What the heck is this game ? oO
Virtual On meets Devil May Cry ? I never heard of it
In terms of moment to moment gameplay think Virtual On with more verticality; you can jump, fly, and zoom around the large stages - which often feature different elevations, hidden spots and more. Combat itself is pretty simple - mostly just mashing a single button with auto-combos, but it's proximity sensitive, firing projectiles if your target is far away, and moving in if they're close.
But the theming is really what makes the game stand out! You don't simply select which character you want to fight as, but instead build up a whole team of these tiny, toy-sized robots (of which there are over 200) which you collect via gachapon capsules, and bring them into battle! Once one of your dudes BLOWS UP then you send out the next! This adds a level of team building similar to something like Pokemon, and the sheer variety of borgs allows you to build a team that matches your personality as much as your playstyle. We got ninjas; we got tanks; we got a whole series of tokusatsu inspired superheroes! You can even command a huge thunder dragon, or hover over the battlefield as a futuristic warship. Better yet! You can have a
team that includes all of those if you'd like!
The singleplayer campaign is good craic, with saturday morning cartoon vibes throughout over the 3 distinct arcs: first take out the local bullies; then deal with a mysterious girl working for the big bad; and then finally take on the big bad himself! Fights are usually team efforts with you selecting a partner from a roster of the other kids in town, and the roster increases as you invite new kids to join the action.
It's not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination. Like I said - it's a lot of mashing the B button! But it has the foundations of something really interesting and it would've been nice to see them build upon it.
Maybe someday...
