Punished Venom Cu-Neo?

It's going to sound silly but that was Wipeout Pure, I've played through the PSP library and all the exclusive stuff you can only really get on places like CDromance but I've always avoided Wipeout because of uh.. well, I'll just say it's complicated! I associated it with stuff that made me feel negative. I ended up getting the Wipeout Special Edition version of Pure on a whim, and I wasn't able to put it down! I played through every track, every difficulty, the bonus content, custom content, everything I could get my hands on pretty much!

I have few of them.
I was never much of a jRPG fan, for example, until I gave Persona 3 on the PSP a chance. That game changed my perception of jRPGs.
The same was with the Yakuza series. I had heard a lot of good things, but couldn't convince myself for a long time until I finally bought Yakuza 0 on big sale. I approached it not expecting much. I soaked it in and became a fan of the series.

I have a similar experience with several games considered average at best, crappy at worse.
These are: Stunt GP, Jurassic Park: The Game (from Telltale), Lost: Via Domus, Conflict: Desert Storm and Conflict: Desert Storm II, Shellshock: Nam '67, Singles: Flirt Up Your Life, Test Drive: Off-Road, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, Supremacy MMA, Rally Championship Xtreme

Ultimate Doom. I always played games that had violence with a plot but it felt nice to just shoot pixelated army dudes and demons in the face, kind of nostalgic actually, It feels like I'm playing an arcade game minus losing all my money to continue playing ?

Other games I didn't expect to love:

Ys Seven!!
I'd known about the Ys saga for a long time, but I never found it to be "my cup of tea". See, I generally like JRPG's where you have a party, EXP levels, equipment to handle, and where battle is turn-based. At some point I discovered the Tales series which made the "turn-based" point go away. Battles were still "encounter based" and I still had a party, but with dynamic, streetfighter-esque combat. Cool.

But I've never been attracted to the Zelda-style of "me, alone, walking around killing monsters on the spot as I go". Then browsing CDR (;)) I looked at more modern Ys games and found out in Ys Seven you HAD a party, even if monsters were roaming around and there were no "encounters" per se. I tried it out and I absolutely loved it. I loved almost everything about it. I was quite hooked from early on. It helps that I found the soundtrack to be amazing ?

Final Fantasy XII. My first contact ever with the series and the one that got me into playing the others despite their big differences. A guy was selling his ps2 games in a grocery store from my hood and talked my mom and me into buying this alongside the other games I picked and was more excited to play. Booooiiii I can't even remember which games those were. It's all Final Fantasy XII and the +700 hs I put on it on my console. I was like 14, my father had just died of lung cancer, we were struggling and this game made a good escape route for my teenage angst and self-harming thoughts.

...Also, Fran's cake ???

Another game I really didn't expect to love: Breath of Fire - Dragon Quarter
Now this one fits the bill pretty good! So, you know the feeling expecting not too much out of a jrpg because you've already played all the essentials, & think nothing else will surprise you? Well, this one surprised me. Actually, this one surprised me on a couple of levels. If anything, the entire journey feels pretty heavy, & you only get to breathe that sigh of relief at the end of the game.

& then out of nowhere:

This is the most Suda 51 feeling game not by Suda 51 of all time. It just nails that exact vibe & gameplay & honestly was pretty damn impressed, so much to the point where I looked into the team afterwards. It's extremely respectable.

Phantasy Star Online I hate MMOs but was convinced to give it a try the first hour or so of gameplay I was complaining "this is gay" "I hate this" but by the time we beat the first boss I was hooked

Shove it! The Warehouse Game (md) (a Sokoban clone)
shove-it-the-warehouse-game_12-png.6489

I had this game in real console, but as a kid, never liked it much... but my dad loved it!
I eventually played it and loved it too! we beat it to the last level together! ? (took a long time!)

Castlevania 64. There were aspects that grabbed my attention from the get go, but then I gave up because of how cryptic the progression looks. Upon giving it a second chance, this time letting go of my gaymer pride and not being afraid of using walkthroughs and save states on my first playthroughs, I discovered it was pretty much the love of my life ?

Upon repeated playthroughs things only got better, as you get used to the levels layout the experience gets more and more fluid.

I remember when I played Sega genesis for the first time in a cartridge that had a lot of games in it. It was fucking magical. You just unlocked a memory of me playing this game! I enjoyed it from the get go.

Three come to mind right now.

Ar tonelico for the PS2. I went into this thinking it was gonna be alright, but after a short time, it sucked me in faster than I think any series ever did. Ar tonelico II and Qoga followed suit.

Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land, also for the PS2. An early game on the system and I expected to have some trouble, but it turned out to be a fantastic experience and is my personal favorite of the PS2's early era.

Most recently, First Kiss Story. It's notable as the last game to be released on the PC-FX (though it does have a PS1 port), and as a visual novel, I wasn't expecting too much. It hit me a lot harder than I thought it would. I doubt there will be a translation of it anytime soon, but it was a fun experience all around.

Believe it or not, my two favorite franchises of all time, GTA and Musou, are exactly this. I grew up with them and begun doubting my childhood, thinking that i would never enjoy them again because I “grew out of them” but recent emulation playthroughs of them made me fall in love again. I’m grateful that emulation made me reunite with them!

Example 2 would be crash, I was not a huge fan of crash during my adult years, thinking yet again that I “grew out of it” but a convo I had with @Skeetos a few months ago made me reconsider , the way they talked about twinsanity sold me on it so I replayed it and it reignited a flame in me I once lost so I’m quite grateful to Skeetos!

Another example… racing games? I thought I’d hate kart racers, but playing sonic all stars racing made me love them. I believe @RageBurner also likes those sonic racers.
Burnout paradise and midnight club made me fall in love with regular arcade racers though. I think @Cu-Neo also likes midnight club?

Smt is something I thought I’d dislike but I warmed to it quick. My convos with @dropsmegamega validated a lot of my fears about it though but I still like it!

Sorry for the mass ping guys ?
No problem, I'm glad I was able to put you on to Crash like that lol. Twinsanity was the first video game I ever played so it's very dear to me. But also those Sonic racing games are fire. My favorites were the Riders games. Team Sonic Racing has a killer soundtrack though.

Hyper dimension neptunia is one game series that surprised me and love as an all-time favorite.
I started one of these recently, Wherever Blanc VS Zombies takes place lol. That game is cool. I think that one is marked Megatagmension though. Idk if it's a Street Fighter EX+ Alpha Omega Super Remix type naming scheme or not though.
