GameStop in 2000s vs. 2020s

Despite the low price for when you resell your used games (which I brought there only when I felt they would have been really cheap also on ebay) I have nice memories...
When Gamestop was in its golden age I unfortunately didn't own any console, but I've been lucky enough later, when I built my psp and vita collection also thanks to their used games, often in very good conditions and complete with manuals!
Looking at the picture I miss the time when you could find only videogames and magazines/guides: now it's almost all merchandise, but I don't care about it. Nowadays I go there when I want to buy a card for the switch eshop or to see the used titles for Switch, sometimes I found hidden gems!

Weird stuff going on with the Gamestop in Canada. For a long time Gamestop was known as Electronics Boutique/EB Games here. Then in 2021 they changed them all to Gamestop, replacing all the signs on the buildings. But now just this year Gamestop sold off it's Canadian branch to some guy in Quebec, who plans to change the branding back to EB Games.

It was over once Funcoland was bought, if we're being honest. But I remember when the other stuff they eventually merged was all separate entities (Babbage's, Software Etc, EB Games, etc) and man. I'm not a big nostalgia guy at all because I understand the world changes, but I do miss the amount of choice you had around the mid-90s. Between game stores and toys stores, I used to go on days off and do a loop of about 50 miles where I could hit at least 20 stores hunting for stuff. Those days are long gone, sadly.

You have it good, all the stores here in Germany are gone. I miss this store so much.

I went the day before they shut down and bought a controller. It's still in the GameStop box. I can't bring myself to open it.

I have so many good childhood memories of them, but yeah in the past few years they really went down hill. Mine even started selling manga and anime merch to get money from weebs instead. You felt how they slowly became more and more desperate.

I still do that when I look for matching clothes for meself due to specific colors I seek and body-size issues (I prefer me clothes fits like a glove) but these days anything else can be bought online just fine lol.

When I enter Steam during huge sale times I still turn into a teen who looking for decent Sega Genesis games in the store's box back then!!! Means may have changed but the emotions still linger!!!! lolol

I bought a fake funkopop Pokemon keychain on alixpress: later they took the item down because it was fake lol
I would not spent 15$/€ on a real funko, though, because I don't like them, but those keychains were quite nice, for the super cheap price it was worth it (I chose Bulbasaur)

Here in Brazil, there never was this store, if there was, and people say that the prices are high.

How dare you! dismissing the street market stall, selling pirated ps2 games, 3 games for R$10!! They are a staple were a staple of our country!

Man I'm so glad my local gamestore is still the same it was 10 years ago. The guy who owns it is really chill but he does look and kinda act like the stereotypical neck board lol. He has a really nice DVD collection and we often talk about the new anime coming out. Most people who come in are kids looking for Pokemon cards, parents looking for a "nintendo", or people trying to sell a 360 that a cat pissed on(true story).

There was 3 gamestops in my city, two shops closed down and now the last one i like a generic gaming store in the mall, they changed name and ownership and now it's called gamelife. there was one near where i catch the bus, it sold out to a coffee shop that closed almost immediately

There's a Game Xchange not too far from my house which is where I have managed to snag quite a few NES and SNES games recently for a decent price.

I remember my local Gamestop being pretty decent in the 2010's. The employees knew a lot about video games and it was a good way for a poor person to scoop up used XBox 360 games when 8th gen consoles were current. They gradually shifted to merchandise in the 2020s and still had to shut down. I didn't use Gamestop much after switching to PC, but the lack of brick and mortar game shops around here is disappointing. Would love to see a retro game shop around here, but I doubt there's enough money in this town for that.

Yes you could already see that the store was crashing more and more and unfortunately it was getting worse and worse.

This is why I go to Retro Game Stores instead of GameStop nowadays. GameStop lost its magic it once had.

that's too true, and you probably find more "surprising" games there too, last time i found a collection of some adventure games for pc that seemed really cool, all of them got into my backlog of games to play, and the price was good too, i really had to buy it ahahah
