, with most of its library never was released outside Japan
A lot of JP devs moved over to the Saturn once the PC Engine had run it's course. Feels a bit like a spiritual successor. Of course some of that was shared with the PS1. The CD technology was really appealing for many.

My favourites:

Those covers, man. They make you want to play them so badly. I wish I knew japanese.
Most of these are pretty playable without knowing the language, some even have TurboGrafx versions. Only one that would be a struggle is Momotarou (Text heavy rpg). That series doesn't get enough love in the west, there's not really even any fan translations.

It was the first home console that opened the doors to the 4th generation of home consoles and sold quite well in Japan (7,76M) thanks to its varied catalog of games and had better graphics and sound than the Famicom/NES at the time it was launched you know in 1987.

it's like an inbetween console between 8 bit and 16 bit. I know it's technically 8 bit, but there's parts of it that feel like Sega Genesis/Mega Drive like the CD stuff.

How many "bits" a console was in the 80's and 90's was more of a marketing thing, but since the system is comparable to the MD and SFC I would classify it as a 16-bit console.

The confusion comes from the CPU being 8 bit but the GPU 16. That doesn't mean it was automatically less powerful than the other two though. The PC Engine has a larger colour pallet than the Mega Drive for example.

NEC's tiny system has quickly became one of my all-time favorite home consoles over the past decade. The only other time I knew about the hardware was reading upcoming previews and reviews of TurboGrafx-16 titles in VG magazines back in the day (Bonk and Ys Book I & II comes to mind). And seeing giant full-page advertisements using Air Zonk for the sale of TurboDuo. That was it, essentially wrote it off as a failure during the console wars, boy was I wrong!

PCエンジン CD-ROM² システム
超クール!

It wasn't until mid 2010's I became intrigued in the massive import library that stayed overseas. Joined the most active community at the time pcenginefx Obey PC ENGINE <reference for anyone active on the now defunct forums RIP> and bought a refurbished 1987 PC Engine console, CD-ROM² that includes Super system card (Version 3.0) IFU-30 briefcase interface unit complete with a new gear for the CD tray, and multitap from a long-time user.

私のゲームコレクション

Some of the first games I've bought online (through various Japanese websites) at the time when the prices were reasonably low, especially compared to today:

超絶倫人ベラボーマン, Mr.HELIの大冒険, 妖怪道中記

風の伝説ザナドゥ, FRAY CD ~Xak外伝~
エルディス, 爆笑 吉本新喜劇

From top left:

-Mr. Heli no Daibouken
-Advance Variable Geo
-Chozetsu Rinjin Bravo Man
-Youkai Douchuuki
-Kaze No Densetsu Xanadu
-Fray In Magical Adventure
-L-Dis
-Bakusho Yoshimoto no Shinkigeki

Not in gallery:

Some of my favorites in no particular order are Mizubaku Adventure, Down Load, Soldier Blade, SonSon II, Image Fight, Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire, Cotton, The Legend of Xanadu II, and Star Parodier, and Winds of Thunder.

That's sick! I Just got my PC Engine in the past year or so But I've dabbled with a few games via emulation before. I very much prefer playing games on original hardware so I was exited to finally fully dive into the library. Right now I only have an Everdrive to play games from but I hope to build up a bit of a collection in the future. This thread from a few months back gave a giant list that I've slowly been working through.

PC Engine Spotlight #7

Gradius
When Konami started publishing for the PC Engine, they brought over several of their older hits. This ground-breaking classic already showcased many of the series’ signature traits: a customizable power-up system, massive battleships with glowing core weak points, and the ever present appearance of Easter Island heads. While the Famicom had a solid port, the PC Engine version stayed closer to the arcade original with sharper visuals and improved sound. Despite this it suffers from a bit of slowdown, especially once you get 4 options on the screen. This version also adds in an extra graveyard level based on the one in the MSX port.

That's the route I went in, only after a few years of owning my PC Engine since game prices substantially risen. Ended up buying (2) Everdrive one for GEN/MD, and PCE (also own a flash cart for NDS). Playing on actual hardware is the best especially paired with a suitable old television. The problem I had, at the time, was playing ripped CD games since I didn't want to wear down my lens of my system- while I did end up playing a handful of bootlegs, I preferred to play the CD games on emulation instead.

Collection building took a back seat for me, since I decided to put my focus on finishing games I enjoy (in the past and what I recently discovered) that and waiting for the prices to ease up- which I don't see happening any time soon unfortunately.

Translation patches are also worth going through like you mentioned, many Hu-Card games don't necessarily need them but for CD games Tengai Makyou: Ziria is truly helpful. I've completed Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Yuna and have been playing through Madou Monogatari I: Honoo no Sotsuenji until I decided to take a break.
