I really feel these store closures are unnecessary, considering almost anybody picks up and buy games today. I don't like Gamestop, but I don't like the way they're doing this.

All I gotta say is thank God there are other game stores that I can go to, but most of them are secondhand. All I can pray is hope none of the local ones left in my area are part of the store closures. They can close the Downtown Royal Oak store though. Nobody likes it. Not even the high tier managers.

It was just a matter of time. Online game platforms killed the brick and mortar video game stores. Only way traditional game stores will survive is by catering to retro game traders.

Gamestop's online store has saved my ass when trying to get sought after stuff for sane prices. Managed to get a used copy of Persona Q2 for under 80 dollars and a MSRP Switch off there. The Switch also didn't mysteriously disappear like the one I had to get a refund for did.

I hope their online store sticks around.

Good
Fuck GameShit

Their stores are part of what's been ruining gaming for 20 years

I just checked, and quite a few are closing in Michigan. None near me are closing thankfully. Probably because both are prestige stores.

Honestly it was a long time coming. We knew it was in a bad position when they had to resort to selling NFTs for a while. Limited Run’s been replacing them for a while, whether we like it or not. Hopefully we’ll see second hand stores be like “ding ding the wicked witch is dead” and pop up all over the place, especially since my state is losing a lot of them and they’ve pretty much monopolized it besides Target’s smaller selection and the occasional Walmart

They're not doing too hot either.

My sympathy for all of the employees who are now out of a job.

The store itself, however? Nary a shred of it. Gamestop has always been a net negative in the gaming marketplace.

Unfortunately, they’re the only place companies go to for physicals. Though we take that, love to see Limited Run take Ls.

Not all of the companies. Plus, I've been seeing more than a few smaller games get physical release without LR getting involved.

Have not set foot in a video game store in years, thanks to inflated retro market and poop tier production quality for current games
Seems like this limited run stuff is monopolizing the physical releases segment, which probably won't be good in the long run

I remember all the stores in my town (in France). There were at least three or four across the town center. The last one gradually abandoned all video game content in favor of phones and crap accessories, to the point where the woman selling these didn’t even know what a DS was…

There are still a couple of stores selling used video games, but it’s not their main product, unlike the specialized ones before. But at least the vendors are invested (they are also movies/comics buff)

I feel mixed on this too, it's sad that some no longer have jobs but Gamestop has always been to some degree not always doing that well. I think I remember when they started selling stuff like anime merch and other unrelated stuff (like stationery) when I went in 2016, and when I went in 2019 I was surprised it still existed. They were aware that they were declining for years (with bad treatment towards their employees I think) yet they continued to keep their stores up in the late 2010s out of all years (literally no people were going in the late 2010s, pretty much zero now). If they could've improved and not been shitty that would've been a better outcome, but Gamestop has always done the opposite of that imo ::cirnoshrug

Not surprising. One of my local stores which is also one of the biggest GameStops is only open from noon to 8PM most days and even then, it's barely games. Just collectible slop now.

I feel pretty sad about this because one of the stores closing is the one at my local mall, which has been there for as long as I can remember...

I have a lot of nostalgia tied to GameStop, going there to get a new game every 9 weeks as a reward for good grades in school when I was young. However, I can admit that some of their practices were predatory and the evolution of online stores has rendered them near obsolete for modern gaming. I do think it'll suck for the retro-gaming community though. I won't mourn them, but I will miss them.

GameStop is the downgrade of Electronics Boutique. which is the deevolution of Babbages. That's why I have 0 nostalgia for it.

I know you live in a different region, but before GameStop or EB Games, it was always called Funco Land before 2001-02.

I had a Babbages in my local mall in the early 90's that was replaced with an Eletronics Boutique and then became Game Stop. I think GameStop acquired a bunch of different game store companies all over the US and its territories and rebranded them.
