Gaming IPs that are wasted in your Opinion

Too bad Bethesda was really a good western CRPG developer, but then they realized Americans want pew pew action so they even ruined The Elder Scrolls series with Skyrim that is a bad copy-paste of Oblivion with more action gameplay + gamemap change lol. They just figured instead of a "really RPG" Americans like action game with RPG elements which is why video game industry left real RPGs behind and started to develop fake RPGs too.
Skyrim is more a Action game than a RPG in in my opinion compared to Morrowind and sadly that is a misconception of the market assuming that Americans or Europeans are all one hive mind who prefer one style of gaming there are and where many Americans who loved RPG games and Anime styled games yet thanks to the market and bias they where often robbed of the opportunity to play those

Which is why I don't buy fake RPGs, the action games that have RPG elements just for a delusion. That's why I will never buy Skyrim, Starfield, Fallout 4, CyberJunk 2077, et cetera.

Morrowind was peak it just needed some better game mechanics as the combat was atrocious besides that it was really good Oblivion in itself was also good but you could feel the downgrade.
Skyrim had me hyped and disappointed afterwards its okay as a Action Game but in regards of roleplaying it felt underwhelming.

Pokémon.

It's the world's largest, most profitable entertainment franchise and yet the games are some of the most unambitious, creatively stagnant technical messes imaginable.
Because it is aimed for kids. If you're a developer and you want to make money, creating crap stuff with some psychology that attracts kids is the best approach, they have zero criteria for a product objectively good. That's why Pokemon will never end, regardless of how crappy can it be.

In this topic I would add only big franchises, not IP's with just one or two games, because they have much less impact overall. My top 3 would be:
  • Rockman
  • Biohazard
  • Zelda

imho some truly wasted ip nowadays are brothers in arms, rainbow six, ghost recon and all those older sega ip like burning rangers, golden axe, rent-a-hero etc.

I came here to post this.
Parasite Eve will never get a re-release due to licensing over the original novel. Which is ironic since Hideaki Sena loves the first game. The Third Birthday sucks because (Other than the quantum leap plot) it had to skirt around this licensing. Square Enix is cheap.

As for Dino Crisis. Capcom just hates us. They've cancelled at least two proposed remakes.

Anyway. Hot take:
Shenmue
Not having Shenmue 3 be the finale is peak developer delusion. Yu Suzuki fumbled a miracle and the odds of us ever getting Shenmue 4 is infinitesimally small.
Shenmue is amazing, but by God its hard to recommend it retroactively because it just perpetually exists unfinished.
And it will forever be unfinished because Yu Suzuki won't let go of his original five or six game plan. Man wanted it to have 16 "chapters" before Sega forced him to scale it back to "11".
His original plan for Shenmue 2 was for it to be exclusively the journey from Japan to China. Being on the ship would have been the whole game. ::hellmo
He had never had plans to make it episodic by the way. The maniac wanted AAA development for each instalment. Shenmue 3 suffered from this.
Yu Suzuki is a creative who clearly NEEDS restraints to complete a project.

But at least we got the Shenmue the Animation, that rocks.
I think Shenmue is one of those games where I don't love the franchise itself, but I really appreciate how influential it is/was.
My Opinions is that Little Big Planet and Fallout are wasted IPs Little Big Planet because they killed of this IP and Fallout because of many bad Decisions made
My heart breaks for Sackboy. That solo platformer from 2021 was so much fun! I love Astro Bot, but we should be able to have both it & Sackboy.

For me:
Gravity Rush/Daze - Such a fun and unique spin on moving around in an open world. It might get ported to other systems, but I don't know that there'll be a 3rd game anytime soon.

Yu-Gi-Oh! - All the good YGO games came out in the mid-2000s. They've done a recent collection of older games, but I'd like something new that is more single-player story focused and not something heavily reliant on microtransactions.

My Little Pony - Not strictly a gaming franchise, but Hasbro has done a pretty bad job of keeping the brand relevant since gen 4 ended in 2019. I've played some pretty decent-to-good licensed games in that time and thought "why couldn't we have had that for gen 4 MLP?". Gen 5 is broadly fine, but why did that get a handful of console video games and not the much more popular gen 4? Hasbro should look to Sanrio and Hello Kitty for a lesson on how to run a brand.

I miss when Final Fantasy was Final Fantasy and not an overproduced cinematic mess.

