Games you've spent tons of hours in but never beaten?

Hard to beat Monster Hunter Freedom Unite when that goddamn rathalos won't drop that stupid ruby.

WHERE IS MY RUBY YOU ASSHOLE I'VE KILLED YOU 30 TIMES ALREADY I'M GOING TO FUCK UP YOUR WIFE AAAAAAHHHHH

SYNTHETIK: Legion Rising

Can never make it pass the final boss. Sometimes you'll get gear that'll already screw you over without you knowing it till it happens.

I'm curious about why you think "it's a must do."

What if the game is either just bad or boring to you? What if you have other more interesting games so you forget about it or even just that you have lost your save and don't wanna redo everything?

I salute completionists but I feel that most games have a tedious 100% goal.

If you end up forcing yourself to finish a game then wouldn't it make it more like a chore than an entertainment?
No I don't do the 100% thing just finish the game and make the credits roll.

Well its something I downloaded and invested my time into I can't just throw it away I won't feel right im obliged to finish what I started.

Why? If I don't like it I don't finish it
For example Pokemon Violet was abysmally boring and bad so I dropped it, it just wasn't for me
Sometimes I just decide to play something else and don't finish it
For example, I still haven't finished Yakuza 0 because I wanted to play Vanquish, so I ended up finishing Vanquish instead. I STILL haven't finished Yakuza 0 because I wanted to play the PSP one, it really doesn't matter honestly, story games are meant to be enjoyed and had fun with or to form an emotion with it's story and characters in my opinion
I work in a more systematic way if I start something I have to finish that thing before moving on I dont like to start a million new games and not progress properly through them but its really a matter of me picking a game and knowing well kinda knowing what im getting myself into all games I played so far I finished them and while some are meh others are ok I didn't encounter a trash game yet.

I'll be honest: this isn't a compelling game design to have a list of checkmarks to fulfil.

I don't want to waste time of my life for a virtual medal either. The time I spend on that chore is less time for games I may have enjoyed.
Well, you asked why to do this and explained why. Being compelling or not is very subjective in this matter, and at this point it's a matter of just you giving your opinion vs many other people with the opposite opinion who find this very fun and rewarding. Everyone plays in different ways, and have fun in different ways, achieve pleasure in different ways. Have you heard of cock and ball torture and bdsm? it's way more popular than you might think lol

FFX and FFX-2. To be fair, the first one was my first *real* RPG besides Pokemon and a few other gameboy titles. I just wasn't used to this type of game back then, I got all the way to Yuna getting kidnapped after the Shoopuf ride and then stuck because I completely missed out on the Sphere Grid. Then I just got bored after the first Seymor fight... wasn't used to games getting that long, I guess. I got really far in FFX-2, to the part where you have to fight the Aeons, but got stuck again and never went back.

I have good memories though, and I have been feeling the urge to buy the remasters and finally beating them, especially with how low they get on sale. However, Square's recent actions of thinking it's justified to remove access to games you bought have led me to boycotting all their games for now. Alas, maybe later.

For me is Tactics Ogre Knights of Lodis. The game is pretty good but it's unbalanced as hell, and the level of grinding needed to advance the game(which is a lot) just demotivated me to continue.

Tales of Destiny ps1
Tales of Phantasia snes
Alundra PS1
Okami PS2
TMNT Nes (I've tried to clock it multiple times)

Loved and got quite far in all of these. Not sure why but I didn't get around to finishing them. I will do one day, especially Alundra, Tales of Destiny and Okami.

Persona 4 (PS2 version) is the one I spent the most time on. I liked the story, but the game felt too slow, and I didn’t enjoy the time limits on activities outside of battles. Playing on the original hardware didn’t help either. If I ever replay it on an emulator, I think it’ll flow better.

GTA: San Andreas (PS3 remaster) was another one. I was making great progress when my console broke—almost five years ago. Luckily, I backed up my save, and it’s still sitting on my hard drive, waiting for the day I get another console.

YU-NO (Steam version) caught my attention because of the soundtrack and its reputation as an influential visual novel. I’m not usually into VNs, but I gave it a shot. Played the three-hour prologue, stopped, and never went back. It’s a long game, and since I don’t have much free time, I keep putting it off.

Almost every classic Castlevania I’ve played fits this pattern. I only finished Rondo of Blood. I love the series, but I always hit a wall at some point and can’t move forward.

That said, I tend to come back to games eventually, even after months. I don’t like leaving things unfinished.

All Of The GTA, all Disgaea games, some Fire Emblem, that because when any character dies I get frustated and quit.

So, not about me, but I've an acquaintance who routinely never finishes games on purpose.

I've asked about this; they say it's their fear of (impending) death and finality and impermanence that stops them from playing to completion.
They love games. They buy and play them regularly. They're just stricken with fear and/or dread whenever they approach the ending. "Why does something they like have to end!?" So they usually just start the game again at about 70%/75% completion. Or just move on to something else.

