Games you were glad you just rented, not bought outright.

that'
I used to rent a ton of shit licenced GBA platformers from my local Jumbo Video. The ones I remember are Tales of Desperaux (which I actually remember being quite good), Finding Nemo (an interesting Ecco the Dolphin-like game), and some BS about Jimmy Neutron fighting aliens in space. The GBA had so much shovelware, but every now and then you’d find a gem.

I also rented a lot of great games, too, like Chibi-Robo, Digimon Rumble Arena 2 and Digimon Battle Spirit, and Pokemon Crystal. Also, a VHS of the Donkey Kong Country cartoon, which I quite enjoyed. My rental store also had free popcorn made in-house and was next to a restaurant, so we’d go there quite often on Saturdays. It lasted way longer than it had any right to, but it was a great store while it was open.
so crazy. I was a psx era kid. didn't know you could hire out GBA games.

(I borrowed from a friend so technically I rented it). For me it was this almost unplayable game View attachment 3748
The game was made with the idea of playing it with four people. So when you play alone the CPU is atrocius (they always go to attack the enemy and never helps you) and the last missions are imposible ?
I remember this, and it has been my experience exactly. I could never get past Cell because the other "Z morons" would vaporize themselves against an energy barrier Cell kept creating. Bamco QA 10/10 since they managed to ship a game without something as basic as giving some orders to AI.

I know it was a port of an arcade game that expected co-op multiplayer, but if you can't adapt your product to a different target platform and still expect to get people's money, well, that kind of zero effort approach is unacceptable.

what is the biggest bullshit about this game is it had no couch co-op. I didn't do my research well enough so I bought it right when it came out, knowing it was made for multiplayer, and expecting to be able to play it with my buddy and he came over and we loaded it up only to find out if we wanted to co-op it he'd have to buy it on the vita and come over or play it at his house on ps3 and us do it online. what a waste!

I know times have changed but really the death of couch co-op in most games with multiplayer is probably my biggest gripe with modern gaming. online multiplayer is cool too and I get some games it's probably hard to implement same screen co-op but shit, it's really a vital component to the experience that is missing. yeah it's more convenient to not go anywhere to play with your friend but you miss out on a lot too.

You know if Data Squad was any good?

isn't that game like 60 hours?
According to HowLongToBeat, the main story of Yakuza: LAD can take up to 45 hours so I suppose if you took a few days off then it could be done. Still takes some commitment and excellent value for money.

Also thought you were talking about the Rugrats game at first. The idea of THAT taking 60 hours to beat is the kind of shit nightmares are made of!

Damn I already left out my answer.

Lollipop Chainsaw (original.) That game is fun but it takes maybe 5 hours to beat.

Defender of the Crown for NES. I rented it again and again because I was too young to understand it and determined to figure it out. Had I bought it I would have been endlessly frustrated and wishing I had gotten a different game.

Top Gun. Ten bajillion tries and I never landed the plane. ?

I wasn't exactly happy I rented it either, but I'm certainly glad I never bought Superman 64!

i think i have only have this happen once.
big mutha truckers.
again, i think i rented it, and i played for about 5 minutes.
never had any intentions of buying it, mostly just saw ads for it in magazines.

I guess we could say you dodged a bullet faster than a speeding train!

Back to the Future 3 for the SEGA Genesis I really loved the trilogy but got really disappointed with this game.
Yeah that was terrible. That isn't a game, it's an aversion therapy software to get people to give up on gaming.

Superman on the NES. After the arcade game, i was "what the hell is this shit?!!" Pit Fighter on the SNES. Dodged a bullet there. When the fighting game craze took off, eventually got to try Fatal Fury on the Genesis. "Humm...Ok.... Not shabby for what it was... Let's see next week what the SNES Fatal Fury version is like. Holy shit. Where do I even begin? Load time... On a cartridge. Back then.... Bad everything too. It was so bad to me that I hated Takara, even into the PS 1 days. Made it a point to get a Neo Geo AES refusing and hating to play any of ports outta spite. While everyone else was all happy with Fatal Fury 2 I had bought the AES version of it.

I never got to rent a game. My father wouldn't let me and my siblings rent games because he thought they could have viruses. Did anyone else experience that? idk, he and my mother must have seen something on the news? To be fair, this was the 90's when everyone was scared of everything...

no, i've never heard of that. did you only have a computer to play on? if yes, then that's a bit understandable. if not, then your parents need to go outside and roll around in the grass a bit or something.

I guess it's to be expected most parents wouldn't understand the differences between a console and a computer back then; they proceeded to associate the two equally.

Greendog on Genesis. I liked the idea of a mellow surfer dude kinda wandering around, but I wound up really disliking how it looked even more than how it played, which wasn't the greatest either.

Leisure Suit Larry 6 on PC, talkie version. The notion of renting a PC game seemed to ridiculous to me in 1995, but I wanted to play this one. It came with a little walkthrough so I was able to finish it before my rental was up, but I think it was like $49 at Computer City so I was happy to have finished it for $4 or whatever.

yea, that's what I think it was. Was really just curious if anyone else experienced that. Don't get me wrong, <3 my parents and growing up a little tech illiterate didn't hurt me at all. I work as a computational scientist :)

No, the opposite. We didn't have a computer in the house until around '99 but we had an nes, sega genesis, and playstation.

your parents are very sheltered and need to make some friends, and they need to do some actual research and chat with people who play games instead of listening to the news.
i'd say drag them here and they can chat with us and get some learning done. my mom isn't tech savvy, but she can tell the difference between a computer and a game system, and she hardly ever stays in doors.

Uh, this happened a long time ago, not much good now >_> Both my parents are fairly good with tech now... Like @RageBurner said, at that time, I think if your family couldn't afford nor had use for a computer until later than most, it is natural to have a misconception like that.

i'll take your word for it.
it's possible, but i guess my parents were a bit more familiar with technology, or just didn't care much about it; so this wasn't a phenomena that i was aware of. i do know that mom doesn't care to learn about technology, just prefers to have me do stuff for her, and then she gets mad when she doesn't know what to do. and it was arguably worse with the handful of instances that she tried to play a video game. playing tetris ds, the level gets a little bit fast, calls for me to clear to clear it, doesn't seem to understand that it will get even faster, then gets mad at me.

Dynamite Headdy.

The fuckers from blockbuster made the games harder, so you'd have to keep hiring them out.

I wasted so much money on that crap, but I don't honestly think I'd have wanted to own it.
I never could beat the giant baby head boss until I played the Japan version years later with its original difficulty and was able to complete it
