Have you experiencing a "culture shock" in gaming?like games that were popular only in your country, different gaming enviroments, etc?

So mine was this:

In Indonesia this game was one of the most popular PS2,literally almost everyone that has PS2 on their home know about this game.

But in mid 2010s,i found out that this game was kinda..overlooked?so few people know let alone love it.

And oh yeah, there wasn't any "PS2 rental"(like internet cafe but with PS) anywhere in the world(except from latin america).

So what's yours?

this thread sounds interesting, downloading downhill domination (very legally) rn i need to see whats up

not sure if this counts but finding out that some people think the sims games are for girls is still crazy to me.
like yeah the player base is predominately women but nothing about it screams "for girls," (to me at least) but theres a lot of gamers who looked at it as another girl game and ended up missing out on a great series (not you TS4 ::mad)

Yo what's up neighbors! This game is the bomb!

Anyway, most of the games in Malaysia here was already popular outside so it won't really count. But my uncle's were fans of Pokemon and Digimon, the first one they've played was Digimon World and Pokemon on the Gameboy. And of course, they were HUGE back then and still is

You can't say you experience Gaming Culture Shock until you mention this game below.

Simultaneously one of the most famous yet the most underrated game worldwide at its time. Everybody knows it yet nobody talks much about it except select few.

I'm not sure I'm reading the question properly, but I'm thinking my biggest example is going from consoles to computers in the mid-80s. Still games, but such a different experience and a whole aspect of the industry that was new to me.

My family is composed of Quake fans and i grew up believing Quake was always popular because of my mother and uncle playing a lot. When i started to try to play online more and improve my gameplay later on i was astounded to see that this is considered a dead(or almost) series and that the most popular game in the series has only 500 daily players or so.
(yes, i'm yet again shilling Quake and ArenaFPS, but i'm being honest)

well turns out that battle realms practically doesnt exist to people outside the philippines. back when i lived there felt like everyone i knew played it growing up it was in every net cafe ect it felt like such a mainstream game. its like that one kid in high school everyone swore was going to go pro

If I recall correctly, BR ended up sending WC3 back to the drawing board in a few respects and led them to refine things more, so there's some important, if subdued influence that got even onto the upper echelons of RTS royalty back then.

as a kid we were loving a lot this game.

Every friend, everyone at school loved dbz, and loved this game.

way later i found out that every one else found this game horrible and crappy.
Butoden games are very hit or miss, really. Some really good ones, a lot of really bad ones.

INDONESIA KNOW WHERE IT'S AT

ITS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES ON PS2 BRO!!

Just the character select screen feels like it had so mich love put into it! They couldve just had a normal static screen but not it's its own map where the camera swooshes around 3d models of everyone on top of a big cliff and they all have two unique animations!!

Was shocked that Gothic considered as eurojank and not as most popular game in the world ever.

dude, for the longest time i thought doritos crash course for xbox 360 was a good game because me and my friend Herbie would play it every time i went to his house. turns out, barely anyone played it, (at least of the people i know) and the people who did say its kinda whatever.

The fact I still devote my life to video games to this day is a shock itself, nobody besides my close friends play home consoles/PC past the PS1 era.

When I was a kid I had an N64, and so did seemingly every other kid. Then during the next generation I had a Gamecube and all of my friends had a Gamecube too. You could play N64 in the play area at McDonald's, and later you could play Gamecube there too. Everyone liked Mario, Pokemon, Smash Bros (especially Melee) etc. It wasn't until I was an adult that I learned both consoles were commercial failures and that barely anyone had them. And in retrospect I still find that to be pretty bizarre.

I can sort of verify I’ve had nearly the exact same experience. Was pretty alienating at first but it really opened my eyes to this entirely different side of gaming I never thought I’d learn about. Really Helped expand my horizons.

I'm to this day baffled by how much yanks love the gamecube now.
It was never popular anywhere I don't think, almost all of its games are on ps2 unless they're made by nintendo, sure it's got a handful of better versions like Hulk Ultimate Destruction runs better but still

It was quite shocking learning that most of the world ignored the majesty of PC Fútbol when I first went online.

Reminds me of how anglos just don't get Dragon Ball Sparking Meteor\Budokai Tenkaichi 3, it's still has a competitive scene in europe with online matches using dolphin + many many mods