I know that's pretty intense, but, does that resonate with anybody?
I don't quite get it, myself

Probably Amazing Isiand. I spend tons of hours making creatures and unlocking stuff but I always got stuck at the final boss.

you dont have to play trying to save every unit, you can just let some stay dead, some are more valuable than others
Yeah, I agree, but every time someone dies it make feel like I failed, or I didn't planned a good enough strategy. But Indeed, there are some units that just don't worth it.

Daggerfall. I hate to be a baby but vanilla Daggerfall is just so very difficult. I'm currently working on a DFU run with a bunch of quality of life mods. Still had to console command my character because I kept getting arrested for 'criminal conspiracy' at level 1 with no prior crimes.

Tales of Zestiria. Three false starts & start-overs as I kept forgetting how to play the game. Finally got to the final boss...and got my poop pushed in. After ten tries I gave up and looked-up online what I was doing wrong. The issue? Too low of stats...at level 90. I never got the whole alien munchkin fusion thing, and I sold all of my equipment right before the final boss to afford something I don't recall anymore. So no item combining for better equipment thereby skills & stats, and I wasn't interested in playing more hours to get equipment to fusion dance for a game I legit hate.

I will, however...eventually...save mod my stats and give it another shot just so I can tell the game "FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU! FUCK! YOU! FUCK YOU, MOTHER FUCKER! MOTHER FUCKERING FUCKER OF A FUCKER-MOTHER FUCK-FUCKCIAS-FUCKING-FUCKSALOT-FUCKED-FUCKER!!! FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!!!!! YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!"

This is legit the thing I hate the most about modern RPGs.

A gimmick that would screw you for good if you don't use it despite that in retro RPGs people could finish FFVII without any materia or FFX without using the Sphere Grid.

I finish almost everything i play, just not in a completionist way.
My unfinished swans are:

- Mana khemia (Ps2): Because i got stuck in a Boss, but i have many wonderful experiences with this game. I can sing the opening n.n

- Shadow Hearts (Ps2): I got stuck in a Boss too...Spend a lot of time farming. The gothic/dark scenery is gorgeous.

- Eternal Sonata (Ps3): Couldn't beat the last Boss, lol, and i was playing the Ps3 version, the difficult one.

- Etrian Odyssey (NDS): Love the game but i don't remember why i stop playing at one point...

- Suikoden 2: Don't remember why either...

Sadly, this has kinda become my modus operandi as of the last few years. x)

Dark Souls 1 and 2 are the first games that come to mind. You have no idea how close I've come to finishing both of them, especially DS2. The thing is I've always played them co-op and though I've done multiple playthroughs of both like that, something always happens before I reach the finish line. I've literally done everything in DS1, DLC included, multiple times but for some reason we stop or they finish without me or other such things. I should have just pushed through and finished them anyway because I forget where I was and start over, the cycle repeating.

Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4. In both cases I go into a modding trance and before I know it I'm like 300 mods deep. With that much shit, something will inevitably break and I'll start over months later and repeat the cycle. x) I have some kind of problem with my unstoppable need to mod some games and this was before my brain started trying to kill itself! FO4 is kinda stinky anyway, so the prospect of going through the same stuff again kills any urge to finish it.

Darkest Dungeon. Same as above. There's just so many cool classes and new enemies and other stuff! I just can't resist. ;3; DD hasn't broken yet, I just get unsatisfied with some of the classes and want to start over after revising my mod list.

Front Mission 5. Such great gameplay, but the (lack of a) story and characters makes me eventually lose interest. The fact that a ton of cool parts and equipment are locked behind the Survival Simulator also contributes to this.

Digimon World. What a piece of shit that I am also in love with. I think most of my significant amount of hours in the game has been spent training or making a mad rush for a toilet. Fuck you, Digimon World! No, wait, come back...

Finally, Xenogears. My last time I was most of the way through the second disc, but we modded my PS3 and I forgot to backup the save file. Fuck. I've owned a copy of the game for like 25 years and I've started it over many times, but it remains unbeaten. I've spoiled myself on everything, but I still want to experience it myself. I just absolutely love the world and the backstory.

Seconded on F:NV, except I can't even finish it vanilla. I love the storylines, the characters, and the faction drama but the game itself is so...unfinished. It's like it requires mods to even be playable. Even when I find a build I enjoy, I inevitably reach that point where I've had enough of the game, which is a shame because I'm still invested in the story

Hardcore Mode helps stave off the boredom a little but then I can't bring companions with me because they have the survival instincts of a gnat

You are 100% right. That's why I mod it so much, to polish it a bit. x) But there's only so much you can do with mods, it's not like they can rewrite the whole game engine. I think Obsidian did an admirable job for how little time they had to develop the game. They certainly did way better than Bethesda did with FO3, FO4 and FO76. Then again, I don't think Bethesda has really made any great games, just published some great ones.

-All GTA games, tho recently I did beat GTA San Andreas.
-Skyrim
-Fallout 3 and New Vegas
-Etrian Odyssey IV
-Donkey Kong Country Returns: I'm close to the end of the game
-Mario vs Donkey Kong: Mini Land Mayhem
-Ocarina of Time: I'm in ganons castle
-A Link to the Past: A Link to the Past is one of my favorite zelda games even though I haven't beaten it
-Whirl Tour
