Games you were glad you just rented, not bought outright.

Asterix and Obelix: Take on Caesar. The franchise has some terrible games because they're generally just shovelware but that game is an abomination!

A ton of 90s games I've already forgotten. Particularly N64 ones, which were super expensive. As a kid I was completely at the mercy of game magazine ads.

Technically checked out from a local library but its in the same spirit of the thread

Its short and sweet, granted you are supposed to replay levels to get hi scores and on higher difficulties, but i personally was just happy playing thru the campaign once

New Pokemon Snap (why didnt nintendo just name it pokemon snap 2, its gonna be weird if the ever make a third one)

Also fairly short, the main campaign is like 10 hours and there isnt really any postgame aside from getting higher scores from replaying levels as well. so yeah both games were fun but Im glad i dint buy them

Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer. I hated it so much that that same afternoon after 30 minutes of playing I asked my mom to call and see if we could get it switched for something else. I forgot what I swapped it for. It's really cool the Blockbuster manage let us do that.

Pokemon Channel. Obviously.

Destiny, back on release when Red Box was still bangin. It was one of those things where I wouldn't have played it otherwise because loot shooters hover just above the nadir of gaming but still. Actually a lot of Red Box rentals were just "fuck it let's roll" kinda picks.

Incidentally I'm playing the PS1 game Apocalypse rn and it's the perfect kind of weekend rental game. Dumb fun, can blast through it in three days, not really worth replaying.