Megaman X - Not only they did it dirty with Legends 3, but X9 is the long waited sequel that never came

The Legend of Dragoon - That game was awesome and fans waited for a remake. Or at least an HD release, but nope

Dino Crisis - Already named

Parasite Eve - Also named

Final Fantasy - For me, FFXII was the last FF game. It no longer has the charm that made it popular

Breath of Fire - This one is tragic, after a shitty game the whole thing ended in the darkness

Golden Sun - It was hard puzzles, it was long, it has a lot of secrets, and the DS pointed a sequel that never was

Legend of Legaia - The gameplay was fun with using directional commands to make your characters use their arms or legs in combos or release arts. The first game was awesome and the second did it well with the jump of graphics (nothing over the top, but still was a good game).

Monster Rancher - This one got the little hope after the HD release of the classic MR 1 and 2, but no new game after all. I know that the whole "swap disk to get your monsters" no longer is a thing with digital downloads, but they can do like MR 4 and EVO (the nail to the series, but still fun in a way)

Give me a hard as hell game MR game like 2 to raise my Mocchi and kick ass!

Bloody Roar - Do i need to explain this one?

Yu-Gi-Oh! - When was the last good YGO game not online/gacha related?. The series died for me with Over the Nexus and Tag Force 6 (Special was a way to milk the last money of the PSP generation with nothing "special" about it)

There is also games like Grandia, Bushido Blade, Wild Arms, Toshinden, Darkstalkers, etc. That needed more love

My Little Pony -
For real, there's an entire Pony MMO produced & ran by fans called Legends of Equestria and its been running for eight years now. (Hit version 1.0 in 2017) I was a beta tester back in 2013 and it's insane that no official alternative exists outside of farming/town building mobile games.

As for Gen 5, I enjoyed the Netflix film but I never saw the series. It just wasn't promoted like Gen 4 was.

Hasbro has hit the Star Trek problem. Friendship is magic lasted for 9 years, add on the film & Equestria girls it easily reaches past a decade of consistent content.
For a franchise, if a single entry lasts a decade that's no longer an entry, that's the brand.
It's why Star Trek skill milks ToS & TNG. They were around for the lonest period time, reinforced by Apocrypha merch.
Sure they've started to throw love at VOY with a sequel series (Prodigy, sadly cancelled) and the game.

But DS9 & Enterprise might as well be dead to paramount.
Gen 2, 3 & especially 5 of MLP Feels like its in the same boat-
And don't get me started on how Hasbro treats the Transformers vs Takara Tomy. Or Toei's handling of Sentai vs Hasbro's Power Rangers. Hasbro sucks

I liked the G5 Netflix movie quite a bit. The G5 series and console games are fine, although the celebrity cast from the movie get replaced with soundalikes. I'd still have loved to have G4 equivalents of those G5 games, though.

Love me some Star Trek, but I've only seen TNG & Voyager. I have heard the franchise has been suffering through a lull for a while now though.

probably most of then considering nowadays industry. Still, the top ones that come to mind:

-D&D Forgotten Realms as a whole, because yeah BG3 was good, but that was more like a miracle considering the direction WotC is going and the greedy Hasbro. Either way its never going back to the level of influence it had in early 00s.
-The whole Might and Magic IP, both in the strategy games and RPG side, its completely wasted by ubisoft with extremely mediocre releases. Even when something good happens like Dark Messiah, its quickly abandoned.
-Mainline SMT could easily be so much more, but has become a second rate edgy persona.
-Dragon Age could have continued bioware traditional RPGs, but ended up as a confused series that changes its gameplay and aesthetics every game.
-The Sims could have been such a fun series, instead EA just made the most bland and barebones game possible in order to release a thousand ""expansion packs"". Also portable, mission based the sims games should never have been abandoned. I'd buy another one of these in an instant.
-Bomberman is a really simple and fun game that doesn't need much to work and yet they still managed to make the worst possible sequels with the R series.

Morrowind was peak it just needed some better game mechanics as the combat was atrocious besides that it was really good Oblivion in itself was also good but you could feel the downgrade.

I like Morrowind for its interesting locations that can be part of "virtual locations you should visit before you die" thing lol, and some weird interesting shits going on. But when it comes to Oblivion I would say "that's the kind of RPG I like" because of its adventure style. I mean there are lots of interesting side quests in Oblivions that are very legendary situations going on that each of these situations can be main mission or "what the whole game is about" thing. In fact of the side quest regarding a guy trapped in the reality of a painting is what CDPR used as a Witcher 3 DLC, and imagine there are really lots of very interesting side quests in Oblivion. I also like Oblivion's main quest better than Morrowind. There are tons of other things I like in Oblivion too. I do like Morrowind but I like Oblivion more.

