Gaming = waste of time/life?

Gaming is only a waste of time if you're not playing kino, like MGS4 or Bloodborne. Otherwise it's something that very much makes time for you, and improves your quality of life! (But do read a fucking book every now and then, it wont hurt, I promise)

You misspelled "Online gaming" and "Social Media".

Nothing but stress, anxiety and low self esteem developed from these.

Like others mentioned, the same could be said about wasting time, when experiencing other media (comics, movies/tv shows, books).

I'll sound like a boomer but the short attention span content (colloquially called "brainrot content") is worrying me a bit.

No need to make kids read Kafka or Tolstoi, even simpler books can still be more effective than spending 24/7 on Internet content.

And I'll say it but watching TV was the brain rot of yesterday, we just weren't aware until we got older.

I'd rather be able to choose what kind of series I want to watch instead of having to watch propaganda adverts each time I want to see an episode.

objectively speaking, engaging in any hobby is a 'waste of time'.
all time is wasted to an extent. it's all semantics on how one defines waste of time.

starting a new hobby or engaging in a new interest is 'a waste of time' because you are an amateur outsider with no insider knowledge. perhaps one keeps wasting their time in this space because they are driven and interested in it.
one 'wastes' some time in all facets in order to be able to waste time a little less next time.

like most philosophical issues its all down to someone else bullshitting the terms further ahead than you had previously considered.

personally i think engaging with art in any form is the best way to waste time.

When people who do nothing but watch tiktok and random vloggers ALL day exist, nope videogames are far more valuable than that honestly. I love playing videogames and wish i had more time to play, sometimes i skip the gym because i am having too much fun playing that day....

Perhaps I misspelled my question which was misunderstood. I agree that video games are an art form, however completing a video game does not complete anything in real life. My initial reasoning centered on the question of when the video game becomes a problem to the point where we spend too much time on it, causing us to miss out on some of the opportunities in life, especially when we are young. As I said in my initial post, some games, particularly role-playing games with their dynamics of farming and side quests, induce one to devote a lot of time to them, to the point of generating completion obsessions. At least, that was the case for me. Now, at my age, it would no longer make sense to start such a game.

i rly want to live this life but have no idea how to sustain it … how do u get the money to survive?

im so sick of going out to work
I'm living on a subsistence basis, someone else pays for me.

Completing video game DOES complete something in real life, the caveat is, it only does something to yourself, it doesn't directly contribute anything to society.
Then again, you need to take care of yourself before you can take care of others, right? So by proxy video game is still not a waste of time.

Yes it is.

But then life itself is a waste of time when you think about it, no matter what we're all going to die in the end and beyond it's going as if none of what we've ever experienced ever existed. Poof, it's gone, it's all gone...

I can think of some things you could waste your day doing that are actually bad like hard drugs and vidya isn't one of them. My take? Play all you want so long as you remember your other obligations such as work or family and touch grass when you need to.

Agreed.

But "touching grass" does not necessarily means "going in bars/nightclubs and getting wasted" but even going in a park to read or listen to music is enough.
Absolutely. My brother Is the kinda guy that mocks me for supossedly living in a fantasy world because I play videogames, while he thinks he's the greatest thing ever because he always attends every party and opportunity to get wasted or high. Once I had to supress a laugh when I was being scolded for not being like him and having more friends, when he literally doesn't have any. All his "friends" were literally just drunktards or addicts that brought nothing good to him. Sorry about my yappp I got out of character thereee

I think that with any activity unless you're making memories or improving your situation, you're wasting your time. I've definitely played a fair few games I look back on fondly. I've played more that I can barely remember at all

Don't be sorry.

I'll still be the first to tell that people that think a party is fun only if you drink/get high to the point of getting wasted is a kinda sad mindset.

And yeah, a real friend isn't just a party buddy.

I love wasting my time! I also love getting drunk and high at parties! But I nearly [REDACTED] twice so anything that makes me smile is welcome in my life.

Are you enjoying yourself?

If you're not hurting anybody, then it doesn't matter.

I don't want to be depressing, but cosmically it really doesn't matter. Spend your time how you want to. It's your time. It's too valuable and precious to be spending whatever portion of it you have free on things that don't interest you.

Don't worry, it's not being depressing! The realization of how meaningless everything is made me feel down for a lot of time, before I learned that's actually a very good thing. Do anything you enjoy doing if it doesn't hurt anybody, and you're enjoying life!

I'm late for this thread so apologies about that.

No, I do not think that doing what you love is a waste of time because as long as it's something that someone enjoy doing then that time is well spent in my opinion. I haven't been having as much time to play games like I used to but they have been very important to me and that will never change no matter what.

I travelled a lot from 2019 to 2023 my health is a bit iffy at the moment and im waiting for a legal case to be ruled in my favour for disability money gaming gets me through the long and unaffordable summer days right now.