Only bad aspect of Morrowind for me is the classic tabletop RPG gameplay logic of combat, which despite your weapon physically passes inside of what you attack just because "you weren't lucky enough" you miss it so despite that you cannot inflict damage until you made a "lucky hit" which Oblivion didn't have such a gameplay at all so another reason to like Oblivion more lol.

I keep on seeing the Gen 5 game for the switch and I do want to try it. It looks fun

Every part of Nu-Trek is either a prequel or a sequel of old Trek.
So at best you require prior knowledge, at worst it retroactively ruins the old series.
The next two series announced will be prequels too. Yay! 🫠

If you enjoyed TNG particularly O'Brien, Worf and the Klingons DS9 is really good as it brings back a lot of characters but places them in a persistent setting. So you get to see them grow, no end of episode re-sets past the third season.
It crosses over with Voyager too. Zimmerman (The EMH's creator) pops up along with a few of TNG's villains. Very cozy, then incredible harrowing once it focuses on politics.

Sisko is best captain.
I'm still angry that Hollywood blacklisted Brooks.
And no, we don't know why he was blacklisted, he won't disclose why.
Star Trek GIF

My man needs more respect.

Is Disco Elysium a valid pick? Or really it should be the world of Elysium.
Appears we're stuck in Martinaise forever, God I have no idea how the creator must be feeling after losing the rights to their work. A world with over 6000 years of history waiting to be bought into new stories and it's residing with a bunch of talentless money makers.

There are two of them now, I believe. The first one "Maretime Bay Adventure" is pretty short. Only like 90 minutes to get 100%. The 2nd one "Zephyr Heights Mystery" is much longer (closer to 8 or so hours), and much better overall. It can even be played in co-op! I'd recommend checking either out, just maybe after a big sale ::sailor-embarrassed

Yeah, I really need to catch up on other Trek stuff. It was always some of my favourite sci-fi

Switch game prices are horrendous, my partner got a copy of Breath of the Wild last month for her birthday. Still the same price as it was at launch. In 2017. Even second hand its only $5 less.

But one day I might grab Zephyr Heights Mystery ::handshake Co-op is always welcomed

Breath of Fire - This one is tragic, after a shitty game the whole thing ended in the darkness
IMO 4th game already used the series' whole potential at its peak point and then the 5th game was just a "WTF" thing that they had no idea what to do with the series but they found an excuse for it that they really didn't have to do anything. Because they didn't have any idea what they should do but they believed the series' name would sell alone they released the mobile scam game 6th game which was nail into the coffin for good. However in it end until 4th game it was a good series that used its whole potential, and 4th game is really a "no way" amazing game that I wouldn't expect at all. But it also means it would be hard to develop a game that is way better than 4th game at this point due to the requirement of more complex development and too much budget to match that much content in this time and age.

In this context I think CAPCOM was very smart to release a game like the 4th game in that specific era of video gaming when they could relatively develop such a game within the boundary of a realistic development time and budget and especially without the popularity of Breath of Fire franchise extinguish lol. So they did all out and really did all they can to develop an amazing game that is really beyond of its time. The game could have been better but nothing is perfect, the game is still amazing. But then we may even appreciate the way 5th game tried something different but I will never forgive the 6th game lol. Still it doesn't mean the IP died for good but the actual issue is new generation CAPCOM who is gready, lazy and lacks vision a lot. Despite they ruined Resident Evil 3 with its remake BS I still wanna hope one day we may have decent Breath of Fire remakes.

I think the term "wasted IP" should be solely reserved for stuff that has laid dormant, because every day a thing is out of sight, it just becomes more out of mind. A gigantic chunk of Sega's back catalog is what I'd point to first. The little handful of revamps they're doing now is a nice step in the right direction, but it's the same handful of IP because people will go, "oh, I remember Shinobi." No one on the planet would go, "oh, I remember AB Cop" in the same way, but they could have if we didn't have two decades of only getting the same collection of Genesis games over and over.

I think the suggestion of Fallout as wasted is kind of laughable? It's a giant property that generates tons of money now. Even if the artistic direction is changed, which makes sense since the original style couldn't keep a company afloat, much less employ as many people as it does now, it's a product that has a crossover and reach that Interplay and Black Isle couldn't have ever anticipated. It's fine to prefer those old games, but it's not wasted.
